Gothic 3 better than Skyrim

I played Gothic 1 quite a bit yesterday and it is a fairly immersive game.  The graphics aren't great and the combat is a little clunky, but it has a lot of atmospheres that games in the era contained and is lacking in many of today's fantasy games despite their superior graphics and more complex musical scores.  I can see why it got high scores.  It reminds me of Everquest, but with combat closer to Morrowind.  The combat is a bit strange.  You have to hold the action button and press the button for moving that will swing your weapon in that direction.  Jumping is fairly goofy looking but has a lot of character.  There are some bugs here and there where you get stuck.  None the less there is something about the art style, music, voice-overs, and dialogue that is really immersive.  You often forget that the 3D objects in the game look like low poly shapes.  I felt the same way in EQ.

oh you reminded me of something in Gothic 3.

The score is great but at times inappropriate. It just sort of plays over and over again and has a variety of themes but sometimes the music makes no sense to what you are doing.

    Lol

I will get there eventually.  I'm going to progress from 1 to 2 and then to 3.  Sometimes what finds annoying another finds amusing.  For instance, the jumping is kind of amusing to me in the first game.  Others might find it overly silly.

One thing I really love is that you can come upon these completely different terrains randomly.  You are walking along and there is a forest right in front of you, but you can walk around it.  Sometimes it just changes right from plains, to forest, to desert, to swamp, etc.  There are also caves littered all over the place.  It is kind of foreboding.

If you want to go even more "old school", you can get Ultima VII for a couple of bucks at good old games...

    Thank you,

I already bought all the Ultima Games, but I've only tried the first one so far.  I thought it was too primitive even for me and I've been playing RPGs since the days when there were only Monochrome and EVGA 16 color video cards/monitors.  Number 6 and 7 look like they might be doable for me.  After playing Gothic for a bit I'm tempted to go back and try some games like Lands of Lore and the oldest Elder Scrolls games which I never played though.
  • Flyte27Flyte27 Member RarePosts: 4,574
Hehe yeah Ultima I was really primitive :)

Graphics were really improved starting with Ultima 6.
I've been looking at some screenshots of Ultima 4 and 5.  They look eerily like Dragon Warrior for Nintendo.  I don't know if Enix copied them or the other way around.

Some people say the combat was hard. I just say it was unnecessarily tedious, and close to broken.

Gothic 3 is good for what it is, but has dated gameplay mechanics and features in some regards that you have to love otherwise they are just going to detract from the global experience. Modding for it is also considerably less involved and has considerably less to contribute to the user experience.

Like as User's last comment on fighting golems highlights. There is a nice depth to the rules governing the mechanics, but the way it plays out he is glorifying kiting a few monsters around picking away at them until they die. That's the same level of experience you can get by playing a ranger and kiting a mob in an MMO with your base attack.

To be comparing different games based on arguments that rest ultimately on preferences is itself inane as ultimately the claim that one is better for such reasons is itself a false statement.

Since the comparison was made however, I would preferentially take the Elder Mods games specifically because my user experience can be so greatly governed by my own decisions thanks to the breadth of content that springs up around each title. Even the combat mechanics can be changed to better match given preferences in many cases, which is really nice.

For example I don't think I'd ever replay Oblivion at this point without Deadly Reflex, but I enjoy the fact that I can specifically choose and tailor the experience based upon what the developers have given me as well as what the gaming community has contributed to the title.

Having played several hours by now I'm going to have to disagree with delete's assessment that it's "better".

Don't get me wrong, I'm having fun, but some of the systems don't really make sense. Like, I have to pay a trainer money to raise my strength/attributes. I completely understand the idea of using trainers and paying to get trained but for attributes it seems silly.

Magic doesn't use a reticule but archery does?

Worst thing, some of the oddities that the game throws at you. I was luring skeletons/zombies out of a cave and it was something of a hectic fight when all of a sudden these lizard things were in back of me and attacking me. Ok so dead. No worries, I'm ready this time. Load up the game and change my position and there are no lizard things anywhere . Oh wait they are in a camp so far away and blocked by trees that "how in the heck did they even detect me?"

Similar thing with cape verd (or whatever it is called). I decide I'm going to try to liberate it, go up to the tower that is holding a captured palladin and I'm called on it by the orc guards (good). I then run up the tower, they chase (also good) go up to the top nothing there, go back down to fight the guards and they gave up "sort of". Then two of them kept going around the corner and vanishing. I "think" they fell through the roof, not sure. Got killed when they remember I was there but no worries, try again.

Except this time, I check that nothing is on the top, I'm fighting and suddenly guards come from the top (where there was nothing moments ago, and I'm surrounded.

It's not that this game cheats but it cheats!

Not to mention arrows going through my attackers but if I hit them in the same spot in the next attack they hit. wtf!

I should add I have an amazing computer and the game runs like butter up until the the consistent intermittent brief freezes. This then makes it so that my consistent hand movement for the mouse then whizzes my view to "somewhere on the screen that doesn't help when I'm fighting".

I hope your using the Steam 1.75 with out it its a broken mess.  Download from Steam and it auto installs.

I'm not having any of these problems, It runs very smooth coding wise:

    - Some times I get hit from behind by something I wasn't expecting or agro something else.

    - I haven't tried liberating any towns yet, in all the hints I read, they say leave all of them for the end because it gets too hectic and you loose out on a lot of quest.

    - I've been totally avoiding making any kind of trouble to not have the entire town come down on me..... People say leave that for end game.

    - In older videos, some say Melee is under powered.  That's how I'm playing, but building my archery now.  But with my sward and shield NOW at max... I'm not having any problems and fighting several things at once.  However I'm still in the first area, have not gone to the desert yet.

-Some times if a good NPC is fighting something, I'll lock on to the wrong target, again the entire town would come down on me.... Be careful of who you hit. I'm not sure if this is cheating, but reload the last save.

    - This is everything I can honestly think of....Very little bugs if any

It will be a while before I play the third game, but I've gotten a bit addicted to the first game.  There is something about it that is immersing me and getting me to want to play more.  I'm glad there are no in-game markers to guide you around.

The NPCs are fairly amusing.  They are mostly brutish types so if you can't find the humor in that you probably won't enjoy the game.  Even some of the mages are jerks and weed smokers are jerks.

I think the game has the right amount of dialogue.  It's not too much and not too little.  Everything is voiced over.  The few books in the game aren't very long-winded.

The difficult mobs and easy mobs are all mixed together.  This is similar to EQ style.  It makes traveling around a bit dangerous.  Some mobs also call for help like wolves.

    The atmosphere is fairly nice.

One thing that bothers me about the Elder Scrolls games is that the dialogue is often a bit long-winded.  There are also way too may long history books.

It ran for me without any patches at low resolution but was crashing a lot.  I installed some community patches that allowed a higher resolution and fixed some things like removing the FPS cap of 24ish and removed the permanent windows title bar that showed up even in full-screen mode.  There are still some bugs in the game, but you can save anywhere.

This patch should get rid of the title bar that appears in fullscreen (basically the title bar you would see at the top of the window in windowed mode.

    https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/4-gothic-and-gothic-ii-fullscreen-fixes/

This should have everything you need to run in higher resolutions.  If you are using Steam you need a 1.08K patch for the game.  Then you have to install the player kit 1.08K.  I believe I also installed another playerkit file that was right next to the other.  The files are listed in order of installation.  I believe the 1.08K patch has to be run as an administrator.  After you install those you have to install the system pack.  This adds support for a newer version of directx and higher resolution.  You can translate this page to English with Google Translate.

Here is the FPS removal patch I believe.  I'm not sure if you need it after installing the system pack.  I had installed it before the system pack so I'm not certain.

I don't even know how I feel about Skyrim now and I'd currently consider most CRPGs to be better than it. I played the shit out of it at launch, but when attempting to replaying it recently I was shocked by how shallow and meaningless everything felt. It didn't help that I was playing Underrail right before that.

I'm not sure about you, but I didn't have to create a new shortcut with arguments to use higher resolutions.  After I installed the system pack I was able to switch to 4K resolution via the in-game video options.  I don't think it's necessary to do that step.

I didn't go that far. I don't think it's necessary to create a shortcut either and I'm not playing at 4k, just 1080. Have any of the community patches caused you issues?
That is a good question.  I'm not sure if these bugs were in game without the patch or not, but here are a few I ran into.

Sometimes when talking to an NPC I get stuck.  No menus will open so I can't exit the game.  I have to close it by alt-tabbing and killing the process in task manager.

Sometimes when I am jumping off a hill I get stuck on the way down and again have to kill the process.  Again it blocks out opening menus.

When I sleep in a bed sometimes it locks me out of menus again and I have to kill the process.

Occasionally things are invisible in game.  The graphics for them don't show up when looking at them from a certain angle.

That's about all I've seen so far, but it's easy to kill the process and restart.  I save often.

I forgot one additional issue of getting stuck.  Sometimes I jump into the water and end up below the surface.  At this point, I can't seem to swim up and end up drowning.  I'm not even sure if you are supposed to be able to go below the surface of the water.  I know you can swim at the top.  You wouldn't think a drowning mechanic would have been programmed into the game if it weren't possible to go below the surface, but perhaps it was something they were working on, but decided not to implement.

In addition, you probably want to run gothic.exe as an administrator.  It's an old game and often those run into access violation problems if you don't.  You can make it permanent under the exe files properties under the compatibility tab.

Skyrim has been out for several years now, its sold millions not just on PC but on PS4 and on the  XBOX, its also a game that helped sell Nintendo Switches when it was ported to that platform where no doubt it sold yet more millions.
Gothic 3 on the other hand did none of those things. :p

Be careful with the DirectX 11 files.  I started getting access violation errors when putting the files in my gothic directory.  I'm not sure why.  It seemed to be fine with just the 1.08K patch, the player kit patches, and the system pack.  I'm not sure about the texture upgrades either.  I decided to stick with the original low-resolution textures.

You may also want to enable scaling of videos in Gothic.ini.  If you don't they will be very small.  I didn't have any crashing issues regarding this.

Gothic 3 the first game where you could smoke weed. It was fantastic, just so many damn bugs in its original release. If I could remember correctly, this game had no mounts in it.

Your welcome Torval.  Have a good time playing.  I've been having a bit too good of a time playing as I've lost a fair amount of sleep the last few days lol.

I would make one more suggestion.  I would either play with a controller and software to map keys to the controller like Controller Companion or remap the keys.  At least for me, they feel a bit uncomfortable.  It actually feels quite good on an Xbox controller.

The controls are a little weird because you have to hold down the action key while pressing another key to do most things.  I wouldn't give up as you get used to it fairly quickly.

When navigating the trade window you have to hold the action key and push in the direction you want the item to go.  If you hold down the action key and push the side step key it will move items in bunches of 10.

It has lots of weed and no mounts lol.  I'm actually fine with no mounts as I prefer walking.

I decided to join the old camp as they are no-nonsense in terms of pretending what they are.  The sect camp is religious and I'm not to interested in that.  I know they are the only camp with a hybrid mage/melee called Templar.  The new camp is OK, but I'm not sure about the blowing up of the ore.  I also don't really like the idea of being a mage in these games.  Even the Fire and Water mages give me this religious vibe.  So far I've gone with 1/2 handed weapons and strength.  I may train lockpicking a bit, but so far I have plenty of ore from locking picking chests without any training.

My advice to new players is to skip training how to harvest animal parts unless you want to roleplay a hunter.  I'm not sure if acrobatics was worth training or not, but it does have a funny animation.  10 points was a hefty price tag though.  All you do is jump a lot farther, but I haven't seen a use for that yet.  Strength and 1 handed are pretty useful early in the game.  Strength increases your damage output with melee weapons.  Dexterity increases the range you can hit accurately with bows.  I've read some people did well with bows, but if you are going to pick up magic later in the game it's not as useful.  If you are going the mage route you don't want to waste too many points.  They need points to learn six different circles of magic and also to increase their magic points used to fuel their rune magic.  It's best to just invest in 1 handed and strength early if you are going the mage route.  Of course, you should do what is fun for you.

One final note is that the head Guru has two women with him that appears to be slaves.  That seems a bit stupid for a group that is supposed to be spiritual.  I can understand the old and new camp being this way, but not the sect camp.  To me, the sect camp seems like they are good and peaceful (especially the more advanced ones), but it's just a disguise.  Eventually their true nature comes out.
