Victor Roma Pre-Orders Sold Out

sempiternalsempiternal Member UncommonPosts: 1,082

It's been a long time since I have been excited about an MMOG

This game is making headlines on the news, internet and in print. It was recently slashdotted, it has been written about on the front pages of newspapers and mmorpg.com has an excellent pre-view of the game comparing it to the original Ultima Online. Here is a web based copy of a newspaper story that was printed:

Crucified gamer, Tuesday, April 4, 2006

"Jesus was crucified for the sins of humanity. Turn the clock forward 2,006 years and the same punishment is being meted out, albeit electronically, to computer game cheats."

"It is hard to compare Roma Victor to any MMORPG in the last ten years. If I had to choose, then many things about the gameplay would be more close to the original Ultima Online than any other I can think of. It is a challenging game that does not make things easy on you like an EQ or WOW kind of game would. The combat, purely skill-based character advancement and diverse crafting systems are all extremely realistic and historical. There are no /tells, the world is half scale of our real world, and the economy is the most true to a real world one I've ever seen in a MMORPG. All of this in my opinion means that we finally have the chance to see a true virtual society come into being.”

Ancient punishment is handed out for the all-too-modern crime of ganking (or gang-killing new players) as Roman-style justice returns to Britain for the first time in nearly 20 centuries.

BRITAIN TO WITNESS FIRST CRUCIFIXION FOR ALMOST 2,000 YEARS

Who will you play, a Roman or a Barbarian? A tradesman or a gladiator? Where will be from, Britannia, Gaul, Germania, Iberia, Italia, Pannonia, Africa, Scandinavia, Other...

It's an historically accurate virtual reality world - you won't find anything else like it among all the generic leveling treadmills of pretty, colorful, cartoonish, fantasy MMOs out there.  I would not recommend it for kids.  This is a game for mature, experienced MMOG players.

This game is probably not for you then.  This game is highly detailed and as realistic as possible, its an MMOG that you would want to get involved in for the long-term, more of a hobby than a short-lived gaming fix.  Read the mmorpg pre-view and check out this skill table: http://www.roma-victor.com/game/skills.php

On the other hand, there is no required monthly fee, so it may be of interest to you in a temporary nature, especially if have plenty of time to play.

But, keep in mind that 180 AD was a dangerous time to live especially as a rebellious barbarian. On any day, your swordsmanship and skills may determine whether you live or die.  Realistically, you cannot merely target someone, use special abilities and wait for the battle to end, you must aim each of your attacks and determine the level of energy you are going to use with each swing.  If you exert too much effort you may tire before your opponent does allowing him to easily kill you.  It's made to more closely simulate real hand-to-hand combat.  There is no super-powerful magical gear, all the swords shields and armor are representative of actual gear from the iron-age.  This tests your actual skill and strategy in playing the game more than how good you are at collecting gear and experience.

There is open PvP and full looting.

There is player housing and the ability to construct buildings and towns.

The crafting and economy are the most realisitic to date.

As, I said, its a virtual reality.  A hardcore MMOG that strives to be as realistic as possible.

My nickname on RV boards is Guga. I was there crying for more preorders to be available, just got mine from mmorg-shop.com

This game will finally take us one step further into the future of online gaming, not only for its design but also for the PR and CS of the company. Great Dev team and great concept.

If this game follows history closely, wont the winner be already determined? Also it seems being a Barbarian has several disadvantages than being a Roman. I hope the devs somehow make the two factions balanced.

I sure hope it comes out soon though.

The economy isn't realistic at all.

The developers will be selling in-game coin for real money, created outside the game world for that purpose, and manipulating the game mechanics and internal economy in direct correlation to how much or how little in-game coin players buy directly. That is their greedy revenue system.

The result is no player economy whatsoever.

Stay away from this horrible game design.

It is NOT hisotricly accurate, its hisotircly AUTHENTIC. Meaning that the weapons, tools, villages, buildings, clothes etc are what the romans would have used in that time period. What happens in the world is up to us (i am undecided as to play barb or roman yet, but im in a barb guild just now).

Also, i wouldnt say this game is aimed at more mature players. I am only 16 years old and it seems amazing to me.

If one side outweighs the other (my guess is that there will be way more romans than barbarians), the devs are going to add more NPCs for the smaller side. This will help balance it out.

I'm 26 and I do think this game is for mature audience. Just because you are 16 doesn't mean you are immature, age is just numbers. My 62yr dad is more immature then me :)

anyway I'm also not sure about this "buy in game stuff with real money" thing but only time will tell what will happen, I prefer a monthly fee.

Just ignore Jorev. He has been hating on this game since day 1. Oh yes Jorev, RB is soo greedy that they won't have a monthly fee! Bastards! Tool.

Thanks for this thread Sempi, so glad that the pre-orders are sold out! Never been so happy for a game and a game has never been so deserving of success based solely on a GREAT idea! I WILL be playing this game.

Barbarian of Gaul!! Legionnaire of Rome!! Prepare thine selves for the letdown of amateur game development!! Earn thine coin through the colosseum? Slaughter thine enemy for your pay? NO!! Buy your coin with a major credit card!!

Sorry, niche game at best. Just like that sci-fi game where you buy your ingame money with RL currency. It won't float boys.

  • sempiternalsempiternal Member UncommonPosts: 1,082

So easy for anyone to type whatever rubbish and half-truth they want, huh Maldach?

You can also earn your coin within the game, by doing so you will be contributing to the game and community of active players in many ways that are more important than money.

It is already a reality that currency is sold for all MMOGs that have it whether it is allowed or not.  Might as well have the developers making a profit off their currency and controlling it rather than some third party macroers that do not give a damn about the game or economy.

This system benefits the game, the developers and the players overall.  If you have a lot of time to play the game, you never need to buy any currency and you can play the game for FREE.  If time is money for you, then you can spend some of your money instead of time so that you can still remain competitive with other players.

Further, when the developers source of income is only based upon the donations that players give them, you can be sure they will crack down hard on any cheating scripters or macroers.

It's an intelligent, balanced system, one of the best I have seen and overall, unique from any other game.

The developers of Roma Victor are taking all of the best ideas from the past, innovatively developing new ones and combining and balancing them in what will be one of the most competitive and reasonably believeable virtual worlds to date, a highly immersive world to enjoy becoming lost in; living an alternate life within.

I smell another WoW. It'll be great for the first 2 months you play, then you'll get fed up with patches, nerfs, and 13 year old kids running their mouths.

RV is nothing like WOW though Leesus.  I think it is too soon to judge Redbedlam on how much patching/nerfing they will do. As for the kids, I think they will lose interest quickly in this game, because it sounds more challenging to me than WOW. You might be right about the 2 month thing? I don't know, but I am going to give it a go, it is not like I have to commit to a subscription.

Ehh...no... of course you can earn money in the game...
  • KroganKrogan Member UncommonPosts: 304
Don't like games that are based on how much money people have in rl, to me the whole point of mmorpgs is to come to another world were our life situations make none or very little difference. If your not willing to spend like 100-500$ a month on this game you can forget all about being a top player. To bad they made this crapy as system would much rather just pay the 15$ a month and have it actually be seprate world to ours.

  • KroganKrogan Member UncommonPosts: 304
yes they said you can make money in game as well but that people that do buy from them will have a huge advantage of course they want people buy money so they will make it so all the rulers, kings and emprors, even all lords will have no choice but to spend a lot of money.

  • AmarantharAmaranthar Member EpicPosts: 5,852

The money thing is one of two issues keeping me away. I don't want to play a game where players can buy their way to the top.

The other issue is about the lack of PvP control. Tell me if I wrong here, but doesn't it seem like groups of players will buy money and use their in-game finacial advantage to go around killing everyone and burning their homes down? Especially on the Barbarian side?

Other than that, I'd be really excited about his game and would gladly pay a monthly sub for it.

    Once upon a time....

  • duce2424duce2424 Member Posts: 2
The idea of purchasing money really bothers me, Like what has already been said this will create a situation were only a few players can afford to acheive the highest levels of the game.  Also the production of this game scares me.  After what I went through with SWG im nervous of trusting a dev. team that missed several development marks and then came up with this pay for cash sceam in stead of charging a monthly becasue they were woried that there base had already left.
  • admriker444admriker444 Member Posts: 1,526

You all have a misconception of how purchasing of money is RV works. There are limits folks. A player cant just buy their way to the top like you all think. There are limits each month to how much one can buy.

Perhaps if you all read the FAQ instead if being so quick to comment on something you know little about would help ???
