GamesIndustry.biz is reporting on what cduld easily be one of the biggest stories in gaming so far in 2017. It appears that Twitch will begin selling digital versions of games this Spring pitting it in a head-to-head fight for dominance with Steam. While a big revelation, in a sense it comes as no surprise given that Twitch is owned by Amazon.

Millennial's will flock to this in droves. The Twitch Crate itself will drive sales.

It's going to be a raging success and steam will start to fall behind.
This will be primarily for those that are regular users of Twitch. Or those for whatever reason don't like any of the above apps.
Now if they get any exclusives then it's a whole different ballgame. I'm going to go ahead and call it. You will see some kind of e-sport game become Twitch exclusive.

First of all Steam prices are notoriously good so,i don't see much benefit here other than just maybe better support than Steam's horrible support.
What i do fear is that twitch will stoop to illegal means of paying all their top streamers to endorse sponsored games, something that governments have started to clamp down on but is tough to prove.
Twitch has been very aggressive with finding ways to make more money, however i have yet to see anything benefit the viewers since the first day i used Twitch. They have this Twitch prime ordeal but i won't use it,so i don't see them doing much for the industry other than making money off of it.
One thing for certain,at least i think so is Twitch will be an easier platform to move from watching to playing which might very well allow them to take over Steam's foothold on the business. This will of course have to include cloud/storage.

Like you said: competition is always good.

Here is what needs to happen, they need to get rid of "Cable Television", only have Live Events, News, and Weather Broadcast / Sports, all other channels taken off, increase internet bandwidth to 100mbit minimum standard broadband package, and make everything else all movies streamed anyone can customize and stream on demand what they want to watch when lol.
This directly competes with Valve's revenue cut (of minimum 30%) by giving devs 35%, and this with the marketing and advertising that comes from the Twitch platform just of people streaming the game...
I think Valve has found their match, Amazon might be willing to spend big bucks to make this work. O.o
This. There's far too many programs like this which are basically bloatware. Just let us buy the game without the need to add some BS app/desktop app etc etc.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

Im shocked this didnt happen years ago, just seem like a natural extension of what they are doing.
This is a marketing shift. Look at it as a pilot program for their broader marketing goals. If this takes off as well as I imagine it will, you'll see this become more of a thing with other day to day items, etc. Amazon's Dash buttons are a great example of this. We have about 10 dash buttons currently. ranging from bathroom essentials to food staples. One of our 3 children is autistic, loves to go shopping, but we can only be out x amount of time before he loses it. So we have to go shopping in secret or on very strict 'sprint-like' trips when we take him with us.
The amazon dash buttons allow us to order things with a push of the button without having to make extra trips, or make a trip longer. It's an incredible convenience to have, especially when you're already taking a kid to various therapies 4 days out of the week and taking other kids to other extra curricular activities.
Amazon really has their marketing team ahead of the curve and you can expect the way you shop to change drastically over the next 5 years, in large part because of amazon.
(We own a descent amount of AMZN stock because as a consumer we are able to see what they're doing for us as a consumer and a shareholder)
Yeah, I'm not going to lie, I think this would have been a great project for YouTube, but as innovative as Google has been throughout the years, YouTube has been largely reactive. It's just so odd. I wouldn't be surprised to see YouTube enter the ring, but they were late on streaming, too, so I wouldn't expect anything in the short term. That is unless they could create a partnership with Steam.

Companies like Comcast have realized this, which is why they are now better monetizing data. Unlimited internet will soon be a thing of the past and you will continue to pay extremely high rates as time goes on. They will get ya one way or another.
AT&T already limits their data usage to 150gb a month. Comcast just started limiting it to 1tb a month as a beta test. Soon Comcast will lower it and continue lowering it until they catch up with AT&T. Other isp will fall in line.
As I understood it, this service relies on:
1) impulsiveness : one-click purchase while watching a stream
2) rewards : a chance to earn a random item with every purchase
3) donations : a percentage of the sales goes to the streamer
4) ambition : the better streamers market a game, the more money they earn
It may have a positive impact on other Amazon/Twitch services and loops (viewership, sense of community, exclusive content, marketing of AGS products, etc.).
Twitch could end up offering something that is different enough from Steam that gamers want to have both platforms installed (or even ditch Steam at some point).
