I am in the camp that MMORPG titles need to go back to niche gaming and instead of trying the wow monopolize all player base model. That way developers can be loyal and design a fun game that fit's their specific market.
Man i so agree with this now. So sick of this try to please everyone crap. PVE mmo's for PVE players only. Give pvper's their own game too. What they are doing today is just to easy which proves its about the money first. The idea of a great game is nothing to them anymore. You want end game content well here you go with forced pvp zones.

I feel that a lot of MMOs are becoming a "rushed" effort... with the focus of graphics and visuals instead of overall gameplay and lore. When I look for a MMORPG to play, I look into it's social aspect of being a "MMO", as well as how I can be a unique part to the game and community. A lot of MMORPGs that I've been trying feels like it's more about how strong your gear is and what end-game dungeon you can run... which isn't what MMORPGs used to be about. I want to be able to be helpful to the community, no matter what my gear level or character level is... and not be limited to being a hero of the story that they implemented into the MMO. So with the current list of MMORPGs, I can't get my self to feel okay or satisfied... the concept of an MMORPG needs to be "re-thought" instead of "re-made".

There are a few games I think are really good.  LoTRO is great but I can't go through any of the zones again (started in beta).  If you have not played it you might really enjoy it.

WoW. . can't get back into for more than a month although that month is usually fun.

I just keep getting a "been there, done that" feeling.   There are a few games I would like to go back and try like GW2 or BDO but I feel like I would need to catch up on DLC etc.

Still waiting for something new.  Albion Online might hold me for a bit as a casual experience.

There have been a lot of small inovations but nothing that really makes them fresh enough.  There was some game that promised a level progression that was even. . can't remember what that was but I would try it for a change.

MMOs brought something new. . now it isn't, I have a large back catalogue of single player games like Witcher 3 etc. that I haven't played.  I will stick with those until something exciting comes along.  I am starting to enjoy more casual play though so maybe that new western game. . or I could get into Star Citizen if it releases while I can still grip a HOTAS.  I might die before that game sees the light of day.

FF14 is by far the most well-polished MMO I've played. I don't even think I've encountered a bug.

The problem is, whether you like it or not, a subscription. It's classic for a reason, you're playing a persistent game, which means it needs to be updated to not become stale. And if it needs to be updated, there has to be resources, ideally not from a shitty cash shop that is P2W or sells shit-glamour items. GW1 was one of the few to pull it off. GW2 is going downhill when the developers don't listen to anything people say and only update the cash-shop. Legendary armor 5 years later....?

    More subscriptions please.

Players need to get away from the 'A game is only good if it has a sub" mentality......FFXIV isnt even a good game imo...It is too much story driven and too much on rails.....if every single game was sub only there would be about 5 games available and the rest would be out of business....Its an outdated payment method.

To be fair, GW2 never promised or even talked about Legendary Armor at all, the very idea of it is a recent thing released with Heart of Thorns, so it's only been a year and half.

In fact, originally Legendary Weapons were just a skin on an Generic Exotic Weapon, it was not till a  few years later that they even added in ascended weapons and armor.

Reality check. if you were waiting for something they never said they would make, they are not slow, you're just a fool.

I won't deny my foolishness. I still hold to, besides GW1, the only MMO's I've stuck with had subs : WoW, FF14, DAoC, WAR, with LoTRO on the free list now. Which for their livelihood of a solid game was right.

Edit : With WAR failing due to sub model. I suppose when it boils down to it, it's always about survivability. I change my opinion to, those that can pull of a sub model should, but it's not necessary for a quality game.
  • ZionBaneZionBane Member UncommonPosts: 328
Games like Dungeons and Dragons Online, have an Optional Sub Model, where you can pay a sub and get full access to the game, or you can play F2P with limited features, and at your leisure buy piecemeal all the parts of the game.

It works for them, because their game is entirely instance based dungeons, and what they do is sell "Dungeon Packs" and Premium Races/Classes.

It's not an outdated payment method, in fact it works extremely well in many areas of life. It is simply a payment method that no longer works for a lot of MMOs.

That's not to say it couldn't work again in the future. As with all things, it just depends on what the customer thinks is worth paying for and any implications the business model has on the game itself. For me currently, there are no MMOs worth subscribing to, but additionally I've never played a F2P MMO where I wasn't dismayed by the cash shop and so I never play F2P MMOs beyond a couple of days trial.

There are also international considerations to take into account. Subscriptions do work well in the west (assuming the quality of the game justifies it) but F2P is the payment model of choice throughout Asia. In the past, developers have had to maintain two codebases in order to satisfy both markets and this is part of the reason why everything is F2P these days - it is much easier to just go F2P for both markets.

no there isnt however one has to fess up to reality and how things are and take responsibility if they decide that the 'MMO' part of that entire equation is that important to them that they are willing to forego all the good gaming experiences now happening in the industry
If they decide that yes, the MMO part is so important that they are willing to forego all those gaming experiences then they need to take responsibility for that choice and basically not bitch an moan about the entire gaming industry but be specific to only MMO and remind readers of that often because its an important detail.

    Mmorpg landscape is still stagnant.

-Fotm, post apocalyptic survival games which are not mmorpgs. They are smaller scale, easier to develop games within an entirely different gaming genre.

-Mutated or cloned mmos focused entirely on mass market appeal. The McDonald's of mmos.

-Emulators due to the proven interest for the original mmorpgs because of the shit I previously mentioned. The lack of professional hosting and development make these a volatile experience.

Why is it still stagnant? Because true mmorpgs take a very long time to develop and the several old-school, resurgent games have yet to be released and are still likely a year out, even for those most promising to meet their release goals.

Current state of mmorpgs: Still waiting.

    You stay sassy!

Don't think any MMORPG is going to take the crown from Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 any time soon. It feels like they came decades before their time. Maybe 10-20 years from now, in 2030-2040, we will start to see MMORPGs like that. Perhaps the ingenuity of human dungeon masters will even be replaced by smart artificial intelligence by then.

Nothing would make me happier than a genuine Neverwinter Nights 3 in the spirit of NWN 1 and NWN 2 but with modernized graphics and maybe some new features.

NWN 1 and NWN 2 are the only "MMORPG" type of games where you can expect something truly unexpected to happen at almost any moment of routine gameplay. Once I was grinding rats in a sewer and a cunning midget devil tricked me into selling my character's soul to him in exchange for a ship (played out by a dungeon master). In a blink of an eye I was teleported from the sewers to an exclusive map with a burning ship filled with pirate zombies, and I was trapped there for a while. There are so many moments like that from NWN 1 and NWN 2. MMORPGs are mostly just boring and predictable but NWN takes the best elements of pen & paper RPGs and MMORPGs and combines them in an incredible way like no MMORPG can do.

The only other interesting alternative to NWN 3 I can imagine is a new kind of MMORPG where PvP and PvE become fully integrated by allowing people to play birds, predators and monsters persistently, a bit like in Alien vs Predator games. If a ranger has a wolf or hawk companion, that wolf or hawk is another player who is playing that creature. Humans, bears and orcs would all be played by people and they would have a true incentive to hunt each other, for food or crafting materials. You'd PvP a wolf and take his hide to make a leather armor.

That stuff is actually possible in Neverwinter Nights games too. You can be a monster, a dragon or an animal there persistently. What I miss is the servers where they focus on that aspect. There was a cool server with a kingdom of undead where you could begin as an ordinary skeleton, wraith, ghost or zombie and progress into more powerful forms of that type of monster. Sometimes you would cross paths with players from the kingdom of the living or the kingdom of dark elves, and you'd have an exciting moment when PvP and PvE become blended. There was a day when we (skeletons, ghosts, zombies and wraiths) went to hunt a powerful NPC demon and a group of humans, dwarves and elves came upon us during that fight. Another day when our undead group went to a cavern and a group of humans, dwarves and elves entered the cave after us, and we all got ambushed by a group of dark elves, a mix of player characters and NPCs, who came deeper from the cavern.

If its the games I am thinking of the response is going to be its not an MMO. Despite the fact that they have had well populated private servers with pleanty of rich content and plenty of people to talk with the out they are going to look for to continue the sea of tears is...its technically not an MMO. But yeah, very ground breaking for its time, now however in games like Life is Fudeal you can have deep MMO 'feel' but it not be an actual mmo

In the future I'd actually prefer to see a game for only 100-500 players per server if the sacrifice of not having thousands of people can enable some other features in the game. Maybe that's the actual problem of the industry. There are modern MMORPGs for thousands or more players and modern games for 1-64 players, but there aren't enough modern games with persistent immersive worlds designed for 100-500 player populations per server. That would actually be the ideal sweet spot for me because the world wouldn't feel too lonely but each player character would still be able to stand out without drowning in the masses of clones.

you might find the study of Dunbar's number to be of intrest. it explains how there is a finite number of social relationships a person can have before it becomes messy

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
