Guild Wars 2 News - Yesterday, ArenaNet announced that new "Mount Adoption Licenses" are now available at the Guild Wars 2 Black Lion Trading Company. For 400 Gems, players receive "an available animal at random". Every box is said to contain a unique breed, though players are unable to purchase specific versions. Rather the "drop" from the purchase is randomized. This latter fact has set the community on fire with the GW2 Reddit thread on the subject beating out previous "top threads" from the past.

The heck are you talking about poor people? The complaint is people want to directly purchase the things they want, not have a CHANCE at purchasing something they want. GTFO troll.

All the kids seem happy, so gambling in MMOs must be fine. Why don't we do away with the consoles and just send them to a casino?

So, it's a loot box basically?

If the community is kicking off about it, I'm sure ANet will sort it out. I'd be surprised if they didn't.

I'm assuming mount skins can be purchased even if someone hasn't unlocked mounts yet?

Are all mounts same speed? If they are I care less about looks, I hate it how mmorpg have become glamour fashion show.

I don't really get the issue here. Guild Wars 2 has had cosmetic loot boxes from the start. Having more purely cosmetic items of this sort isn't at all unreasonable for a f2p/b2p MMO.

I think the pricing on these is rather high, though. It probably should be closer to 350 gems each per license, 325 each per 5, and 300 each per 10.

The problem is that it was fee for service for what you want. Now Anet is pushing into gambling instead of direct purchase.

My opinion of Anet really dropped with this move. Definitely on the road to what people will put up with.

I used to tout gw2 as a fair b2p model, I wont be doing that anymore, they are getting just as f2p with their model as any other cheap game now.

Well, the fact that you can't get duplicates, if I'm reading into this correctly, does help matters a lot.

However, I will call the quality of these inconsistent. While some of them (especially for the Jackal and Gryphon) look phenomenal, a lot of them don't change enough to warrant the price tag. The low quality ones really seem like they should have been ingame rewards rather than lootbox filler.

Things are changing, there's a rising tide against RNG loot boxes. Even some games which already have them are reconsidering and in one case the developers announced they were being removed.

If Devs want to sell something, just put it up in the store for whatever price the market will bear.

I don't RNG to decide to buy a game or its DLC packages, don't ask me to RNG if I want to purchase something within the game itself.

I agree with you, but why don't you try telling NCSoft that? The way NCSoft has been going lately, we'll be lucky if Guild Wars 3 isn't "everything we loved about Guild Wars 2, but on mobile."

It's not like we didn't know they had lost all of the respect for the game the moment they started to flood it with particle effects, wings and BLC-locked skins. This surprises me not, just reinforces the knowledge of their absolute lack of respect for themselves, their product or their playerbase at this point.

why are casinos specifically bad for young people? Because I dont know.

When I saw all that space in the mounts section of the character panel I knew they intended to fill it with something. You can also go there and preview all the skins available so far.

That Jackel, reforged warhound skin is kinda expensive for 2000 gems.

This is not going to end well...

Studies have repeatedly shown that violent video games have little to no effect on a developing mind. There are exceptions when one only exposes themselves to particular types of games, but those exceptions involve unused parts of the brain shrinking, rather than any sort of desentisization or mental disorders.

Gambling at any age, but especially at young ages, leads to the development of addictive habits or at least exploits existing ones. Kids do not usually understand the value of money or financial responsibility, which is why we hear horror stories of kids racking up thousands of dollars of FIFA microtransactions on their mom's credit card.

But that way you'd only have to buy it once. :)

Once you get past all the (valid) objections about gambling and so on, what you're left with is a system that's as consumer unfriendly as it gets.

"But hey, you never know. You might get lucky!"... said every lottery ad ever.

It takes a pretty messed up mind to like loot box systems in all of their different incarnations.
