Atlas came on the scene recently as one of the wildest MMO stories in years. Out of nowhere ARK creators launched their MMO which had pirates, islands, and all kinds of crazy technology for players to battle it out. However the communities are forming up on either side in a warfare that looks similar to EVE Online.

I'm surprised with how many people play this game considering the track record of the developers behind it.

If you click on the story link, a pic comes up of an old, grey-haired, broke down pirate. Like, <Your Grandpa Pirate>. Personally, I would feel bad about fighting him.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Every time I see Atlas articles on this site, there's some nicely rendered picture depicting a vast immersive world.

When I see actual game play it's a bunch of ill-shaped lulz characters running around in an ugly glitched world.

    Which is it?

It is an ugly glitched world. Build a small ship to get off the freeport zone (server), sail to find a good spot for a home (base). This is where the game ends.

You have a hard time finding land or need to 'contest' an existing claim. Then you realize if you want to say, live in the cold areas which are more open (less population) or any other low pop island area, you now have to sail for 1-2 if not more hours on average to gather any missing resources.

Yeah, no thanks, this old man ain't got time for dat! Whom ever thinks with these survival games that doing anything that boring as sailing a ship on open water for hours on end in a video game is fun...nah not worth my time to explain either.

And another thing, why does MMORPG keep reporting on all of these 'survival' games, not one yet has been an MMORPG! WTF!

"They essentially are killing anyone with Western style names on site."
    This is racism.

No that is not racism, that is genocide. Or I should say its a racial bias fueling genocide in a video game.

Honestly as much as everyone wants a good pirate mmo. I think this game could have been much better with a steampunk theme, I mean just think of how many different directions/features you can have with a massive steampunk game . You could still have wooden ships but also so much more air ships, submarines ect... With the pirate theme they are kinda limited on what they can add to the game without breaking the whole pirate theme the game has now.

    Imagine:
"three massive guilds from Germany have launched an all-out war against everyone in Atlas. They essentially are killing anyone with African or Middle Eastern style names on site."

My guess is that there would be another headline if this were the case.

Atlas is to Eve as a unicycle is to a Bugatti. Sure theyre both fully functional as vehicles and you could technically reach your destination using either, if you told someone you wanted a Bugatti and they handed you a unicycle you would be quite perplexed. So too am I perplexed as to how Atlas could be comparable to the behemoth space sim that is Eve.

Now I'm willing to concede that Atlas having a war is reminiscent of Eves many wars throughout its lifetime but theyre hardly similar. I mean Atlas is having a (seemingly racist) war and all but Eve had Wars on scales unheard of in virtual media. I mean in just one battle in Eve players spent an estimated (theoretical, as in game currency was used) $300,000 in a singular 21 hour battle with over 7000 active particpants which permanantly altered the games economy. They hardly seem the same in scope or affect.

I really wanted to like this game I did. They seem to be doing all they can to make this unplayable as a solo player. They advertise 40k players but I highly doubt those numbers will hold, maybe on pve and unofficial servers. I just wonder wht happens when they dont have the player base to be able to afford running all the servers that are stitched together. Does it become a partial atlas when they have to shutdown some of them?

i hate how wars turn in atlas: french vs spanich vs german vs italian vs country etc
it become an active toxic racist place.

compare it to EVE ? no way, no close or far.
eve's corp have the country type, mostly for language and vocal but accept ppl from all others TZ too
i'm playing with australian, french, canadians, russian (etc) in a same alliance, and never encounter 10% of the violent racism of ATLAS.

add it cheaters, exploit etc, i wonder how they can keep this 20k players now, maybe cause it's pirat, maybe caus it's an open place to throw words and vomit on anothers ppl.. dunno

now it's just uninstalled and with no regrets

Atlas has a very... very long way to go to reach any topic with eve. The amount of bugs in this game are outright insane. To think its in this state for just an expansion of there existing game too.

Sorry but they already broke that pirate theme, there are dragons, world of warcraft-esque fire and stone elementals, cyclops that look more like one eyed cave trolls from lord of the rings, stupid looking ship of the damned covered in glowy looking Predator blood, plate armor  etc.

The only thing piratey about this game is some of the weapon and clothing skins (not the plate armor), ships and the its a pirate game thats why most everyone are thieves.

And that port town that was shown in the trailer thats supposed to be representative of what it will look like when players build it? Well it wont look like what is shown if going by what players currently build in game - GIANT stone gates side by side as wall surrounding their bases.

And all the stuff you build gets destroyed when you are offline if you play solo on pvp servers.

There is even a player on my lawless grid that was most likely offline sleeping as your char stays online when you log off who is now handcuffed in some chinese companys base. He was in chat looking for help, I felt bad for the guy.

The streamers are now mostly all on RP servers the numbers will stabilize now I am sure. Official servers are garbage just like they are with ARK. If they ever release the dev kit modders will cause a large spike for a little bit as they create some decent mods that will breath life into the private servers.

But its still a game where to have 'content' you have to destroy things or lose things.
