Alright, let me see if I got this straight... the OP was looking for a non-combat game to play.

As this topic has shown, there aren't that many that focus specifcally on WAR.] what a simple concept.. are we not smarter as humans than to celebrate the oldest and dumbest contest among ourselvs? [I thought the oldest contest was trying to get l*id?]

Of course he hasn't looked at many of the games on this site or on others, mayhaps too busy struggling with Hello Kitty Online, or otherwise he'd have seen that there are games without combat or "war." Seed will most likely be the most successful of these games I believe. However, I seriously doubt there will ever be an mmo with no combat whatsoever. No one in their right mind wants to play "Home Economics Online."

I guess what loses me is the whole debate over war in games. As was mentioned by myself and others in this thread no game can survive without conflict. War is the easiest way to create conflict. Made worse by the fact that the gaming industry is flush with a FPS/deathmatch mentality in both developers and gamers. While there are many avenues to conflict - which games must have - war is simple in comparison to economic, social, or other types of conflict. However, I really can't think of too many games were war was the actual theme. Until game designers stop thinking about mass appeal though I doubt there will be many games where the conflict isn't based on just physical combat.

Irony: Even if someone made "Gandhi Online" it would still be about combat.

Although I buy almost every MMO on release SEED is on my constant watch list.

Anyway. Even in games that have no natural conflict, players add conflict. I admit it, I love my DS and Metroid Prime at airports and such....but I also pre-ordered Animal Crossing and play daily ><. It is amazing how competitive players get of who can complete a museum set first, or get a higher rating from the house association.

And actually I think the OP realizes this and believe meant war as in pointless killing. Which, if people didn't notice, I agree with. There are good games about pointless killing like Contra, but at this point I expect more from an MMO.

"If you want peace, prepare for war. There will always be people who want more control/power, and in order to defend yourself against them, you need to create guns and missiles. War is necessary. If you want to remove tyrrants, dictators and other inhumane beings, you need war."

What I wonder, is why humans can't be CIVILISED enough to settle conflicts over something like...a game of checkers.  Why do we have to kill off as many of the other side as we can?  It's purely barbaric.

In some parts of europe post visigoth "wars" and land disputes were settled by games of chess. It was decided that if they lost too much of their population to internal conflict they couldn't fight off any invaders. Which was a big issue once the Roman empire was finally off their land.

I have hard time understanding what an MMO would look like without a combat system..

Furcadia is one of the only games I know that has no combat system.. mabie Second Life or any of those 3D Virtual Chat that you can find on the internet that might be the solution..

    Hello and welcome to MMORPG.com!

It is nice that you bring attention to the problem. The next step is to go even further and numerically list your personal ideas for solutions.

      - How would YOU design a mmorpg that is not about killing and war?

      - How would you reward the players? What would be the goal, or many goals of your idea for a non-war, non-killing mmorpg?

      - What are your ideas for quests that do not involve killing?

Many respects to Rob Zombie (He got tired of the "junk" clone music being created, complained about it, THEN he went out and made his OWN music. Same with Lord British - he didn't like what was available in the computer game market, complained about it, THEN he went out and made his own computer games. Sooo.... list your ideas on how YOU would like to see a MMORPG done that does not have killing and war???

killing and maiming is so fun in games purely because it's something you couldnt get away with doing in real life. who wants to play a game in which you do everything you could do in your normal life? not many people. therefore games makers, and movie makers to a certain extent have to aim to make games exciting for ordinary people.

as much as i'd love to, i cant run down my road with a massive axe hacking people to peices, the only way i'll ever accomplish this without being arrested/killed is in a computer game. hense why computer games are usually violant.

not to mention games are generally aimed toward guys, and guys are more brutal/mental than women tend to be.

I think a game should have war, of course, who doesnt like killin and smashin stuff? but.... unlike all the shity games of today, the game shouldnt focus only on war...... there is a social and economic life too u know??        a great game for this ..... i advise Wurm Online .....

In resume.... the games that dont have war are: (someone list them for me )

Yes, well thats what im trying to say here... What sort of games dont involve the simple act of killing one another? Lets look at SIM CITY... that was rather clever and non warlike (minus the UFO) There are some other MMO games that involve exploring and crafting and socializing. BUT the majority of games are about killing and the majority of any sort of entertainment from movies, tv shows, cartoons and games usualy have weapons and killing. Its like everyone is training training for warfare, death and destruction. We have all this great technology and we are intellegent beings and this is the best we can do?

War war war... and intresting topic thats come about, and that many people hate.

War is a part of humanity, it cannot be avoided... by the human nature to be the best and biggest, something must pois a threat to stop that, and wars just that.

Indeed some games need to move away from the concept of war, but maybe there can be a game with war, but many other parts to that same game extremly far from war, such a business production.

War is a hard concept to move away from... SEED i think will have no war, but i dont know how good a game that will be.

I understand what you mean with you post and that is most lickely why Face of Mankind does attrect me. First of all. All the PvP have a reason in that game, but it could also be that there is not war for days or even weeks. until and faction crosses the line and then a war will emerge. But this game is indeed orienteded on war, but I love it.

"War implies that that the point of view of the opposition conflicts with yours"

That is what all war in that game are about. With exeption of the Mercenaries, they do everything for the money :)

But SEED seems to become an very non-voilent MMO.
