Breakaway News - Amazon Game Studios' first fledgling project is on "indefinite hiatus". The announcement was made earlier today in a brand new post on the Breakaway site. The team will be taking time to "iterate and evolve" the core game play to deliver the experience that players are looking for. How long it will take remains to be seen and the post indicates that the time frame is open-ended.

Well, it's better than pushing forward with a lackluster product. I'd rather see them put it on hiatus to see if it's worth continuing than keep going to release a crappy game.

I hope this isn't a trend for the rest of their games. They had some interesting ideas, but in general it's a little scary if the first game is put on indefinite hiatus. I mean it's a good thing if it wasn't a good game and they want to make it better, but what happens if they all do that.

It would be nice to see SOME deveolper/publisher do something right for once besides CD Projekt/Red (not that I'm dissing CDP/R). Seems like lately all big developers are looking for ways to completely piss off their playerbases/loyal fanbases.

Talking with the folks at Wargaming, most of them shirked when talking about focusing design around esports before a game even releases. They all said that a game had to be good first then you add additional development to accommodate for the game's esport demand. They seemed pretty wary about talking competitiveness before games reached a certain level of commercial success. I know Breakaway was built around it being an esport. I wonder how much of it is because of that focus in development.

Guess it wasn't the Breakaway success they thought it'd be. I'll see myself out.

Hmm, "thrilling to play" games don't seem likely candidates to go on "hiatus" and that's the sort of word one uses when they plan to fire all of the idiots involved while Mgmt tries to figure a way to salvage something from work done so far.

Lackluster would be the understatement of the century. I spent less time playing this travesty than downloading it.

This title was seriously the one that had almost everyone saying "Why are you guys pushing them one first? Dude just focus on New World...." But I guess its better late than never that they realize it. Lets hope for no loot boxes in any of their titles, since that seems to be a creeping theme lately....

Lackluster games, we don't need.  I would say that lackluster games are a dime a dozen, but I've not found any that kind of payment model.  They tend to be someone else's get-rich-quick scheme.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

I played the alpha a few times. Graphics were nice, but the gameplay wasn't my cup of tea.

I hope we see some more info on Amazon’s New World MMO soon. I really like the concept of it.

Call me pessimistic, but if they are having trouble with a sports brawler I can't see them fair much better with an MMO.

It really isn’t pessimistic. I’ve been burned by MMO hype plenty of times. The idea is awesome but the lack of information doesn’t make me want to claim it as a day one purchase.

When i saw the game play for the first time, I started laughing hysterically. I couldn't stop laughing for a good 5 minutes.

When they started showing teasers and introducing the game on streams, It was hilarious watching people try to sell this game. It reminding me of that spokes guy for Betheseda coming up on stage to announce (at E3), the addition of Creation Club to monetize their games.

I swear. 2017 has been the biggest joke in all aspects of life. Just when you think things couldn't get more ridiculous, someone comes a long and proves you wrong. Amazon really stepped it up with BreakAway. Hopefully 2018 isn't worse. My stomach is starting to hurt from laughing so much.

Its a shame but its the right thing to do. Make a good game first, don't release crap, and the studio will build a great reputation. I am a full supporter of Amazon studios as I have a friend who works for them. Their current internal idea pay models (or lack thereof) is going to be interesting and I want to see how it plays out. Their current plan is to give away 100% of their games for free. No cash shop, no box fee, no subs period. However what they plan on doing is in non intrusive (ie popup advert style) in game advertising to pay for the games. Like in world billboards or soda machines with real world companies. Since the games will be 100% free everyone can download it. Then they can go to Nike or Coke and say your brand can be seen every day by X number of people. We have X downloads, and since its completely free it will be huge, so there is a chance for advertisers to get their products seen by millions of the young. Sounds like a very interesting proposition.

I think it's on hold so the can launch a crowdfunding effort to finish it.

Maybe they realized people who crowd fund games arent really required to finish them.

Well going by a post on another thread crowdfunding a game is your duty as a gamer especially if you want to talk about how all current games are shit. Think of it as an enthusiast gamer tax.

Getting something playable at the end? That's just unexpected gravy.

Luckily I don't think all current games are shit so I get to save a lot of money being an uncrowdfunder.

Worth remembering that Amazon Studios making games is only one part of a two pronged attack - the other prong being Lumberyard. And based on what Amazon have been reporting Lumberyard has seen some serious development. Lumberyard could even be the main focus when the dust settles.

If nothing else what they have done with Breakaway has - probably - provided insight into what they need to do to improve the Lumberyard experience for independent developers.

Now whether independent developers will use Lumberyard is another matter but there can be no doubting that Amazon are serious.

Of the three games they teased, this one interested me the least by a country mile, so... meh.

Now get busy with New World.

They were too late to the party. The market for that type of game is already oversaturated. Was a good decision to axe it early. Hopefully they just shifted the employees that were working on that over to one of the other games.

This sort of tells me they simply used some marketing firm to decipher the popularity or potential of their game was, found out not much and put it on hold.
I never once took this studio seriously, they immediately looked like a speed shop, just whip out garbage fast to start making money.

If they announce it to be a 4-5 year project,i make take them seriously.I have seen all the moba's and arpg's ,browser games to last me a lifetime, enough with the crap games.
