Since returning to Guild Wars 2, I have had a lot of fun on the journey to end-game. I’ve really learned a lot about what I enjoy about MMORPGs and what I don’t enjoy while playing this game. I’ve been dabbling into more activities in this game than I have in any other game, period. I’ve enjoyed the majority of my journey so far and in this article, I would like to go over everything so far. Let’s begin, shall we?

I really enjoying playing this game as well. I enjoy the layout and different areas for each class giving a new experience to an extent with each story and area. The one thing I didn't like and this really came up in Heart Of Thorns is trying to find where things are and the issue of dying while trying to find it and being ported back to an area. While I understand the logistics of this and even why its necessary, I still don't like it. In reality, if you think this is nitpicking, you are correct, I really am. I do enjoy this immensely and come back and play it for about 3-4 months out of the year.

I've been trying the past couple of days to get into this game but I guess seeing others running around on mounts and moving a lot of quicker gets me discouraged in a sense. However since I'm new and haven't purchased HoT or PoF I've been deciding if I should buy one of them first. I'm doing my best to keep going however..

I tried and tried to get into this. I thought having a dedicated healer class (Druid) would have made it fun for me. But when I opted for that I noticed that all the other classes could heal themselves fairly well -at their higher levels.

it's one of the best ones out there for sure.. but i do have issues with the class design/combat.
it looks like you've got a lot of choice at first but once you look at endgame stuff and what you want to do you'll most likely find that it is extremely limited in choice even more so than other games.

you'll play what the community has deemed meta or you will play solo.

"I would like to go over everything so far."
    Mmm.. Why?

"What would you change about Guild Wars 2"
Nothing. I love this game, this is my second favorite game (after Atlantica Online) that i played for years. Even that i cannot recommend it to anybody. But i think the base game is amazing. I quit the game because i didnt liked the way they dicided to go with Xpacks. They did stupid updates before, but that was fine. After HoT i couldnt just have fun anymore. Challenges are stupid, I already have enough in D3....And in HoT they started forcing you to do them. >.>
At this point i only wish i quit before i bought HoT.

"what is your most memorable moment in Guild Wars 2?"
Alot of em. Mostly its fun that i have talking and playing with other people. ^ _ ^

I like gw2. The biggest problem I have is that as they have added new weapons and elite specializations, the old ones have gotten outclassed and have not been updated to match the power creep. This makes your viable options smaller with less build variety.

The open world pve is fun. I like the story. Love fractals.

I wish they would update skills and traits and balance more frequently in general.

I really wish they took the GW1 approach with skills and PvP and I think I'd enjoy the game a whole lot more. The great thing about GW1 was the insane amount of builds/combinations due to the sheer number of skills/class combos. GW2 feels a bit limiting with only a few standout meta builds to choose from.

I also don't really like the PvP. What is a guild wars game without, well, guild wars? The GvG and Hall of Heroes PvP from GW1 was amazing and the fact that it didn't make it into the second game baffles me. Nothing was more fun than getting to a high enough place in ranking to get on guild wars TV, competing with the best guilds in the world, coming up with new builds etc.... If GW2 had these features, I'd be all over it.

That said, I think you're spot on with the world/adventuring/questing/music etc... the game itself from a PvE perspective is very well done. Immersive and expansive, the game does a great job of pulling you in. I do appreciate the art style (always have, incredible artists) but the lack of the PvE gear treadmill turns me off progressing through end game PvE.

I really hope they continue to do well though, always like Anet as a company.

I can really relate to this as the only game I ever truly pvp'd in was GW1.  I tried GW2 but something felt off for me. While I wasn't all the good solo, as part of a team, I was competent and did well with my guild.  I have tried PVP in so many games but nothing works for me.

Love this game. It's great for 10 mins. of play or 6 hours. So the content fits well into odd schedules. Around level 75 there's a series of dynamic events that takes you through a couple of zones and the next thing you know, Ding! you've hit 80. Good times.

Two things I'd add. One, more underwater content including associated class, mount, and elites specs. Two, templates like in Rift that allows players to switch pre-made builds along with the appropriate gear and weps.

Honestly, under water elite specs should be their solution to f2p balancing. Make them free elite specs with competitive traits to other elite specs and an additional underwater weapon type per character. That way, free players won't feel underpowered, but the free specs will also feel less appealing than the paid ones that get exciting on-land weapons.

I like the B2P Gem store model. You have a problem with me saying that, well go suck an egg.  I want more b2p MMOs with lots of Events in the world so I can go where I want. If only GW2 was designed around not having levels, then the whole game would feel like being a level 80 does currently.

    Basically six years ago:
I'd just recently set foot in Frostgorge Sound for the first time and a friend whispered to me 'Oh I want to show you something'. So off we ran towards Trionic Lattice. And that's when I saw it; The Claw of Jormag perched in the distance on that small bluff of rock. I was amazed at it's size, that I could see it from so far away and the grandeur of the proceeding battle (albeit now one of the more stale of all world boss battles).

That still sticks in my mind as my first really 'wow' moment in GW2. Though I must admit seeing The Priory for the first time - namely the huge mountain of rock it's built in via the vista nearby - was another great moment.

Now perhaps my greatest wow moment of all was gliding about with updraft gliding for the first time in Verdant Brink, I simply adore that area (I thoroughly enjoy all of Heart of Thorns) but the sheer magnitude of the vertical scope of that area is great. Oh also if you're there up in the canopy at night and dawn approaches (the 5 minute timer begins) it's definitely worth watching the sunrise. Where you fight the Tetrad is my recommendation, but anywhere really works, just get up high!

Okay I'll stop now, I could keep going with my 'wow' moments, GW2 has so many...

i recently switched my pve MMO of choice to GW2 and I am enjoying it immensely too. I actually bought GW1 just to see where all the lore comes from (and to get the rewards from hall of legends). they're both great games. GW2's storytelling through wandering around at your own pace gives you the feel of a story driven MMO without feeling like you're on rails and are just being lead from point A to point B.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I've played this game since pre-launch and while it is one of my go-to MMOs, I can see the flaws in some of the design aspects of the game.

For one it's poorly optimized compared to some of the later MMOs. Get more than 50 players and it runs like dog shit no mater how powerful of a rig you have, (everyone has accepted this and sets their settings to potato in large events to avoid skill lag.)

Two the quests are at times needlessly frustrating and repetitive, in fact Anet has had to nerf some of the quests to bring them in line with the majority of players (when you have to find an exploit to beat something, that's poor design)

Three, their love of platforming. While I'm not terrible at it, it has literally kept some folks from completing some content on their own (jumping puzzles solo is as intended) and relying on a patient Mess to help them. While that worked back in the day, these days finding that helpful player isn't as easy all the time.

Four, the zones are only fun to go to once and once done I rarely return unless there are world events there.

I'm sure people can add to this list. While the above dosen't keep me from continuing to play, I have found moved on to other games full time until the next expansion.

I would want more ways to progress your character. The mastery system is okay, but it feels pretty shallow as a progression system. It also doesn't take long to finish and when you are done...what now? I love GW2 and have loved it since the start, but the game simply can't ever keep me for long. I have accomplished all the goals I want to accomplish and continue to raid weekly, but that is all I feel like doing. I have all the legendary armor, weapons, backpack, and accessory. I don't really see the point in playing anymore when it comes to rewards. Also have ascended boxes coming out the ears (Bank gear). Achievements used to be fun, but I got bored of those too. I dunno, maybe the game just isn't for me anymore, but I still enjoy raiding with my friends once a week I suppose. Morale of the story: More progression gives me more to do in the game to keep me around for longer.

I came back to the game toward the end of May after a 4year+ break. Loving it. Bought both expansions, took my time in each. Spent about 1-1.5 months of constant play in HoT to get the full expansion experience, leveling characters, participating in map metas, acquiring map currency to get a lot of the skins. Then went to PoF and did the same. After a few characters there, completed LS4, got the beetle and griffon, and now finishing leveling some characters in PoF while getting back into WvW for night raids with my guild. I think sometime soon, early fall, I'll level from scratch the only class Ive never touched (ranger). Ill take my time through the world and start in zones Ive never really been to before (ascalon, etc).

Theres so much in this game. Heart of Thorns is probably a top 3 expansion for me across any MMO ive played, including any WoW expansion. The class system with the elite specs is a breath of fresh air and I hope they continue expanding on it. Same thing with masteries.

My only gripe at the moment is that I hope they bring back some of the wonder of actual exploration, wandering off and finding something interesting. I think the expansions have lost that. The zones are a bit too corridor-like. And with mounts, which are a boon to the game, its difficult to let your self be immersed in the environment. Oh, another gripe is aside from a daily, theres still little reason to consistantly head to Tyria 1-80 zones and just play. If you return to these zones, its for a daily, part of a legendary, etc. Not just to be play and be rewarded.

My only disagreement with the OP is that the classes by default don't lend to the holy trinity. You have to build your character as such. For example, your revenant (first char I leveled when I returned). A DPS herald is amazingly viable in endgame. The single target damage is huge. But, you can also go support/tank which is what Im doing in WvW. You simply have to spec and gear for it. Herald doesnt automatically mean heal/tank/support.

Completely new loot system. I've started to call the game Salvage Wars.

You're just doing everything you're doing so you can salvage thousands of things. That is literally the point of the game.

Pretty much it. Mostly everyday, junk. Maybe once a year I might loot or get as daily reward a BL key. I have stacks and stacks of mats I sell just to convert gold to gems to by a skin, or a node or something I won't care about in a week. This is what end game feels like. Game is feeling almost pointless at this point.

yea yea blame the game but its your decision : what to do with those mats ? u can craft or sell or even help your guild why not.The pont is to play what ever u like and don't bother to much with rewards its only bonus for having a great time if u don't have great time go find some other game simple as that.

And I have, even some of my guild which is one the largest in GW2 [Rise] has started to jump ship to ESO. We all still play GW2, just not as much. It happens in all MMOs though, people find other MMOs to play and only return for expansions.

In most MMORPG communities a lot of people suggest that the end game is just the beginning, with the achievements, guild rewards, crafting and grinding for a better gear.

However, playing GW2 i felt the journey to completing the map 100% is much better than the end-game content. I love exploring and finding new activities. I love this game, i just wish that mmo genre did not have the daily spin offs, daily anything, which makes routine, and routine is a job.

  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441
I feel that GW2s greatest weakness is the dungeon group dynamics, that really should be improved. The 5 players skills don't work as well together as they should.

I suggest you try thief as your second character, it is a totally different experience from the revenant and players who mastered thief tend to do better with the other classes as well since the class forces you to learn how to move and dodge like nothing else.
Also, the thief mechanics means you don't get cooldown on your weapon skills, instead you have to manage your initiative to get out most from your class, it is awesome.

GW2s thief is actually my favorite MMO class and I been playing since M59. But it does depend on the playstyle you prefer.

you'll play what the community has deemed meta or you will play solo.

I can confirm this. The game in its first year was great, but with the expansions they kept adding statistically superior builds that eliminated most other builds, in other words, the 'meta' got a lot more significant.

This was left to fester for years, and still does today, and it created an extremely toxic environment, of which fractals and WvW reign supreme. Hell in WvW people will go as far as literally insult you for joining the map while using certain builds or classes (try bringing a longbow ranger into WvW and count the commentary per hour you receive).

People just got extremely overzealous and forget that it is supposed to be a game.

yup.. i cba to be around people like that so i'd rather just not play the game.
wvw is a cool concept but when the community try to bully anyone out of the map that don't play what they want then they can enjoy empty maps for all i care.

I had fun once, it was terrible.
