But the job openings for Diablo specifically are enlightening too.

I think it's only a matter of time before an MMO style Diablo becomes a reality, but I couldn't guess whether that's 2 years from now or 20. Reading this article, however, the first thing that came to mind was Marvel Heroes. A Diablo MMO made like that game might be very successful. It could easily be cross platform. It would maintain the spirit and style of Diablo (isometric ARPG). It would allow for infinite expansions. It would be different enough from WoW not to totally destroy its playerbase. Most importantly, though, no one has yet nailed that formula. Even Path of Exile (well liked on these forums) is hub based, not truly persistent.
Well Marvel Heroes has already attempted the MMOARPG thing as have several korean games with two big ones on the way. The ones we've gotten really not that great to be honest. The biuggest problem is lockout timers. Nobody wants them in an ARPG. We want to choose when to play them, where to grind and for how long.
When WOW was announced I was bummed that it wasn't a diablo MMO
instead. But once I started playing WOW it made sense as there was a
ton more diversity in the Warcraft RTS games. Diablo as an MMO is very limited imo. The only playable race is human. The world isn't really that diverse.
There is still a lot of room for improvement of the ARPG genre. A high budget POE with the same dedication to improving the game as GGG and the rewarding combat of D3 is certainly possible. POE has the best end game in the genre for sure but there's definitely room for improvement

The first MMO I played that had stuff reminding me of Diablo were actually Lineage for some reason but I am not sure why... I just felt it was a mix between M59 and Diablo when I played it in 2001 but it might just have been because I played those 2 games a lot in the past.
I don't think Wow could live side by side with World of Diablo though. Wow is already 13 years old have bleed people since 2010. All Wow player I know are Diablo fans as well and I don't doubt for a second that they would move on if a good Diablo MO came out.
At best Wow would loose 50% of it's player (if WoD would be good), at worst it would be above 80%. I just don't see Wow surviving it besides being one of those nostalgia games like EQ that is still around but don't make any impact on the genre anymore.
World of Overwatch would be a rather different thing, there I could see the 2 games co-existing as long as Wow release a good expansion or 2 and continue to upgrade the graphics.
I am not so convinced as you that it have room for infinite expansions, I feel that they would become rather similar to eachother. Warcrafts IP started out for faction warfare, Diablos as going down a huge dungeon and I think the possible variety of the Warcraft IP is far stronger.
Personally, I think they're going to do an mmo with all Blizzard ip's like Heroes of the Storm does and name it The Nexus or something like that. The possibilities with cosmetics alone in a game like that are near infinite. That's the idea that gets me most excited anyway.

Nah, they're not going to "take a chance" with any of their IP's, they've done a "mix" in Heroes of the Storm because it's lorewise ridiculous (and it doesn't matter in that type of game). I think we'll see a standard isometric Diablo 4, but with much more "longevity" than D3 had at release...It's now clear for Blizzard that they need a Diablo with more longterm goals, with seasons, and more for the "hardcore" audience to do at launch.
The first person shooter they're making is almost 100% certainly either a Coop shooter with Esport arena fighting, or a pure Esport game
Not to rain the parade. Blizzard won't do MMORPG's anymore. It's not where the money is currently.
Their full focus seems to be on eSports, with OverWatch, Heroes of the Storm and Hearstone.
So at most, they probably try to make the next Diablo into an eSports game.
Don't be fooled by the Massive Multiplayer experience requirement at those job postings, since eSports is essentially Massive Multiplayer too, when it comes to the whole server backend infrastructure and organization around eSports in general.
Or just look at Destiny 1 and 2. It's basically a lobby game, but has a whole MMO like backend infrastructure due to the millions of players online concurrently each day.
Diablo 3 has this basically already too. Since it has multiplayer CO-OP.
An openworld version of Hellgate: London set in the Diablo universe. Action combat with a limited amount of passive and active skills you can set, with modifiers just like D3 uses. You would play humans only on an Earth that gets invaded by Hell constantly, a bit like the invasions Tabula Rasa had, emergent game play and all that.
Furthermore, Hell rifts would spawn all over the place which you could then enter solo or as a group and the random dungeon inside will scale dynamically.
Diablo is all about fighting so crafting would take a backseat. I would however like a huge element dealing with fortifying settlements and villages by upgrading the shops, defences, blacksmiths with materials and plans. Quests would also be semi random, the focus would be on fighting and getting better gear. Levels should be non existant except perhaps for unlocking all skill slots and skills, so like D3 has now.
The world would also be inhabited by a massive number of named and special mobs, spawning randomly. A war torn and dynamic world is definitely a must.
And I don't mind if it has Dark Souls aesthetics too.
It sure as hell (hah!) won't happen. But I can dream...

As long as WOW keeps making money, I do not see them pulling the plug on it. I think the point of BOA is to go back to basics for a bit with Horde vs Alliance.
DOAC is still the MMO I judge other games by, My first and still my favorite.

If they announce a Diablo MMORPG, it will most likely take years before we get our hands on it. I think people are thinking the game is going to launch in 2018 and cannibalize WoW's population. The reality is we probably wouldn't see the game for at least 4-5 years. Which at that point WoW might have a much smaller audience. I think Blizzard is smart enough to realize the juggernaut that is WoW isn't going to last forever.

I really don't see the point in another MMO by Blizzard. It would just be a reskin of WoW.
Why? Because they'd want another '15 year MMO'. So you could expect to see much of the mechanics currently in WoW.
I doubt they'd use the newer-styled combat systems seen in games like ESO (aka targetless combat). And you can be sure they'd bring into that game the bullshit RNG and Titanforging that's specifically designed to make you feel like you have to login (at least) weekly.
This MMO-ification of Diablo would also fall flat on the ground in front of 'old school' Diablo fans, who already complained that D3 felt like a "WoW version of D2". -- Everyone's bitched an moaned about how Legendaries in WoW feel "mandatory". In Diablo-verse, this was never a problem. Sure you had the bullshit builds for Necro, but no one really complained that certain items were necessary to really run a class efficiently. Today, that is not the case. In short, the entire gear system of Diablo would be neutered to line up with the current demograph's mindset.
---
FYI: I doubt they'd call it 'World of Diablo' because it'd be shortened to the same acronym of one of their most hated expansions, WoD. Instead it'd probably be called something like 'Sanctuary Online' or maybe 'Chronicles of Sanctuary'.
Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising everytime we fall.
Not a bad thought, but Blizzard doesn't do anything they don't want to do. They announced the idea of classic servers, and if they weren't ready to announce something, it was that.
It's important to remember that Blizzard is trying to dominate genres of games.
WoW is their MMO
Starcraft is their RTS
HOS is their MOBA
Overwatch is their FPS
Hearthstone is mobile/card games
And Diablo is action/adventure
Why would they take another series, move it out of a different genre and take away from their own game in another genre? That doesn't make them more money; it would, if anything, end up costing them.
WoW stays the mmo focus while they work on fixing the Diablo series and continue to keep it as an action/adventure game. There will be no World of Diablo. but instead they will focus on recreating the action/adventure genre.

That's why I have a hard time envisioning doing something like that. My gaming dreams are about building games I like and want to play. I wouldn't want backer input or any of that crap. I'm not sure I even care if other people want to play. If they did, okay whatever, but that's not what I'm looking for.
I do value community driven projects and I think there is a time, place, and proper people to drive those. I'm not one of them. I'm more of a "have a vision and want to see that realized" person. I think people who make games, music, and art for other people are amazing.
In fantasy world, if I did make a game for others to play, you can be sure of two things. I'm not interested in selling progression and I would be open about formulas and calculations. I don't care if people want to know that. Maybe if they're the DM they'd have the power to modify that.
So do you mean you would rather make a single player game where you can tailor the experience completely to the specific player's experience?
And hey, I don't disagree with being open about your gameplay systems. Let players see and understand it; let them game it, if it's possible. Then you can see clearly where your formulas might have exploitable weaknesses and you can adjust accordingly.
My post was a light-hearted jab at you guys cause you and I have argued til we're both blue in the face about the topic of Kickstarter and loot boxes. I hope so because I really want a new Blizzard MMO but I'm tired of WoW. Which is why WoW 2 wouldn't work. World of Starcraft would also be really cool, but it's probably going to be WoD.

World of StarCraft and World of Diablo are only a question of when, not if.
Both IP's are too large and too well developed to not eventually be expanded into a full MMO.
