When the Lord of the Rings Online Legendary server "Anor" launches tomorrow, players will be transported back in time to relive the storied roads of Middle-earth as imagined in the beloved MMO. Standing Stone considers it more than "just vanilla", however, as new classes and races that were not present from the start will be playable and a number of technical improvements made since the initial launch will remain in place for a smoother, more bug free experience.

Although it won't be exactly like a "Classic" experience, I for one am excited to start fresh and go through the earlier content with fresh eyes. It's been so long since people regularly ran the early content that I think a lot of people are interested in doing so for nostalgia purposes. Hopefully their won't be any server issues though!

    Let's see:

    1. It's just a new server running the exact same version as the current live servers, just with a content cap of level 50.
    2. It will have the Cash Shop enabled, including loot boxes.
    3. Low level gear and crafted gear is still horribly imbalanced and broken, including dungeon drops, while loot boxes in the Cash Shop will provide overpowered gear.

And to top it all off, you are forced to pay 15 bucks a month VIP membership to be allowed to play on this server.

I was also super excited for this Legendary Server, but my interest was instantly killed off when I found out what it really was!

I wouldn't have mind paying for VIP membership to play on this server, if they had turned off the Cash Shop completely and took their time fixing the sub 50 gear, dungeon drops and crafting first!

Getting seriously fed up with this double dipping crap! What they are doing now is just utterly lazy and nothing but a quick cash grab, by jumping on the Classic Server hype wagon! /Facepalm

It seems that anyone could get this exact same experience my rolling a new character on any of the existing servers.  This will not be any kind of rollback to prior character skills, as many of the changes to the classes evolved over the years.  For this, they want me to pay them an additional $15 a month?  Sorry, hard pass.

To me it's more about getting the player base to start afresh, consolidate them and give them a "new server" experience.

    Not necessarily a bad thing.

I've never been a believer in "free to play" because I think people should pay for their entertainment and pay those providing that entertainment.

So I subbed up. It could be fun.

    100% agree.

It has nothing to do with "you can already do this on live". On Live servers (and we know this from having played 8 months throughout 2018 with our SoL community, as well as a few stints in 2014 and 2016), no one groups with each other outside of end-game content.

Sure, there's lots of alts running around, but no one wants to group. Why would they when they are simply rushing up another alt to cap?

If you listen to their live streams and pay attention to what Standing Stone Games is doing, the focus of this is on providing an alternate experience for players who prefer GROUPING with other players, and for providing a space where everyone is on an equal playing field as far as levels go, thus inspiring folks to be more community-centric rather than solo-centric.

Yes, the cash shop is still there, but in a very limited form; many boost items are unavailable.

It's still an experiment to some degree buuuut....

I, like many others, will be joining the server. Not just yet; we're busy with another game for our Winter Gaming Session, but as soon as we get past the holidays, our Saga of Lucimia community will be heading en-masse to the server in January to join the fray.

And we are 100% behind this being a VIP experience. Free to play folks already have an ample array of servers to choose from.

Also, I'm 500% in agreeement with @Sovrath on the free to play nonsense.

I am fine having to pay VIP membership for this Legendary server.... IF they left the Cash Shop with loot boxes out of it!

But they don't!  Then it just feels like a ZERO effort quick cash grab to cash in on the current Classic Server hype!

They are literally putting no effort in this at all and rushing out this server as quickly as possible, instead of fixing all the problems in the in lower levels in the game first, before even thinking of launching a progression server!

The problem with the current state of the game and why I eventually left, is that they made all new content extremely grindy and unfun, just to push people to the Cash shop to use boosters and gamble with loot boxes for better gear!
LOTRO has pretty much turned itself into a typical Asian F2P grindfest game with the latest updates.
On top of that, there is just ZERO reason to be a VIP subscriber anymore, as the benefits aren't worth paying 15 bucks a month.
Their current business model just plain sucks and that is why they are struggling.

They just use this Legendary server as an excuse to lure people back and force them to subscribe and then all you get is just a new fresh server of the current state of the game, including the Cash Shop with loot boxes... the whole shebang! Just with content/level lock like a typical progression server.

As that is all it is! A progression server with a 15 bucks/month price tag.

Entire community? LMAO!  Yeah right! The same discussion is taking place on the official forums.

Good luck on this progression server. I give it a month, maybe two and vets will be back to their old servers and rest will be gone again. As when you reach level 50, you'll have nothing to do but crafting useless gear or do Angmar endgame dungeons that drop useless loot!
That is, if you don't get frustrated long before that, questing through the game and get useless rewards and loot drops!

I wonder if you have even tried rolling a new character recently on the current live servers?
I have, as I wanted to start fresh with my son to let him try out this once wonderful game and it was just a crap fest, since all loot drops just don't make any sense anymore nor the low level crafting due to all the stat changes and talent tree changes the game has gone through over the years, without updating the old content to reflect these changes! /shrug

So on this Legendary server you will be stuck for 4 months in old outdated content with gear and loot that doesn't make any sense, unless you pay yourself through it in the cash shop, as the gear from loot boxes is of course up to date!

At this point they are a small company trying to keep their game alive, keep their work alive and keep their jobs.

I'm ok with their monetization because 1, you can just sub and get things and 2, you don't really need the cash shop.

Well, I've never "needed" the cash shop other than getting mithril for outfits or when I can't find a dye on the auction house.

I'd be very fine with them raising the sub ot $20.00 and getting rid of any lootboxes or "whatever" but somehow I doubt people would pay that because "reasons."

Nothing new and every gaming forum has them, but if you just search a little then there is plenty of constructive feedback to be found, like in this topic that contains some constructive feedback about the current issues in LOTRO and how it will negatively impact the Legendary Server, since it will be an exact copy of the current live servers and as such inherit all the current issues and problems.

I know I took the time to post on the official forum (have not posted for years) to say that I would be trying it out.  There was a fairly obvious trend.  old players who quit very long ago and maybe haven't progressed too far anyway are interested in the fresh start.  Existing players who are maxed out don't see the point.

Some existing, I think, will come for the new economy and to race to level cap.  It just depends on the older players who come back staying.  It will be interesting to see.  I subbed for 3 months.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

To this date Lotro is my 3rd most played mmo, of the 42 I've played. Some parts of me would love a return to Middle Earth and to play through the game's updates, which btw I thought were pretty "meh" after Moria. Yet, not having PvMP and having the cash shop included in it's current form are huge deterrents. Therefore, I'd rather just play something new, Fallout 76.

Correct me if I'm wrong. This is not additional $/month, but if you are VIP it is simply an additional server? And if you're paying $15/month, why not pay for 3 months @ $30? Either way, I don't see anything else avail for that price returning hours of entertainment. How do people not see their return on investment from games? The whole F2P model has caused some people to want everything for free. I for one would rather chip in to keep afloat the games I like. I don't see any Devs creating a world for freeloaders...keep dreaming though. I'm glad the freeloading complainers won't be around, the chat will be worth reading.

You are correct.  It is not an additional sub.  Anor will simply be listed as an available server on your launch screen if you are VIP.

My original thinking on this was "meh".  But, I find myself warming up to the idea, particularly of doing some of the group content with people who are not over-leveled or twinked up.

Planning on firing up the flivver and logging on as soon as the server opens at 9:00 PST.
