Ever since Turbine took over administration of all their games from Microsoft I swear Turbine is cursed!
The only thing keeping this company alive is AC1
Think trubine will survive another failed game? AC2 was great dont get me wrong, I played it for 2 years... but with all the mistakes and such, not to mention the bad rap turbine has gotten from ac2 closure just after expansion release...
makes ya wonder if a decended of the Lee family runs turbine :P

I think DDO was a bit rushed but I think the game is going to age really well. All it needs is a bit more content and fluff which another few months of patches should hopefully give it.
AC1 was all Turbine M$ comes in at the end to publish = good game
AC2 was M$ paying turbine to develop their game they felt was better then AC1 = flop
I personally think DDO is really going to benefit from LoTRO. It should help Turbine have 3 games available that are all completely different from each other to offer an all access pass. So people that don't think DDO is worth paying 14.99 for a month may pay 19.99 for AC1, DDO and LoTRO. I will be really surprised if Turbine doesn't offer some sort of all in 1 pass shortly after LoTRO launches.
Ya, going to have to wait and see what LoTR does when it comes out - but I just cant help to think that turbine is cursed, im glad I dont work for them -- meetings would be hell :P

I wouldnt be surprised to see an offer similar to that before lotr-o even launch's,lol. Perhaps a ddo+AC2 combo for the price of one. DDO's "image" is already tarnishing and Turbines is only getting worse. I believe they need to do something quickly if they want to save the sinking-ship.
Lothlore
Turbine does everything wrong possible. the only thing that works are their commercials.
since AC2 they lost most of their reputation on the mmorpg market. they never listen to players and they NERF like sick, they even change the whole class system from one day to the next.
I am not the only person that gets a bad feeling when i hear the company name "Turbine"
Turbine for me is the synonym for "Failed" where "failed" means that they have no clue what kind of game system the people want.
Nice grafics is all they can offer, no depth or athmosphere, no identification with the characters.
i almost bought D&D and i am happy that boards like this exist. i bought every mmorpg every made.
the ones i was playing over a long term are
EQ1,AO,DAOC,WoW,AC1 the rest were just a waste of my money Horizons, AC2, CoH, EQ2, and and and.....
Exactly. Played all the mmo's on the market. hell i would probably pay for Knight Online before i waste another dime on a Turbine release. Watch at Xmas this year the first Xpack will be released. Then comes along March break and Turbine releases an article explaining that they are closing shop cause they cannot afford to pay for the use of the names Dnd and LOTR.
The same thing will happen when LOTR is released. Though it is a completely different game, I can still see turbine destroying what customer base they have up to that point with another pointless game where they think because it uses the names of someone elses products they will finally be on easy street. AC1 for sure wont be able to support these other games lol. Couldn't even support AC2. Oh well back to playing Oblivion till something non-cookie cutter with some real depth comes out.
For the longest time now the only games that have come out that appear to have the best content, best graphics bla bla bla end being titled Horizon's or Dark And Light, just to name a couple.

Nice, eh, it goes both ways.
Ooo, gotta love the old switch'a'roo. oh well you have every right too. just like you have every right to defend a complete %$^# game for the 90% of the playerbase who dont have time to post about how crappy the game really is.

The two things in my opinion that caused this game to fall apart is they tried to hard to make it a pnp game - which is fine, in my opinion they did a decent job captureing that in a realtime world - but I think a game that is all instanced lacks the things why most people play - community and social is such a marjor part in a online rpg. No world to explore and get into trouble, all instanced = people who get bored quickly and leave the game because lack of immersive world and tired of being repeatative.
DDO is another game that will just sit on my shelf and collect dust - I dont really know what happened to game developers these days...
Just a few years ago - when the major games (still have a large player base for the most part) EQ, OU, AC1, DAoC - there is a reason why they were so succesful - they are immersive, they dont rely on crappy quests and dumb content - theres a point to their games...
Again they were open to an open community - which usually attracks older people say 20+ were is games now are trying to attrack, younger markets or designing them that way -- like for example Guild Wars - wtf its a graphical chatboard its not even an mmorpg - why is it even listed on this site?
with each generation of mmorpgs games just lack deep immersivness and depth - producers are like lets get this game out as fast as we can, advertise like crazy for the game to become a floppy joe - collecting dust on a shelf.. If a game holds my attention for 6 months or more then I would say im satisfied with my purchase.
I am guessing indurstry leaders are starting to figure this out, but again well just have to see.
Im trying to develop CO to be immersive, depth, something that captures the immagination to bring you into your character and characters life. We have a huge world (look at our map) probably several thousand square miles -- at least the size of texas. lots to do and full PVP - because player created content from PVP and guild vs guild makes far better game play -- which is why im keeping an eye out on darkfall :P
Look at SWG that was an awsome game when it came out -- yes after a while it started to lack in the content department but overal it was a great game.. then SOE just nuked it and made it into an archade game -- and look what happened.. the game has lost every one of thier long term fans -- if it wasnt for the last movie to bring in people who never played the origional version it probably would have shared AC2's fate...
well enjoy

I think MMORPGS never had real content. They should have been called MMOHaS. (Massive Multiplayer Online Hack and Slash)
Why, you ask?
Because most of the time you "explore" huge empty world, hunting mobs, gaining levels and getting loot. (Typical H&S game). Or you finding resources and crafting. (Like Sims, for example) Or you just spend hours chatting with other players. (ICQ)
I got disillusioned from MMORPGS market promises really quickly, canceled my accounts (I've played AO and AC) and stayed away from MMORPGs for two years.

No game company can make enough content for those endless hordes of people that play mmo's, sooner or later youve done all the quests and explored the whole game world and you end up grinding the same stuff over and over again. History of mmorpg's has shown that all this takes few months to happen. Developers just cant keep up with the players, no one has that kind of resources.
But there is one way to add loads of content without hiring 1000 more coders: let the players decide what they want to do in a game by giving more freedom and less restrictions.
Open player-vs-player conflict, clan/guild/faction politics, player driven economy (means a working crafting system and trading), town/empire building, war, peace, killing, creating and all that stuff. You just have to make it right, not some semi-ready garbage that you decide to call a game.
DDO tries to do the exact opposite: no player freedom, no crafting, nothing but questing/raiding/grinding... is it really a miracle that players ran out of content in few weeks?

That is why I thought SWG pre NGE was such a good game, you had more of that SIMS type of experience mixed into your description of H&S. People would sit around in cantina's and talk, or decorate their house, or buy new clothes.
IMO that is what makes a truly great MMORPG type game, combining the SIMS with Hack and Slash.
DDO is just Donkey Kong Online, all you do is smash barrels. Err..that's it.
No annoying animated GIF here!

It depends what you are looking for in a MMORPG. I looked for something different. I don't know what exactly... A game that would give me real MMORPG experience.
DDO isn't exactly what I was looking for, but somehow if feels different. Better that a traditional MMORPG. Less H&S, more RPG.
Look, you can say a lot of bad thing about DDO. I disagree with most of them, but it is your opinion. But there is one thing you can't deny, and if you do you are blind with hate.
DDO has great dungeons. The best I've ever seen. No, here you won't find copy-past dungeons like in Morrowind. They did a good job creating dungeons.

Well for me, DDO lasted a few days - maybe good for some, but not what I personally look for in a game... so it will take up another spot on my game shelf and collect dust :P
The only games that I have interestes is Darkfall - if they would finially finish it :P
Dark and light - although nervouse about it - but may purchase anyways just to see for my self.
Hero's journey looks promising too
and of course my teams game --

I am sure you mean Roleplaying, like in Roleplaying Game, you play a role, a character, even though the idea of roll playing intrigues me...
PVP, been there, done that, since Meridian59, Pre-Trammel UO, EQ Zeks, AC1 Darktide, AO, DAoC, Shadowbane, Eve, etc. etc. pp... What a pvp game comes down to nowadays is always the same, a pissing contest about who is the best and who has the most time to equip their characters the best way and how to roll up the best flavour of the patch template. Number crunching for 'mostly' unsociable people. I used to be a die hard PvPer when I was younger, didn't have a good job that I want to keep and spent most of my non-party times playing mmorpgs. UO PvP was fun, how people cried, made OSI implement Trammel, game died... EQ Zeks was biggest PvP joke ever, the game wasn't designed with PvP in mind, AC1 Darktide was fantastic, played there from day 1 and for 2 years, but PvP was ruined by ice-skating queens (gear anyone?) and other exploits, which Turbine never cared to punish people for until after it was too late, AO was ok but too much grinding to get to a decent level to actually participate in the PvP, same for DAoC, where you also realised that PvP is just another grinding treadmill to get mor Realmpoints and RvR Rank, for what? Shadowbane was nice again, build your own cities, risk losing them in war, but we all know what happened to Shadowbane, Eve is ok too, but to do proper PvP there you either have to be an anti-social single person who like to camp some spots waiting for newbs all day or spend all of your life in a huge corp, let your dog and children starve, mine so much that you wish you had bought a goldfish instead of the game, etc. There are much more fun ways to PvP outside of MMORPGs, play some poker with friends!
Exploration always good! But only so much to explore in a game made by maybe a dozen content developers and ten-, hundred- or millions of players who in some cases have 20+ hours a day to rush through that content made by the 12 people. You see where it ends? In spoiler pages where people post walkthroughs to everything, so that soon people will be able to make posts about how lame the amount of content in each and every game is...
Guild management is something you can do much better with tools outside of the game itself, guild webpage, forum, etc. Not sure if I get your meaning...
Character customization very important, I agree, but if a game lacks the graphical or game mechanic features to do it, I use my imagination and distinguish myself from my fellow players by my way to roleplay, which is unique for every person. That is character customization, doesn't matter how many polygons my avatar has.
In game freedom? Are we talking about the same games here? The ones that play on worlds that are like a disc, where at one point you run against an invisible wall because there is no more world behind it? Where you are caged into maps by mountains that are impassable?
MMORPGs still have a long way to go until they are perfect, and each development studio approaches their vision of that in a different way.
Yup your absolutly right there.. each have their own ideas... but in my experiance games that are developed by players for players make better games then a large corp purchasing someones idea and rushing it out the door asap... This is why i think darkfall will be a hit (if its ever released) :P

Well like i posted before this was the game a few of the original founders of my EQ1 guild in 1999 decided to re unite for.We were all seriously into D&D thang.
I can now confirm at the 1 month mark NONE of the 7 of us that went into it are still playing.
Problem-nothing at all to do but instances. This becomes tedious and totally boring.A mmorpg is about limitless options or at least many options. In D&DO there is one option-instance,instance.
Had GW not occured then maybe this game would stand a fighting chance but lets face it you can do same in GW and pvp and even there is a tad bit of exploring outside an instance there and GW is FREE.So its very hard to justify paying even $1 for a game which has less to offer then a free play mmorpg apart from the name D&D.
I will not even touch soloing as i had ppl to play with as we logged in similar times but this can be a serious problem espically if the gam fails to be popular.
As for turbine well they kept on screaming how M$ messed up AC2 for them with the forced early release, poor chat that kept crashing(ran by M$) and billing .
But lets face it would turbine a game that barely broke 100k subs on AC1 had gotten the rights to 2 of the hottest licence in RP history-lord of the rings and D&D without M$?
I seriously doubt it.They have messed up the D&D and really need to put full throttle on LOTR and make sure they get it right or else i see bankruptcy for sure, espically now M$ deep pockets has gone away to vanguard side.
AS it is the D&D fans are totally unhappy with the game, the usual mmorpg fans are unhappy with the game.
MMORPG fan here, love DDO.
Same for everyone I play with, guess tastes are just different, same for roleplaying styles, which make every instance (how is playing a D&D pen'n'paper module different from being in an instance, or do you magically meet other D&D pnp groups while you are playing with your friends at home?)
Roleplaying is limitless, if done right.
Exploring outside of instance in GW? How is that possible? Everything is an instance in GW, same as in DDO.
