Why are people so mean in World of Warcraft?

pingopingo Member UncommonPosts: 608

i have played MMORPGs since 2002. I have played quite allot.

World of Warcraft is a really fun game to go around and quest in, but I have to say something. I have never meet so many mean people?

I have played wow since - March, and I have meet some nice people too, but it has probably been 90% idiots and 10% cool people.

Tons of people calling each other names in general chat, making fun of newbies in goldshire and scammers. but just the hole macho-im-better-than-you feel wow has to it. I played Diablo 2, but I don't think that was nearly as bad as this.

my guild disbanded last month due to people quitting and I have just encountered so many mean people.

I don't understand it because in other game communites I have been a part of like EVE or Starwars galaxies, people have always been really nice and friendly. but also willing to help new people and they seem to have allot more time to sit down and talk to people.

I talked to a guy told me that most wow players was children. Maybe thats truth because of the friendly graphics or the blizzard stample, but  at any rate im really sorry that there are so many mean people. I have encountered racistis and discriminating people. and people arguing against them.

just few minutes ago I was in westfall and a guy recruited people for his guild in general chat, and he got flamed to hell with people saying stuff like: "omfg u douche, use /4 for guild recruit, u idiot retard" and "get a life you little prick or i'll kill you. stupid noob" and then he talks back and it starts going.

And on the servers I have played on... its just everywhere and all the time. I cant be in a group without people fighting over loots or a guy who want exclusive rights on some items and it usually ends with that the group leader kicks people.

I just dont understand it. Some people have told me that its just the nature of a new game and that it will take time before the community will flourish but in my opinion it has just gotten worse. more people feel more uber and that they are above all others and competition is becoming more stiff and people being more ambitious and greedy. the hole must-have-reward-and-reasons-for-everything-I-do-in-the-game mantra really seems to be destroying the game.

But maybe thats just me. Im sure some of you people have found guilds with nice people. It's just - I don't have many real lifes friends who play wow and they usually dont play much. So im just trying to find other nice people to play and group with. I guess I sound like a loser, or maybe I have just had bad experiences. I don't know.

Well there are a lot of bedwetters in WoW, but that's what your ignore list is for. Just type /ignore <player name> and then pretend they never existed. image

What I did was not even pay attention to the general chat in the newbie areas, and then when you reach about lvl 10 you move to the next zone and, in my opinion, was much much better.  I play on a normal server not an RP server so I didn't expect much form the community.  I ended up being presently suprised.

I play/played on Hyjal.  I will return shortly to the game (I took a break from WoW by playing SWG)

Actually since ive re-sub'd to WoW, im suprised at how nice ive found people to be. Ive quested with 2 people on a set schedule, and have more in-game friends on my list than I did before. I have still had butt heads in groups (like warriors who dont pull or take the aggro and wonder why I couldnt heal them with my druid), but as far as assholes go I havent met many.

  • can anyone go on the europe home page for me and look at the realm status it sais there all down is it the same for you?

    Here's you answer:

Because you are on Alliance.  Seriously, I switched to Horde with 2 buddies of mine and while the community isn't perfect it's far better.  Plus you have a better chance of actually developing a reputation for yourself (good or bad) instead of being random_paladin_newb_6789.  image

Ive played both, it all depends on the server. Both sides have an equall amount of childish or immature ppl.

I might be really lucky but I've good experiences with my server,  plus I guess it helps to have friends you know before you go in.

Just as with any MMO, it's easy to hide behind a computer monitor and treat people badly without much recourse.  Just treat people the way you want to be treated and find a group of people that you feel comfortable to be around.

There are idiots in every game.  And WoW may have more, because... 3.5 million subscribers kinda out numbers the rest by alot.

The harshest a community is, the less fun those players are making.

If you think people are mean in WoW go play Guildwars. IMO I think im getting older and seeing the younger generation of players since I still play online games. IRL im 30 and I started playing UO at its release and it was my first online game. Since then I have played many online games and GW has the worst community. Somtimes I feel bad for these kids. I feel all these kids that behave like animals had some crapy parents that raised them to be that way.

As long as you're not a beggar, a complete moron, and aren't acting like an arse, I'm pretty nice to people ingame. I prefer to save my surliness for the real world, rather than a game I play to have fun, and relax.

Well, relax when the instance servers aren't crashing, anyway.

If you are in a good guild on online games it makes the game you are playing alot of fun. Ive been in the same guild for many years now. One of the many things I love about my guild is that we are a PvP guild that only plays games for PvP and none of our members smack talk or are l33t dudes. Infact its one of our guild rules that we dont smack talk other gamers even if the enemies are smack talking. At times I do beta test games and my guild is not there with me and it brings out the worst in that game im beta testing. One thing I always look for in a game in the community and most of the new games out today are very bad community wise. Shadowbane had an awsome community and for the most part still does today even with its very low population. Games with assest destruction and total open PvP with no real safe zones tend to have a nicer community rather then a game where you can just duel somone that is making you mad.

Silly man, that's because you rolled Alliance.

Roll Horde and watch more of the arseholes go away.

And when your ignore list has swollen to so many, many names... and you get tired of having to continually use it... you start realising just how overwhelmingly CRAPPY the community overall is. Not everyone, but far, far, far too many idiots who act like an immature 12-yr-old who can't speak clear English and is obsessed with L33t-speaking garbage. Never seen such a density of superior-minded, I'm-better-than-you-and-now-I'm-going-to-run-circles-around-your-PC-for-the-next-ten-minutes-to-show-you absurdity in any prior games -- UO, AC, AC2 (erp, what a waste of a game), EQ1, EQ2, DAoC, and MUDs, and more. Like the population density, hate the population's mentality.

That's weird that you say there are less morons on the Horde side but on my server (Bloodhoof) that's were I run into them the most. Different Servers Different People

That's part of the appeal of WoW, you can be a total freaking idiot and A-hole to others for 15 bucks a month.  Those people love the attention they get because they get none in HS or from their parents.

I think it is partly due to: Little to no penalty for character death, instances, server transfers, a levelling process that is way too fast and easy PvE encounters that are exactly the same each time.

I've always wondered why the more mature players seem to play on the 'evil' side in games.

Check out another server, or the other faction. My server of Azgalor doesn't seem to suffer that bad from the smacktard plague.

World of Warcraft is based on a successful RTS brand name and therefore attracted a whole new crowd to MMORPGs. Furthermore, they ran a successful promotion in countries that other companies, like SOE, often ignore (assuming there is no sufficient target group). You should also consider the increase in multiplayer games, which leads someone to want to try a Massive Multiplayer game.

Before the huge increase of MMORPG players, the usual ages were 21+, so you could expect a certain level of maturity. Now that the player base is much much bigger, so is the age range of players.

New players who have no experience in Massive Multiplayer games and how to behave in such a community will often choose popular and well advertised products, like Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies or World of Warcraft. It is no wonder that the most mature communities I've seen are in games that the player base does not exceed 100.000 customers, like Anarchy Online or EVE Online.

PvP-based games or PvP servers also tend to draw young (or not so young) crowds that prefer a competitive enviroment, not for the competition itself, but more for the recognision of "winning" and sense of superiority. It's no wonder that I've seen names such as "Uberkiller" on PvP servers. Or people that take pleasure in disrupting the play experience of others (ganking). That is not to say, however, that all PvPers fit that profile (after all, I do play WoW on a PvP server).

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

That's the most succinct and specific argument I've read, and I agree with each and every word. And that doesn't happen often. Nice summation of exactly why WoW seems to attract the hordes of bottom-feeding mentalities.

haha i agree they are not really evil they are more or less the ugliest creatures hence the reason everyone thinks of them as evil. just bc someone is ugly doesnt mean they are evil.i mean look at the night elves THEIR EYES GLOW. cant get any more evil than that
