I have played this game off and on since release.  Never seem to be able to play it for long, probably because of the horrible space design.  As to longevity, as long as the game is profitable they will probably keep it going, but I would not be expecting any big expansions for it.

Gonna revisit this post when they announce the next xpac.

I would say the one dev is still very much talking to the community.

    Fixed!

I am a fan of SWTOR and I was a bigger fan of SWG. SWG had the capability to keep me interested longer due to its sandbox nature.

Having said that. I feel that SWTOR is already limping toward life support. The expansions are nothing more than single player story content. Some of the most linear gameplay you will ever see in an MMO. They take a year to crank out and you can cruise through them in a weekend.

Time to move on or move back. I'm over all these weak theme parks.

honestly i dont care either way about this game. i had fun doing the story missions but to me it was allways a single player game with some co-op content.

but if shutting down this game means getting a real MMO star wars then im all for it.

Will EA shut down SWTOR? Well seeing how long they've milked Dark Age of Camelot I'd said no. But in reality the choice for shut down or not isn't truly in the hands of EA or Bioware. All it would take for the game's demise would be for Disney to decide SWTOR is not a good reflection on the Star Wars franchise and refuse to renew the license when their contract runs out. The exact situation that killed Star Wars Galaxies when Lucas Arts decided enough was enough. And considering how much the execs at Disney seem to dislike and have thrown out the rest of the Expanded Star Wars universe, SWTOR also seems not to fit with Disney's business plans. So its days could very easily be numbered.

Now if the game doesn't shut down and the team shifts focus to another game property how will SWTOR continue to get new content? I'd bet Bioware/EA will do it in the same ham-fisted incompetent way they've been running the rest of their games. By turning over content production to third party developers and then trying to cobble the results into something that doesn't completely resemble a total hot mess.

As someone who loved SWTOR, played extensively, and maintained my subscription since it launched it was definitely all about the story lines for me. I could play alt's with completely different story lines and even repeating some of the classes was fun too. However, about the middle of last year I noticed a lot less content being announced or implemented as far as story lines go. I kept hoping they were preparing something, but I finally had to jump ship over to ESO and am enjoying all the story based fun over there. I am close to cancelling my SWTOR subscription; I was just hoping they'd give me a good reason not too.

I hope not, but i think that at this point they dont really know where to take the story next and what new galaxy wide threat can they come up with after the emperor has been defeated, everything that we may face after that seems small in comparison IMO. Also players keep asking for new endgame content in form of raids as they should be, and this is something they just can't seem to provide anymore. I mean, its been a year almost since the Iokath raid started rolling out and its still not done, they just don't have the resources to give the playerbase anything mayor and potentially game changing IMO. It is a sad truth of it. Im thinking Bioware Austin likely have the will to keep the game alive in some capacity at least, but EA overlords may just pull the plug and say it is no longer worth it for them at any point

If they made another one at this point it would just be another Destiny 2 with light sabers.

Just kill it off and replace it with a sandbox survival game with a PvP battle Royale game mode.

    Fin.

SWTOR launch was mediocre - "thanks" to primitive Hero engine which couldn't handle even 16x16 PvP without dropping to 3-5fps. And then I've faced EA greed for the first - and the last! - time: during F2P transition they've asked for +15$ to fully unlock my account - after I've paid nearly $100 during launch.

So EA/Bioware can shutdown it any time and then release whatever they want - I won't buy their stuff anymore, it's way too expensive ($2000+ to unlock everything in the latest Battlefield as I heard).

    Thank you for your time!

I actually wanted to ditch WoW for this game back in the days. I remember my GPU dying on me and all I had left was an older card that from the benchmarks would barely give me 30-40 fps, so I delayed getting the game until I would buy a new card.
It was a blessing in disguise. Just a few months later everyone that went to try the game was back to WoW. We had plans to move the guild and raid in SWTOR, but raiding was shit, and later on completely fell off the picture.
By the time Wildstar was out, almost nobody played SWTOR anymore. Very few went just to play the new stories and immediately left, like you'd do with a single player game. The game got infected by the usual predatory F2P crap so that was the final nail in the coffin.

By the way, people told me you had to pay for additional ACTION BARS. I think it was true? Makes me puke. Nice job destroying a classic title like KotOR, what a mockery. Was probably one of the first hints Bioware is no longer Bioware.

This game really needs to be shut down. It has ran it's course. I personally have cancelled my subscription on it. I don't like where it has gone the past year. Forcing me to do stuff that I don't like to do and then merging servers really screwed me up big time. Just let it go.

I do hope they shut it down because i want the dev team out of jobs and the active playerbase with no game to play.

I will watch some bbw latina porn and then cry myself to sleep. I hope everyone is as miserable as me. It's a stepping stone to my happiness.

This guy gets it, which raises the real question, why do the rest of you guys don't? The unhappiness of others is what you should ultimately be striving for. There is a finite amount of happiness in this world. Hope and wish for everything and anything anyone could possibly like is ruined and dismantled. That's the only way you'll ever find true happiness! Spread the hate!!

SWG stayed up until right before SWTOR released, so there's no need to shut down SWTOR to get a new Star Wars MMO in the
    pipeline
  • FrodoFraginsFrodoFragins Member EpicPosts: 6,059

I hope not. Because eventually the low income gamers will ruin it for everyone requiring F2P/B2P access. MMORPG is gone and dead. I hope they make a Starwars MOBA.

ugh. 3rd party MOBAs always fail as they are cheap copies of what's already out there
  • BruceYeeBruceYee Member EpicPosts: 2,556
If they shut it down the blowback from their players will be 100-1000x worse than CoH considering some have spent 100-1000x more than anyone ever did on CoH.

I am a huge SW fan...I travel to go to Star Wars events, have had photos taken with Mark and Carrie etc. That being said, I wouldn't play a new Star Wars game as long as it is being created by EA. I have lost all faith in the company (and it has nothing to do with the BF2 fiasco...I couldn't care less about that).

    I don't think they would.

I don't see any western company making a high budget mmorpg for a very long time. Why would they? The chance of them making something that people will like (and I'm not talking about early star wars galaxies peeps) is just as iffy as any mmorpg.

I do value your opinion, but I think most underestimate how much money they would make off a Star Wars MMO.

When SWG was out, Star Wars was still considered to be "nerdy". By the time SWTOR released, it was beyond mainstream. The nerds, moms, dads, jocks, and freaks liked it. If a new Star Wars MMO was so to release, it would make so much money... especially from all the hardcore fans via weekly cash-shop clothing.

I'm thinking they would make a destiny style Star Wars game. That would be super fun. Not a fan of Destiny or the Division either but I would play that

What he should of said was that there was no road map for the game going forward in the ending months of last year. And not just that they failed to complete and implement what was on their last road map to this date which will carry over in 2018 which will mean that every thing else will get pushed back yet again.

Historically by the end of the year SWTOR has always published a road map for the up coming first quarter of the year. That did not happen last year and so 2017 ended without the obligatory "Stay Tuned, Coming Soon™ Carrot on a Stick" post detailing what is to come. They were shamed on their own forum and finally released a very brief plan as to what was in store for their customers at the end January.

Not going to happen, EA and Disney have a contract where EA has exclusive rights to star wars games. Doesn't end til 2023..if they don't renew it.
Even though EA has the license until 2023 it doesn't mean that Disney can't step in and change some of the conditions of the contract if they feel that EA  is failing to meet or is damaging the Star Wars brand . The real problem would be to find a developer that is big enough and whom is not working on to many projects of their own or whom is even capable to work on a Star Wars type project.  What this IP needs is to have two developers working on the game and competing against with game design, game play and features which would be good for all concerned.

People keep saying they wont make another Star Wars MMO..... That would actually be a terrible Business Decision by EA... they have thee MOST POPULAR IP in the world. they would have to be idiots not to make a better OPEN WORLD STAR WARS MMO that actually is good and i believe they can do it. Also I highly doubt anyone else can out bid EA for Disney's Star Wars gaming license.
