Daybreak Game Studio has posted a brief note on the Just Survive site to let its players know that the game will be retired on Wednesday, October 24th. The note says, "The excitement of the game's promise was palpable and its loyal community is still full of ideas for its future. Unfortunately, we are no longer in a position to fulfill its greatness and the current population of the game makes it untenable to sustain".

Now they need to sell the Everquest IP to developers who still care ... (Amazon is a good place).

Man, what a disappointing, directionless, shitshow this ended up being. This was the only part that interested me in the slightest, and it seems like they never had a clear vision before the almost completely abandoned it for H1Z1.

I guess the reference Smedley made to SWG was depressingly on-point...not necessarily with the crafting which he was actually talking about, but with how it ended : (

Remember just prior to the sale of SoE Sony wrote off tens of millions of dollars in the financial results. Basically SoE's games were not generating enough to keep the existing games going and finance the development of new stuff.

This didn't change when DBG took over. Same games, same problems - they get old, people stop playing, marketing to get new players gets harder / more expensive. They will - presumably - have started with a clean balance sheet is big advantage they will have had.

Once an existing game stops "paying its way" however closure is inevitable. DBG will have no intention of going tens of millions into debt.

And the tough part is that closing a game means there are fewer games to pick up the "indirect costs" e.g building rental.

No one should think that this is DBG's fault however. It simply is what it is. SoE was in dire straits when they were taken over.

You mean that game you guys hyped and took an early access round for, then dumped in favor of chasing the BR FOTM dollars, then tried to repackage and resell when the BR wasn't the breakout success you wanted, is being shut down?

    I'm so surprised.

When is Fornite shutting down their pve mode? Since they hardly update it/release news about it.

Has DBG ever actually created a game ? Or are they just "gaming janitors" for what seems to be a steadily shrinking stable of old games past their prime ?

You need to read each week's patch notes since every week there are as many updates for StW as there are for BR. They also just added a whole new biome with quests and so forth and reiterated the development support for the PvE component.

Yeah but people play the PvP half of fornite right?  How many still play h1z1 battle royale?  I don't see any reason fortnite would need to shut the pve part down.  Heck my nephew (he's 7, is in love with all things fortnite atm).  Daybreak or Sony or whoever seems to have missed an opportunity to collect young gamers that are using mom and dad's cells phones.

I buy him a backpack every year for school.  This year he asked for a fortnite one.  It's crazy how video games influence the minds of these young kids.  Its not going away.

    I've got the straight edge.

And anyhow good riddance.  Old games and old developers.  Let's see what the millenials come up with.

Sure, Amazon could make a full loot PvP version of EQ. Yeah, that would be... great?

It so sad that good IPs are just being kept alive on life support and all I expect to see coming from what's left of this garbage company is shutdown notifications from the ever growing elephant graveyard that is Daybreak Games.

Well.. given that Daybreak is like the retirement home of games, it stands to reason they would have a lot of games that pass on.

Daybreak, (formally SOE) has created a few games, most notably, EverQuest.

But from what I understand, Daybreak at this point is mainly playing the role of Caretakers of many older more nitche' games. They are really just a publisher for these games, that often have their own loyal development team or studio, that chose to stay with the game, as it moved to a new publisher. And in cases like this, I would imagine that is was not even Daybreaks decision to shut that part of the game down, but the development team was just not making enough money to pay their own bills.

But that is all just speculation on my part.

Actually Daybreak has not created a single game. Everything was carried over from SOE.

H1Z1 was released (in early access) on steam in January 2015 before SOE was renamed to Daybreak in Febuary 2015.

They canned EQNext, launched landmark and then shut it down, split H1Z1 into two games, and now are shutting down one of them.

Just scroll down to this companies games list on wikipedia...

    It speaks for itself.

The real truth, since i not only bought the game but played it is the huge lack of suport and dvelopment.
DBG found it much easier and simple to aim for the battle Royale idea and ran with ONE map and a VERY limited set of items/gameplay.

Really sad that a dev,at that time was Smedley are selling these games as EARLY ACCESS but in reality were their finished lack of work only afterwards adding in some cosmetic and a few items but mostly just cash shop gaming.
To this day h1z1 looks like maybe 1-2 people have been working on it since day 1 and only sparingly.

DBG to me is not a gaming studio, they are simply a cheap publisher.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I wish DBG would retire along with their berry eating sim - they are joke with zero vision and scammers ala EQNext and Landmark !! Oh and I won't go there (SWG & Vanguard)

A question mark was raised over Daybreak Game studio from its inception, they certainly seem to be living up to that.

DBG will continue as they have been milking thier player base . Sad the everquest ip will disappear eventually. The whispered projects are just that whispers thrown out there to keep the loyal fans of those IPs dumping cash into current games patiently waiting for a new Eq or planetside .

Do you know how many times my friends say stuff like this - and they keep buying.

The reality is - if the game looks appealing, people keep buying regardless of what studio made it.

If Daybreak makes a good game, chances are you will buy just like many others

Pretty sure he was speaking for himself, not your friends.
Same goes for me, as a matter-of-fact. Bought into EQN and H1Z1, both whimpered and died by neglect. Too many good games and better game companies out there to worry about tossing the dice with this one.
