No offense to Bill Murphy, but it like he just jumped in without any information on what can be done IMO. There are mini quests in the beta. They are treasure hunting quests given from the guy with gold fingers in a tent on the outpost. Other then that, for beta at least, its best to do in a group. I PUG'ed it and it didnt get me down.
We had a blast shooting ourselves out of canons onto the island (Yes you can blast your mates out the canons).
Sailing through a storm that was ripping holes in the hull of ship from the pounding waves and having to repair them while using buckets to bale water out.
Going after another crews ship and then realizing we didnt load the canons first. We lost.
Getting completly drunk on the in-game grog on the ship that caused half the crew to fall off the ship while it was sailing.
Playing the various instruments in sync with each other. Then getting drunk while playing and the instruments were played off key and missed notes.
Fighting off sharks as we we jumped off the ship to gather drifting supplies.
Here's a list of stuff that will be in the full release that is not in the beta.

like i said ... 0 progression beside having REP
its a fun game .. but for how long, need lvl/prestige/crafting a real mmo huge world... this is some destiny server shit whit no gear
The game is fine just the way it is and most content is not even in yet. I am so glad this game is totally different from anything else out. I don't know if this is a mmo or not but what this genre needs are games that are different.
I had a blast and cant wait to get home and dive back in. Its been awhile since a game had me thinking about it when I was not playing. I just wish it had a chat so I could type and talk. That is my only complaint so far.
This isn't even a rhetorical question. Seriously, why do a beta with only some of the features and not all the features? I understand if some features are bugged and not fully functioning but I don't get that impression. I am actually trying to understand the rationale behind it since i'm not in the software field at all.

There is something about this game that makes me think it should have launched as a $40 dollar title. I can see it been fun with friends but thats it. I'll see how it fares a year after launch and decide if its worth jumping in. MS game pass is appealing to check games out but its not for me.
I finally got in after downloading xbox app and joining, Xbox insider club, this was a pain in the ass and I hope Microsoft fixes or changes it before launch. I liked the game so far and hope they come out with charcter creation system. being a retired navy chief who spent 15 yrs on sea duty on Destroyers the ocean system is alittle to rough but looks great and it did remind me of being underway. In carribean area the Sea's are almost always clamer then what you see in game. I Like It

theres no progression at all beside rep.... game is fun for 1 week
this is sad
To be fair, they say the bulk of content isn’t in Alpha or Beta. We will see if that’s true.
I certainly hope so.
It's been fun running around with a 2-person or 4-person crew, getting into mischief... hunting for treasure (the missions) I can see becoming old fast...
However, general hijnks and true pirating (attacking other players to steal their treasure) is definitely fun.
Hunting down and boarding an enemy ship after punching it full of holes, very fun.
I don't think this video really captured the game as I have seen in other videos. This video gives the impression there is nothing to do. Other videos I have seen show off a lot more to do. I have not played the game but I am interested....but not based upon this video shown here.
if you can launch it, it's great lol. Still "too early" to play!
What do you mean by "if you can launch it"? I ask only because I had purchased another Microsoft Studios game that worked great for me for exactly 3 weeks and now I can't launch it.
Played the last round with a group of buddies. I really do enjoy the game, the pvp is a blast. That said ... there isn't a carrot for this game, the content is incredibly light. The above list fluffs it a bit to seem large .. but it's not. ( Hell the "Content" video shows everything available) After a good six hour session ... you've done it all. After that it's a simple rinse repeat with no real meaningful progression. They have had enough feedback to address this .. but sadly they won't, they are being pushed to release it. I hate to cry doom here but it's going to be a ghost town after a week or two. That's not even getting into my biggest gripe - the Microsoft store and Xbox Live games platform. Please ... Microsoft, just stop trying, your platform is horrid.
I know this is pretty negative ... that stems from the massive potential this game has, it just needs more time and content. ( I'd get over the Microsoft platform if they added real progression) I'd love to love the game ... it's got the roots, just not enough content for the purchase.
I think they have a good frame work for something that can become a great game that people will play for years to come. It's just a matter if Rage will do what is necessary to take this game to the next level that will lead to it being played as much as say PUBG or OverWatch or StarCraft <<< games that have a huge following and are played by millions. If they can keep adding new and fun content there is no reason this game won't survive the game locust. Personally I like the game, but they really need to address combat, and how people respawn during combat. There needs to be a way for players to hoist a flag on an enemy ship that stops them from being able to respawn at the ship when they die. I'd like to see new NPC foes as well. Maybe Pirate Hunters, Ghost Captains(crews), that you must defeat.
Fully customizable character creation. Same for ships...need to be able to really be able to cosmetically be able to upgrade our ships. Create personalized sails, flags, pennants - the works!
And they need to add Parrots and Monkeys as pets. I've always loved pirate games and this one is fun to play - but it definitely needs more.
Beta to be sure. To be fair, I was a little disappointed. It shines in a group. Solo is simply frustrating given the control scheme for sailing (I really need to go below decks to see a map?) The world just doesn't feel alive but that may change at launch. Combat doesn't really get it done for me either. I cancelled my pre-order but will pick it up again with Microsoft;s Game Pass since it will be included.
Played this a lot. . some group. . some solo. . had a lot of fun both ways but there needs to be a lot more to the game.
Best time was: on island that was hard to get into. . solo
leaving with two treasure chests. See a ship coming but had set mine up for a quick escape.
in trying to escape I am doing a hard left when I get knocked off my boat by a cannon shot. They chase my boat around in a circle thinking I am still on it. I almost climb back on when it starts to sink so I wait and hop on the trailing ship. It turns out there are two people on board. I start the fight and jump off just before dying.
I manage to grab a hold of the ladder and eat bananas on the way back to port. Just when they are about to dock (busy with sails and anchor) I jump on. . grab their chest and jump in the water with the sharks and drop the chest. LOSE - LOSE ! Great fun though.
The question is how long with those few mechanics be fun.
Other best time (social). join a crew of 4. . turns out the other 3 are friends and didn't want a fourth. . the vote to lock me in the brig.
Instead of quiting I start drinking and playing the grind organ in between vomiting etc. Eventually one of them joins me in a duet and let me out while the other two are on the island getting treasure. This is when we get attacked and I die first and never get to find out what happened.
I found myself wanting to play again and again. I just enjoyed the sailing and following the clues to treasure. For how long I don't know. Maybe this is why the beta was short?
I should also add that I had several successful voyages with random people on a 4 man team. I would like to see 6 maybe.

Beta are not used to test servers and content? Well, I think so. As that one was in beta. So, I won't trust those devs until I saw what the game has to really offer.

they want to test their servers and don't need full functionality for that. They may want to test with a more limited feature set to make it easier on the servers. If all goes well they can add functionality in future beta weekends and such

I just watched detailed video explaining all that will be in. And honestly its not much more.
Basically we here see one faction that sends you to look for treasure on random islands.
There will be another that sends you to collect items like cannonballs or planks or animals ( like chickens ) and bring them back.
And another that sends you to fight more epic skeleton captains on islands and bring back their skulls.
.... So basically what we miss here is two additional misson variations.
Except of that there will be cosmetics....
And that is about it
