I could include a poll, but that only has 10 options. Just curious what everyone is playing now. Me I'm waiting for Vanguard, so nothing.

Playing: The Saga of Ryzom since march 2004
I'll make my own poll.
I was playing D&D Online, but I just cancelled my account (gunna give that game time to get itself together, and then maybe resubscribe in a year...maybe).
--------------
Played: Age of Conan, DDO, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, DaOC, MxO, EQ2, and so on...
Wish List: Jumpgate Evolution, Star Wars: TOR, Star Trek
I quit wow like 3 weeks ago after playing it on and off since beta. This time I wont be going back unless they make a new pvp server with different rule sets.
I tried the eq2 pvp server last night but I probably wont be buying the game. I have exams coming up and beach weather is coming so I probably wont have much time to play anything until fall anyways.
My /flex is an AoE stun.
For the past two years.
I like PvP.

My Family playes Everquest Online Adventures Frontiers. The only game for us at the moment. Hoping for an EQOA2.
The way you play the game is the way you live your life.
gamertag - Swaffle House
Once upon a time....
About to resign for City of Heroes now though.
i have been playing ConquerOnline. But i am tired of their lack of GM participation in the game.
I have been playing a beta version rpg called Ferentus.
Anyone have suggestions of good RPGs that are not very difficult to play?
But will probably get started on WoW when it comes back, but I'm waiting for WAR to come out too.
It's amazing how sooo many people play nothing.
I don't play any mmorpg anymore, they just arn't fun atm.

Don't click here...no2
WoW, sure is fun but nah it gets boring. Tibia, fun but yeah. Runescape, might start play. One of the best MMORPGs.
I was going to try DAOC but it sucked you had to type a creditcard to just try the game. Same thing in UO I think. Linnage would be fun to try. Waiting for Pirates of The Burning Sea. RO seems fun aswell.
Need to try SWG and some other games. The game need to have the feeling.
^_^
Unfortunately, you may have a long wait.
Currently not playing a MMORPG as I am waiting on Vanguard first, then WAR. If DF ever sees the light of day, I am potentially interested. Otherwise, I'll try either DAoC or ATITD.
EQ Progressive server? I was initially drawn in by nostalgia, but after a very hard look, there are too many compromises - especially given that SoL will be unlocked sooner or later. I had 18 very good months playing EQ (Apr 01 until Sep 02) but it was the right time then to /quit. I will not go back for nostalgia, because the game that I loved no longer exists. If SoE released the server 6 months go, I would have caved in but they have missed the boat.

Before that I played lineage II for a year.
The latest games I have played:
Everquest 2, fun but not a fan of the loading times
WoW, overrated and was too boring
EVE fun time in that game, but don't feel like paying monthly payments for being able to land or whatnot.
Lineage 2 LONG LONG ago, in beta I played it. I thought the game was fun and would LOVE to play it, but I'm kind of sketchy about it
I am curretnly thinking about playing Lineage or Auto Assault. I've been hearing some good out of AA and have building my interest up. But I'll probably just not get any game.
I'm mainly waiting for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes to deliver. . .already in a guild and everything, just need the game now.
Total time played: 9125 Days, 21 Hours, 29 Minutes, 27 Seconds
Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds

You're right due to a number of differing reasons:
1. Dillusion of 2nd Generation MMORPGs
Vets from the UO and EQ days (even later with DAoC) - as these represent sandbox (PvP), PvE and RvR - are a lot more fussy because a lot of the MMORPGs offer nothing different other than cosmetic gaming mechanics.
2. Companies shooting themselves in the foot
EQ2 should have been massive. Premature release coupled with some truly questionable decisions regarding game mechanics i.e. far too many instances, rigid class structure coupled with experience debt (ugh). Whilst we're on the subject of SoE, no discussion can be complete without reference to the implementation (or rather, implementation by royal decree) of CU then NGE.
DnL pulling a Horizons, even bordering on Mourning! DDO releasing without enough content.
AO was the poster-child and motherlode of the WORST releaes in MMORPG history - quickly followed by SWG. After the Horizons debacle where the game performed a volte face right before launch, it is incredulous that developers are STILL not getting their act together. No-one expects a perfect release without technical issues, but some of the releases have been absolutely appalling given the apparent level of expertise on display.
3. 2nd Generation gaming mechanics
Brad McQuaid called it right on the money when he said that the gaming mechanics introduced by 2nd Generation MMORPGs "threw the baby out with the bath water". There is nothing inherently wrong with these game mechanics (although I reserve judgement on experience debt) but developers swung the pendulum from one extreme to another by removing the challenge and interaction from games.
4. The WoW effect
This is linked to point 1. As some others have mentioned, a sizeable amount of the WoW demographic are brand new to the genre and have 'missed' the golden age of MMORPGs. I don't believe that is necessarily the case because the genre is still relatively young - we've just got to get through this dotcom bubble first (too many inferior products on the market). WoW has brought tons of virgin MMORPG players to the genre and this demographic will start to shape the future development of MMORPGs. Whether this is a good or bad thing depends on point 5.
5. Dotcom Boom (redux)
The MMORPG scene is like the 90s dotcom boom. So many over-hyped, inferior products on the market due to too many people throwing around too much money. Sooner or later, players are going to start to become MUCH more demanding for their buck then they are at present - even though my gut tells me that the universe is still supplying far too many suckers - and then there will be a big shake-up. But until players stop this pre-ordering nonsense when they are being charged at sale even though a product has not even gone into beta, let alone Gold release (!), then developers and publishers alike will be all too eager to milk the golden teat until they get powdered milk.
Despite a number of players getting burnt, there still isn't enough to stop developers pulling slight of hands. Only until the WoW crowd depart from WoW to look for another game, and then get burnt, we will see a big ground-swell refusing to part cash unless the product delivers. Like it or not, WoW not only brought in new blood to the genre, but raised the bar for MMORPGs in terms of delivery. Every MMORPG has it's bugs, technical issues, blah blah blah .. but compare and contrast AO, Horizons, Mourning (Ha!) and now DnL to WoW's release. Apples and oranges.
There will still be lots of dross out there, but hopefully Vanguard and WAR will raise the bar even higher than WoW and FORCE developers to polish their products rather than inflate their products with lots of promises that fail to deliver. Of course, the real innovation will come from niche games like ATITD, Eve Online, FoM [to an extent - bad execution], RV etc, except we'll all be bleating too much to notice :P
