RimWorld is sitting at 97% positive with like 22K votes on Steam. Has anyone played it? I haven't played anything like it before, so I'm not sure I'd enjoy it.
It's a fun game and worth the $35. It's seriously a time vampire. Currently there are 17,777 In-Game who feel the same. It's mostly a management game where you can pause, speed up the daily life of some crash survivors.
You will experience some humorous events as well as some frustrating and sad events. Each NPC has it's own personality and set of traits that keeps things interesting. Sometimes they will strip all their clothes off and run into the wild at the stupidest times, or just randomly start stabbing other party members in which case you gotta put incapacitate them and lock them up till they chill out. There are also roaming tribes and bands of villains that will randomly attack your installations and other events such as wild fires, and packs of angry rabid alpha beavers ect.
it's a survival sims like dwarf fortress. it's super addictive once you get the hang of it. give it a few days and soon you'll have a hard time taking breaks from it. for 30 bucks, it's probably one of the best indie game of the year.
looking back at 2018 so far, we really had some exceptionnal indie games this year : subnautica, celeste, frost punk, pillars of eternity 2, the banner saga 3 and dead cells. and now we can add rimworld to that list.
I'm an avid Rimworld player. If you enjoy the type you'll love it. Dwarf Fortress is really not friendly on it's mechanic and UI - requiring you to first read about how to actually play the game (commands, interface, etc) to after learn how to play the game (it's mechanics).
Does RW have a decent tutorial? Or is it pretty self-explanatory?

I have 90 hours played so far; it has a very high Firefly quotient.

It's a good game. Takes a little while to get the more in depth things figured out like which person to assign to what, but once you do it starts to flow. Been a little bit since I last jumped into a game but if I remember right there were also some pretty decent mods for the game also. I would say give it a go if you like strategy type games.
It's a fantastic game and well worth the time investment. Unless you've played Dwarf Fortress and it's ilk, chances are it'll feel a bit overwhelming at first, but once you understand the systems it can be very rewarding. There's a great modding scene that can provide all sorts of cool features and customizations. I also love the music, very reminiscent of Firefly.
Highly recommend.

I've been waiting for this to release. Now I have to wait and see if GoG gets it. No longer making Steam purchases.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
One thing to be aware of when playing Rimworld. It's not so much about "winning" as it is about creating funny and amazing "story plots." Characters are quite literally some of the most entertaining elements of the game.
And seeing how many ways they can suffer and die:)
wow, ok so I went to look at this, and my god, I can't play games in 2018 that look like 1985, dont care how good the game is
Yes, aesthetic wise the game is quite underwhelming (at best).
For something more pleasing to the eyes I suggest the ones I mentioned above: Oxygen not Inlcluded and Factorio.
As much RimWorld does not take the trophy for most hardcore on its genre (title taken by Dwarf Fortress pretty much forever) - as gameplay depth goes it is leagues ahead anything else (but DF).
There was a story on r/rimworld about how 400 wolves invaded a Siberian town and people were joking how that was something that could really happen in game. The difference is that in Rimworld it would have been more or less randomly generated whereas in Dwarf Fortress each wolf would have been driven across the globe by seasonal changes, instincts, and peculiar life history.

I too try to get something on GoG first, then on Steam if it is the case.
I'll always support GoG for all their effort in making updates for older games on their own and supporting DRM free market.
Recently purchased all Witcher games there, including the recent stand-alone Gwent campaign "Thronebreaker" and I'm having so much fun that I put every other game on hold.
Their writting team is just... godlike.
Yes, I enjoy supporting GoG. Their care of older games have allowed me to buy many I missed out on when they first released. I have yet to play most those older games, but I have them if I ever get in the mood
Steam makes me worry. I have a feeling that they may go the "Games As A Service" (GAAS) route and lock my already purchased games behind a monthly subscription. It may never happen, for I'm sure a lot of legalese would need to be ironed out, but the fact that it could happen is enough for me to be wary.
By the way, did you know GoG is owned/run by CD Projekt Red? Of course GoG has all the Witcher games

Yes i have since it was in its earliest days. I believe i had the most "found useful" review for it in steam at the time too.
It's also one of the first games i bought in steam. I live in a country were pirating is not big deal so i could pirate it but the game is just SO good i decided that i wanted to own it legally and support the devs.
Never thought i'd enjoy it since it's graphically not something special, but oh was i wrong and did it open my eyes to alot of other good games. Like Stardew Valley, Prison Architect etc etc...

Ain't that the truth.
I went to install a power claw on the left hand of a pawn who had the transhumanist trait, and somehow ended up installing it in her left eye... I'm not sure if it was a medical skill error for the surgeon or if I accidentally clicked left eye instead of left hand.
It removed her nose, her jaw, both ears, and both eyes, but she still gained a transhumanist bonus for having a power claw attached to her face.
Well Rimworld is very good base building games, but people might not like the graphics, it's like prison architect only better. basically you are trying to survive by building shelter, gather food, researching and while fending off enemies or monster in the main scenario the goal is to build a ship to take you off the planet.

and thats what makes it so good .. Well Done Sir
I seriously lol'd. I'm putting this game on the "fer sure" list now.
That makes me think of Crusader Kings in the best way. I hadn't really looked much into RimWorld, but I'll have to check it out. I thought the focus on merely creating unique and memorable characters and storylines (instead of "winning") was a streak of genius.
