Why is there a mentality on this site that thinks if SWTOR goes down, we automatically get a replacement? Look at how many Western Developers are currently creating AAA MMORPGs. There is your best answer to the possibility for the next SW MMORPG. It's not good. This is it people. SWTOR take it or leave it for yourself, but don't think it's blocking the way for the next great SW MMORPG. It's not. So wishing for its shut down brings nothing.....ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the genre. And personal feelings towards EA won't make a better one happen.
SWG is dead and gone. It's never coming back. Neither is any kind of opportunity to replace it. SWTOR is still around. If you ever hope to enjoy SW in an MMORPG experience, I suggest some of you rethink your attitude towards SWTOR because that's all there is and most likely ever will be. At least in the foreseeable future.
I'd be surprised if SWTOR closed down as the only reason would be for the same reason SWG closed down, a new deal is made with someone else. There's far to much name recognition to not have a Star Wars MMO or several, one day.

"A sign many herald as EA’s strategy of supporting online game play to continue revenue streams from games."
Let me correct that for you it should read: "EA’s strategy of ONLY supporting online game play". This is not just the way EA are going, others like Eidos have stated that intention, while others are simply doing it by default.
I really cannot see there is any question that this is happening, it is simply a matter of timeframe; personally I only see Indie and a few AAA holdouts like Bethesda producing solo games after 2020/21.
EA took a hit regarding the lootbox fiasco...but they still planning on adding them to Anthem....talk about flogging a dead horse
Not much of a hit. Their stock has rebounded, it's higher than it was a year ago.
If it still hadn't recovered, it would be akin to a disaster.
If they receive the same kind of hit after Anthem releases for the same reason, I highly doubt stockholders or EA itself can attempt to ignore the pattern.
Yeah but it more than recovered.
You are correct, if the same thing happens that could be troubling. At the moment they are set to exceed expectations in 2018. So we'll see.
I disagree with Frenchie that it would have been a disaster. Look at their stock curve. It was too steep. This corrected the slope to where it was before last fall which was still rather decent. They have a long term strategy that investors apparently like. People like their games. Until that changes and they take huge revenue hits across franchises or some other large scale event happens it won't affect their stock price.
I think you'd be surprised.
Star Wars had the world's largest IP, and by all reviews, is great fun. Yet the sales were lackluster and the stock dipped noticeably. That's abnormal for Star Wars. It's abnormal for EA. It's abnormal for DICE.
Anthem has no popular supporting IP. Let them release it attempting the same kind of lootbox progression system, I'm willing to bet they get the same kind of response, if not worse. There won't be any DICE/Star Wars fans to give it the benefit of the doubt.
While SWTOR was heavily hyped, I'm not sure that it was ever really all that popular. When I looked into playing the game myself and tried to find information about it, the level of fan site activity I found was about what you'd expect of a niche indie game, and not consistent with being a popular AAA MMORPG. Maybe the game simply has little appeal to the sort of people who create or populate fan sites and wikis (admittedly a tiny fraction of MMORPG players), or maybe the main fansites were ignored by search engines or shut down just before I looked into it and not yet replaced. But I found it strange, as I had previously had the impression that the game was more popular than that.
I would say the devs are still very much talking to the community.
Yeah, that confused me too. I'm a founder and I still play. Sure, the updates have slowed down now, but the devs are still active and events still happen.

really? i found it to be one of the better ones when it came to fansites etc.. just look at dulfy.net it even has a sub section on mmo-champion.com
I find it funny that this article comes out the same day as new content comes out. I understand that it (SWTOR) is not everyone's cup of tea. But it is (IMHO) one of the better MMO's out there.
I do notice from this site (MMORPG.COM), that it doesn't get a lot of coverage as far as trending or most popular lists on the front page of this site. Coincidence?
The server merger was needed and now you see average numbers of 172 characters with 2 to 3 instances in both republic and imperial sides.

This game is far from dead.
I must apologize. I said......

I was in error, today it is the most popular on the list but I believe that is just do to this article.
Star Wars Galaxies of Heroes makes 4.8m a month just on iphone. No way Old Republic is pulling those numbers.
AAA MMO's are dead.
And that's the thing, why should they spend millions and millions on making another new mmorpg only for all the drama that will enuse on the forums, for it to "hopefully" do "ok", and then in a few years someone to say "when are they going to make a new Star Wars mmorpg?"
When they can spend a bit less on other types of games and get better return.
Yep, anybody thinking that this game going belly up would do anything but decrease the already miniscule chance of spawning a bigger, better SW game is smoking some really good stuff.
I've been contemplating taking a break from my current game. Maybe I'll check this one out again. Thanks to threads like this, I'd almost forgotten that I had fun in SWTOR. Thanks for reminding me I enjoy this game.
So many salty and negative comments here. I actually enjoyed SWTOR quite a lot. It's still one of those few mmorpgs that require some skill to play, not just push 1-4 buttons like a dumb monkey.
The stories and classes were great, though the game feels very outdated and bit wonky to play these days. I would love to hear some news of a new Star Wars mmorpg in horizon.
I have played this game off and on since release. Never seem to be able to play it for long, probably because of the horrible space design. As to longevity, as long as the game is profitable they will probably keep it going, but I would not be expecting any big expansions for it.
Gonna revisit this post when they announce the next xpac.
6.0 is coming. Just wanted to point out the premature statement. SWTOR is fine.

Okay, so can yall officially stop using SWTOR as click bait when things are slow around here or..
I mean I know its an easy target because a lot of people here don't like or play SWTOR but still.. I mean there has to be other games that are actually dying that you can talk about.
