What do you even use a publisher for when it comes to gaming? Adverts?

I guess P2W may be a concern now considering MY.com publishes Allods Online which is renowned for it.

    Hopefully not, we’ll see though.

Publisher's generally finance development, and handle marketing and release.

excuse the language but I'm sorry.....what the fuck? This is too early for April Fools.... What next? Trion will publish Pantheon? Since they are gonna be at Gamescom as well with their failures for the most part.

Unless something has drastically changed in the way My.com handles the monetary side of their published games, I'm hopping off this train. They turned everything else into cash-cows.

This is concerning news. seems very clueless by Intrepid, to hand over what could be a massive hit, in Europe, to My.com this is the first time im considering skipping an mmo based on a publisher. I still hope for the best. but i am concerned now.

oh my god... and they have on their main page with the pre-order stuff saying (no pay to win items) then throw my.com as a publisher... name a game that my.com didn't ruin and wanted to milk people out of their money

I guess it all depends on the deal; if my.com puts in money, then they will have a say on the business model. If they only acts as publishers with an agreed fee, then they won't. And seeing as Intrepid does not lack funding, I'm betting on the latter.

i feel BDO vibes, with past experience saying NO PAT TO WIN etc... it just feels like this all over again

If they supposedly had no financial troubles, they'd just self-publish or hold out for another publisher. So its either one of 2 things in reality, they aren't as financially well off as they claim or they are just completely oblivious as to what kind of company my.com is regardless of the "deal." Lets pretend My.com has an amazing deal worked out, that doesn't really matter given their track record which can make or break your game. But feel free to tell me any deals in any regions that My.com have been apart of that have been remotely successful for a year or even 6 months.

I don't like my.com to be honest, but the business model will stay p2p and im pretty sure that my.com gets their part of that. I haven't backed this game, i also will stick to the lowest package when the game realeses until i know more. Im having BDO vibes again. I curious how the devs will react to the communities negative reaction.

"In theory" publishers only charge what developers permit them to.

At least that's the story told about Archeage by Trion apologists for many years now.

Having enough money to develop the game (an assumption) doesn't mean they have the funds to properly market and distribute it worldwide.

I'm just gonna blame it all on the GDPR.

absolutely agree. The GDPR is a bitch and the role of the publisher is completely different from the role of a game developer.

Which got me to thinking. Which publisher would be preferable? Seems like most are universally disliked.

Does anyone know some good EU publishers? The only one I could think of was battlenet for Blizzard, but I don't think they'd publisher their competition.
