I think it was called eden eternal. One day it was down for a patch or maintenance or something. So I decided to try the game my sister played. The game she played was world or warcraft and my mind was blown.

Neverwinter Nights on AOL. $2 a minute to play, but it was worth it ( until dad found the phone bill ). That would've been around 1992-1993 I guess. Back when I actually liked playing with other people.
$2 a minute? Haha if I was your dad I might have disowned you.
I'll avoid naming it, since I don't think that is the point of this thread as even says not what game it was. But, I think I'm gonna vote reasonably good. I don't think it was the best ever made though. And none of the patches ruined it for me. I'd put it as "okay" since that is what I think of it now. But I did get 2 years out of it and it had actual GM events and I don't think I'd play a game that was just "okay" seeing that many MMOs after I didn't stick long.
And there isn't any game like it still, so can't really vote "dated" though it could be due to its age.
My personal games I think were a lot better (not in just my favorites, but just thought they were better)...two were released a lot later...the 3rd funny enough was older than my first MMO and I still thought it was a lot better in general.
So, why not "the best MMORPG ever made"? Because I don't presume to have an authoritative vantage point when it comes to ranking the entire industry. For me it's the best, but it's not without flaws and I see that and accept it.

Ya know , funny as hell .. My Father helped me and showed me how to set it up so all the charges went to a payphone 3 blocks from house in Philly.. Could play 24/7 no charge ..
Loved it's design but as always i saw room to improve but like all of the mmorpg's ,they never improve, they only make expansions to sell and move forward ignoring the original game. That is not to imply there is nothing done better in these mmorpg's,however for each step forward they take the same backwards or worse,so when i say they don't improve,i am talking about the bigger picture not just 1-2 areas. To this day,i feel my first mmorpg is the best design, most depth,i mean it had to lure me in because i was not a big mmorpg seeker,i preferred fpsr's so to get me aboard the game had to have a really nice design.

Why I'm always confused when people think $15 a month is a bad deal. lol
You might mean $2 per hour or something like that. $2 per minute could let you run up a monthly bill well into the thousands of dollars.
Mine was EQ and even went back to the original game Project 1999 emulator for a good 6 months or so, till a game i was waiting for to come out which i played for like 3 months before getting bored of the new game. Maybe ill go back again maybe not, realy just waiting for crowfall now though. Camalot may be good to delve into too but crowfall my main one im waiting for.
I will say i do miss alot of the aspect of Everyuest had that alot of games these days dont have Some for example is: no instances, Lack of instant travel (Player teleports were the only form (Pre PoK this is where i felt it started going down hill game wise)) Lack of Questlog/Quest paths telling you where to go or what to get it was nice figuring it outwithout being handed to you, No maps at the ready with a push of the button (Made exploration feel more dangerous, i did like the later addition of being able to draw ur own map later on by lines following your character was like an etch and skect) Death penalty (Made the world feel a bit more fearful) No leash lines (When mobs chased you out of there homes or to the guard was fun and made sense than them giving up after 10 meters)
These things may be weird for alot of people since they were what people deems as inconvience but to me it made the world feel a bit more alive than just a game which is what you kinda want from a RPG at times.
Also consolation prize to runescapes gathering system, probaly my absolute favorite system, set resource spots can only carry X amount, and was contested spot, Give me this mining/gathering system in a faction based PvP and i think that would be my absolute favourite game gathering wise.
Asherons Call, I dont know if it was the best ever but to me its still a very good game. and thank god i found a pvt server because i have been enjoying the game from the start all over again and loving every min of it.

hmm are all systems in place ? How active is this server? How is its performance?

right now its pre ToD, the server is actually pretty active for a cancelled game not sure how many accounts or what ever. there is some lag sometimes but what ever its a cancelled game that people are putting work into for free so we can enjoy it. joining a active guild is key there are ones that quest everyday.
