Anybody skip the recent gen of mmos?

I'm curious how many people are out there that just aren't interested in what they're making these days. Have you had any enjoyment at all or are you just filled with let down after let down? Currently I'm playing an mmorts and enjoying myself. I tried crowfall and i'm not interested in it because its just a battleground stretched onto a game world. "Capture the thing" gameplay isn't what i call good world pvp. And as for the PvE games, I'm done with quest hub grinding and level grinding.

Every upcoming game I see looks like they're doing some new innovated world design thing but I suspect gimmicks. They also have graphics that are too good. That's a turn off for me as it means they spend their money on cheap thrills. So I really feel like the genre is spamming casual stuff and it'll actually be a while until something sensational comes out. Oh well there's always other genres.

I only bother with MMOs now if I can get in a good guild. If you are turned of be questing and PvP, that only leaves more sandbox elements. Totally agree about graphics, but are players going to play MMOs with below standard graphics? I just don't know, the idea that every new game must have better graphics is ingrained.

Right now i'm completely "off". Didn't even play the last GW2 expansion, and i used to play that game a lot. The only thing i'm slightly hyped about right now is WoW:Classic, and after watching some Pantheon videos i've got to say it looks interesting.

Skipped almost all of them and the upcoming list of MMORPG's looks even worse. Luckily, other genre's (mostly single player RPG's) have been stepping things up.

I wouldn't say I've skipped the current gen, however I haven't committed to any MMO since I quit SW:TOR in Feb 2013.

Since then, I've beta tested or tried out some of the big ones, like Wildstar, ESO and FFXIV. After the disappointment of SW:TOR, I set myself 4 criteria for a new MMO and nothing has met that criteria. My criteria:
    • Deep combat system - I need my brain engaged. Sadly, this rules out most of the current gen as action combat is really shallow
    • Objective-based world pvp - I love fighting over keeps, capturing flags etc. Essentially structured pvp with no player cap.
    • Horizontal Progression - vertical progression causes so many problems in an MMO environment, it still shocks me that it's used. Yet, they all do.
    • Strong IP - I prefer it to be an IP I already know, like Star Wars, but I can accept new IPs if they are to my taste. Ultimately, I want to actually inhabit the virtual world, so the IP has to be good.

Most current gen MMOs fail on all counts. Thats fine, I've accepted that I'm not the target market any more. But, MMOs have provided me with my best gaming memories, they are the pinnacle of gaming when done right, so I keep my eyes open in the hopes of finding a new good one.

Luckily, Camelot Unchained fits all 4 of my criteria, well, might be a bit lacking on the IP front but not by much. I know I still have to wait a while but I've waited this long, another year or two should be fine!

I've tried the recent gen of mmorpgs but to be honest the last mmorpg that held my attention was FF11, anything after it I get bored of in a week or so, mainly because they are too easy, and too solo focused to the point they are bascally a poor single player game with a text chat room. Also I find the loot treadmill stupid and they need to do something better for endgame.

Bascally the issue I have is the recent gen of mmorpgs took out the required social aspect of the game, they also switched from being about the journey to rushing to level cap for the loot treadmill. Back when I played ff11 was before the Abbysea expansions which pretty much trivilized the entire game.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

As the only MMORPGs I've enjoyed for longer than 3 months all released in 2004 or earlier  I'm guessing I've skipped several generations.

LOL, you obviously never played Vanguard, by played I mean not tried it. Anyone who thinks BDO and Vanguard were similar is talking shit.

    BDO=PVP

    Vanguard = PVE.

I mean I could go on but I don't want to embarrassed you more.

I played Vanguard from beta to last day.

Hmm, I dunno,  when I played VG at launch it was on a faction based PVP server.

I think it quickly closed, which is one reason I never gave the game another try once they fixed it up some.

Times change I suppose, 10 years ago I was at least curious to try every new game first-hand, now I am satisfied with watching a few videos and reviews, that's usually enough to tell myself "nope, not for me"

On the "too good" graphics though. Technology moves on, games are bound to look better. At the risk of sounding like someone who's trying to sell you an encyclopaedia, the team of CU are constantly trying to worsen their graphics: every model they introduce goes through a careful polygon-count reduction process to make sure they are the bare minimum in order to have the best performances. If you already checked CU out and think that looks too good, I suppose that's comforting for us backers, since the graphics are at the very bottom of the priority list and they still manage to scare players off as been too good to be true

As for crowfall part the open world thing realy isnt in yet for testing all they got is a snipit of a battle ground where there just got capture point since they dont have the seigeing mechanics in yet and what not, wouldnt judge it much atm imo

BDO = PvP no i relay dont think it is, there no purpose for that pvp and only a couple classes can do any kinda of PvP. Its a PvE game that one with PvP tacked in as an afterthought. Koreans games dont usualy come as a Pvp main game they dont seem to enjoy PvP a whole lot, probaly cause war is so close to them with North Korea.
BDO Pvp is basicly used to claim limited good Pve spots so they can continue there farm for eternity due to no level cap which is why i quit that game. It was farm farm farm with the occasional PvP to keep a farm spot which was tedious and boring.

I stopped speculating. It boils down to 2 things. Either you can play a game that is currently available or you can't. Even though I still long for the early days of MMORPGs I'm not certain I believe we will ever see that again. But that doesn't matter. What I want has no bearing on what is available. All I can do is choose to play, and pick one, or choose not to play anything.

Yeah, just wait another 5 or 6 years until it's actually done... then form an opinion on it... oh wait, by then, you're going to be pinning over the next kickstarter dog and pony show that promises imminent release.

Almost everyone on the site is waiting for some kickstarter messiah to become a reality... that in an of itself doesn't bode well.  It's like EA announcing a game today that will be released in 2040 and you all giving your left kidney for it now.  Boggles the mind why you get hyped for something you HONESTLY know isn't going to be released any time soon.

There aren’t any current MMOs of interest to me, and there haven’t been for like 10 years or something. I’m interested in Camelot Unchained and Crowfall. But it’s going to be a long time before those games are finished.

Other than that, Classic WoW is easily the most exciting upcoming MMO news I’ve had in a long time.

I did try a couple sandboxes. First I played tree of life, which i found surprisingly neat. The only problem was there wasn't enough content after I spent about 150 hours in it. But this was before its official release, and on release the pvp changed substantially as they removed the neutral faction that was pvp safe. I also tried wild terra, which i found grind worthy. But after a 100 hours I found their to be little content to keep me in the game. I think both these games are light on content, and its no coincidence.

I hated the rush to level cap but i did it because I felt the game didn't really start until you were at level cap. Back then you couldn't even get a dungeon party together for anything but a lvl 60 dungeon. So I'm done with those type of mmos.

There has only been one "letdown" and that was FFXIV.i expected so much more but the changing of the guard was already happening inside of Square before the game even released.

Other than that,i have usually expected little and seen exactly what i expected. From Rift to GW2 to BDO,i found myself quitting within the same day or a day later.Even those other over hyped games i found to be simply over rated, like the Skyrim's and Zelda's,Dragon Age.

I look at games from the entire scope of the game, not simple gimmicks ,i see past a gorgeous character creator or past some best of END game nonsense,i look for a an overall well designed game.
As of right now,i am not excited about anything in the mmorpg genre,i do not see a HQ game coming.I am not even sure if i will ever see one ever again because times have changed, there seems to be a whole different era of gamer or what i call FAKE gaming, example Vrchat.

I knew the world was changing when i see people walking around with selfie sticks,i drop my head and just sigh, what has happened to the human race.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I don't know what qualifies as this generation of mmorpg's.  The past few years I haven't played many new releases.

    2017: -
    2016: Tree of Savior
    2015: Trove
    2014: BDO, ESO, Wildstar

The only one I stuck with for more than a week was BDO.

It seems like mostly Asian games are MMOs now.  I used to play a lot of JRPGs when I was young and the art was 2D, but for some reason, I have difficulty getting into the 3D art.  It is beautiful, but for some reason, it turns me off.  The only Asians games I have enjoyed are single player.  One is the Dark Souls series and the other is the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.  Another factor that turns me off is when I look at the classes available they just don't look very interesting to me.  They are usually simple and very combat PvP focused.  The great thing about single player games is balance doesn't matter that much so you get lots of interesting abilities.  In addition, seeing the questing model usually turns me off.  I can't stand playing games where you pick up quests at ! mark and deliver to ? or whatever they replace said feature with.  I guess I'm burned out on that.  I find it to mindless for getting immersed in an RPG.

BDO is a very pretty grindfest with lots of AFK gameplay in a strange eastern-perceived pseudo-medieval setting.

It's nothing like what Vanguard was.

    open world sandbox. non instanced.

Has a mini game system like diplomacy / has an amazing crafting system / Amazing Role playing components / Almost identical resource gathering with the added plus of the node and worker system /

Maybe you and I played a different version of vanguard ...... or we just played vanguard completely different which is another thing BDO has in common, no two players will play it the samw way.

I love BDO, but the game still has some anti-RP elements. Like the gender locked classes, or the weapon limitations.
Give me BDO with ESO's character classes and development and you'll have a winner.

Crafting and Diplomacy in Vanguard were revolutionary. So many great ideas from old MMOs have fallen by the wayside. This has to be one of the most interesting and one that could be so much more.

Give us BDO's graphics and possibly economy (must admit did not see as much of that as I should have), with ESO's play structure, throw in something new like Vanguards diplomacy and put the themepark meat in an outer bread sandbox roll. You can but dream. :)
