I forget the names, but there are 2 MMO's out there first being Second life I think.. Anyway, they have some mature content. Like avatars walking around naked with all of the oversized body parts and what not...
Whilst I agree to a certain point and do think we are going to start to see more mature themes crop up in the MMO industry, I'm not quite certain there's a place for let's say... grotuitous sexual behavior in mainstream MMO's.
Oh theres no doubt in my mind we're going to see a number of "adult" themed games in the future, which I'm sure will find a niche with the more sexually liberated amongst us and all the power to them. Sexuality is just simply another symptom of the human condition and if games have done anything in their short history, it's mirror that condition, sometimes in obviously exgarerated forms and sometimes, a little closer to home. So long as it isn't done at the expense of anyone, so long as it does not condone the abuse or poor treatment of either gender, race or affiliation then, why not ?
All that being said, I do think mature themes can mean much more then the obviousness of sexual exploits and I for one would love to see some of this in the upcomming crop of online games.
I'd love to see the relationships that you foster with your fellow players atually intergrated into the game much more, I'd love to see real time consequences both positive and negative truly affect me emotionally as the world around me changes, I'd love to see more serious struggles that parallel with my day to day adult life then say simply: "oh noes, I needeth 10 leather plelts, go forth adventurer and killeth thy 1 hundreth puppies so that I may maketh you this rug..uhh... eth !"
To me, and adult themed game means mature emotions, something I feel the current generation is sorely lacking. Give me hopes, give me dreams, give me failures and give me successes, give me sorrows and give me pleasure.
That to me is adult content and as a gamer that is slowly growing of age, that is what I would really love to see happen. But who knows what the future will bring.
The only reasons I would vote yes to an Adult Content game is so basically for the rating. I could care less about all that sexuality stuff, the biggest upgrade it would have in my book is the MA rating.
Why? Because you'll have an obviously mature population who are not going to ruin your gameplay.
At least for me, one of my biggest pet peaves in MMO's is dealing with these immature people. High pitched voices and obscure text are really aggrivating to me, and I hope to most of the average MMO players.
Basically would I'm trying to say is I would like to see a game where I didn't have to worry about getting reported for letting loose a cuss and I wasn't constantly mad at immature players getting there way because creators want to keep the game "family" orientated.
Played: WoW, DAoc, EQ2, Nexus, Vanguard, Ryzom, Auto Assault
Originally posted by mik6 if they added in sexual content in games there would be less players because of children ,and not being able to play the games, im not saying a bit of sexual content is bad but if the game were pay to play there would be lack of players not to mention maybe less money for the game.
The majority of MMORPG players are adults. A game that aims at the majority and is successful will have the numbers needed to sustain it.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
The problem is that regardless of the rating, if the game features sexual content you will see youngsters in there precisely because it does feature that content. It's really very hard to keep them out of the game, and a game with sexual content will attract underage players precisely because it HAS sexual content in the first place.
This is exactly what happened in The Sims Online. TSO was a pretty poor "game", but as it turned out it wasn't bad from the perspective of setting up a virtual community, and there were several "alternative lifestyle" communities that sprung up in the game ... one of them was themed around BDSM relationships, another GLBT relationships and so on, and there were things taking place in these houses and between these players/characters that were very sexual in nature and very graphic (in words). And inevtiably complaints started to flow in from parents of kids who were playing the game (it was "T" rated, with the customary warning that online experiences can vary from the rating) and walking onto BDSM lots and being propositioned by Dominatrixes and so forth. People were concerned about online predators and the like, and with good reason. Even if TSO had been an "M" or "Adult" rated game, there still would be kids there, there still would be the issue of online predators lurking around in search of them, which is a risk very few gaming companies want to run in terms of publicity for their game.
I know that someone already brought this game up, but I think it needs to be looked at in an of itself.
When you first encounter this game, you notice the crappy graphics, the virtual sex and drugs, and the virtual BDSM. What you won't notice at first glance, is how absolutely revolutionary this game is from a pure gameplay standpoint. Let's go down the list.
1) There are no classes, levels, or quests in this game. Characters are built around skills and the game is FFA PvP with pemadeath.
2) Characters grow old and die of old age.
3) Sex is not just a cheap prop; it is an integral part of the game's mechanics.
4) You onle have one character and your new characters are the children / relatives of that charater. Hence the need for sex in the game so that female character can get pregnant (yep, it's in the game).
5) This game is very centered on the interaction between players rather than levels and loot. Having social / political power is more import than having a skillful fighter or theif.
6) Sex is also part of the play mechanics surrounding the ability to influence other characters.

Now, if there are any misconceptions before, i wish to silence them now. What Shae said is 100% right on the money with what i was trying to say earlier. I myself do not want to see sex when i am playing a game... but a seductive character, who is openly sensual, but modest at the same time, is something that should be greeted. I'v seen way too many "I'm so modest i could crap gold " NPC characters, and i want to change that about games... not every NPC has to be either rightously divine, or obviously agenda-oriented evil. There needs to be humanity in NPCs, and they need to be like actors in a play - not machines. I think NPC interaction is one of the most vital parts of a game... and i hope that in the future, something can be done to make them display more feelings than they are now.
Wow everyone, i have definitly gotten a lot of good feedback from this; and excites me to think that i have created a topic with this much attention after arriving so shortly to this forum. Needless to say, cold-shouldering to new people sucks, and i'm glad this forum isn't like that. So far my mind has really been opened up by you all, and its been very refreshing...
Game designers don't make an Adult rated MMORPG because that would alienate over half the market. It's smarter budget-wise to make a game that targets many demographics.
Not to be snide, but... "a seductive character, who is openly sensual, but modest at the same time, is something that should be greeted."
It's hard to greet something that's a living oxymoron.

Games filled with kids saying "You are gh3y....this is g@y....stop being so gay." 100000x times and chats with "OMGWTFBBQS@AUC3 I AM 1337" alienates a lot of adults who make up the majority of the MMORPG market. If you are thinking about porno material when you think about a AO or M rating then that's your fault. It's like saying that non-PG/PG-13 movies are all pornos which we all know is clearly false and misguided.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
What you're suggesting isn't an "Adult" game, it's a normal game but with a special clause stating that people under a certain age aren't allowed to play... because all people under this age are unforgivably annoying...
You realize, of course, that nothing would stop younger players from flooding such a game and purposely displaying the behavior you abhor. No game developer will ever produce a game with such an arbitrary filter. The amount of adults the game industry loses who can't keep their cool in the face of a few immature gamers (not necessarily children- adults have the capacity to be much more offensive) is microscopic compared to the amount of money they'd lose making a game that's effectively a clubhouse with a "No Kids Allowed" sign tacked on it.

Have you ever heard of a tease, Blue couote?
and in regards to your latter post (since i can't quote it as well), you seem to be a bit confused. I'm not talking about making a porno or anything along those lines, and i do not mean to make a normal MMORPG where i don't let kids in. As i stated earlier, if a game DOES have material that adults might find as somethign their kids shouldn't see, it should be up to them. Parents will let videogames continue to babysit their kids, so its not something you can escape.

You realize of course nothing would stop kids from viewing "R" rated movies right ? So should Hollywood stop making "R" rated movies ? Ummmm.....NO because just like a "AO" or "M" rated video games there is a market for such a product. "R" rated movies which are one form of entertainment along with a "AO" or "M" rated MMORPG will have a large adult segment willing to give it a shot if done correctly just like a movie.
So in effect what some people are interested in a "Adult" MMORPG game is one that caters to "Adults" but without being over the top. Yeah I know when you hear the words "Adult" you think prono and mindless violence but thats just you. There are adults that want a game that has content that they can relate with, encountered or pondered about which can't be covered in a candyland MMORPG like WoW. I'd like to see a MMORPG with game content that provokes real thought and brings out a deep questioning of so called "morale values" and examines the debate between good, evil and the grey area covered in between them both with the need for censorship because some soccer mom or some bible thumper might object.
A good example IMHO if I were to relate what I am talking about to something would be how the new version of Battleship Galatica a sci-fi tv show. The new version is much more darker, gritter and much more of a "adult" themed then the old Battleship Galatic tv show which was very light hearted and pretty much a PG rated tv show. The new update series presents and asks some real serious questions about humanity and shows how the characters deal with them as humans with weakness and strengths. It does so in a manner that is not over the top but allows you to relate to things like sex, passion, violence, death, weakness, desire, fear, cowardice, inner strength, jealousy, etc at a real level that does not treat you like a 10 year old. If they were to make a MMORPG game based on the new Battleship Galatica then I'd be playing it ASAP but of course it would recieve a "M" or "AO" rating if it were to remain true to the tv shows topics.
Again as far as kids playing a "AO" or "M" rated MMORPG game goes, well I feel if a kid has a parent buy a "AO" or "M" rated game for them and has them fork over the credit card numbers then really it's the parents fault in this case. If the kid steals the credit card and has someone else buy them the game then those parents have larger issues to deal then their kid playing a "AO" or "M" rated game. A kid stealing and lying to play a game is just the side effect of something that is very wrong with that kid and their home life that has very little to do with video games.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
