Originally posted by jonaku -- Dark and Light: massive world, sandbox experience, skill-based, but graphics not as good as SWG, but close. In beta, launching later this month
Supposed to launch 2 years ago. Rescheduled over and over. Final release date was April 27th. Last day rescheduling again. I believe for one more month.
Settlers of Ganareth, the preview, killed the hype, the community, and the customers in under a week.
The only thing that it has incommong with SWG, is the constant streak of promises, unfulfilled expectations, delays, lies, cover ups, and complete mismanagement. Before SoG released, their forums (and others) had 500-1500 people on at any time of day. Now, there are 20-60.
It's also level based, with some completely broken skill tree.
Originally posted by Xeones Eve is pretty a pretty solid contender for the old SWG Imho, but it can be pretty boring at times. So if you try this game follow the tutorial and get used to navigating and other related stuff and join a corp asap that regurly does things together. Specially if you get a couple of friends to play cooperatively then this game comes close to beating pre-cu.
I played EVE for two months last Fall, taking a break from WoW, looking for something new. It was initially cool, and something of a novelty. I liked the sandbox nature of the skill system (no class-based restrictions), the graphics were, well, stunning, and they really captured the vastness (and loneliness) of space. However, after two months, I yearned for ground and grass and trees and water and other living things. Effectively being only a spaceship (or an oil painting) got to me, unfortunately. It's a good game, I think, and I may go back to it at some point and give it another try. (If they added planets you could land on and do things on, it would be a really kick-ass MMO, especially for those with a science fiction hunger.)
I'm trying out Auto Assault right now, and after just a few days of playing, I'm starting to get the same feeling (I'm just a vehicle). I can be a humanoid in a city, but my car and my human can't be in the same place at the same time, apparently. Again, I'm sure it'll turn out to be a decent game, but like EVE, I'm the kind of player that needs an avatar to associate with in my gameplay.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- As ye SOE, so shall ye weep.
After going through a slew of games and betas and whatnot, I'm playing EVE (which, ironically, I played for a 10-day free trial before ever playing SWG) and enjoying it.
I've read some about Pirates of the Burning Sea and it looks good (it's not science fiction, but neither is it fantasy). In fact, it looks better the more I've dug into it. We'll see how it goes (I certainly no longer trust what is said about a game--you can only tell after you dive into it for a bit).
It seems to me MMOs at this time are in flux--the developers just don't know what direction to go in (notice all the different approaches to gaming these days) and, as a result, many companies opt for the safe and very proven EQ/WoW model.
Here's hoping we all get our fix sooner than later--but I won't be holding my breath for anything, unfortunately.

I feel your pain. Im in the exact same boat since I left SWG the day the NGE came out. I have maybe 15 minutes logged for the NGE, and havnt seen the inside of SWG since. I had so many great expierences there, and made so many friends that I actually felt sorrow when I left.
Its a shame what SOE has done to such a great game. Alot of people swear that SOE wants to try and release SWG on Console, but IMHO I think they are (or atleast Were) gearing up for thier plans to realease MMO's as a digital download to overseas countries, and had planned to use SWG to start that endeavor.
But alas, I am in MMO limbo trying to also find a suitable replacement for SWG, and at this moment there seems to be none. I currently play WoW to get my MMO fix, wich is Ironic since it was SOE's desire to compete with WoW that drove so many SWG Refugees straight to Blizzard.
Ive also tried CoH, and CoV wich are the exact same game with the only difference being either youre a good guy or a bad guy. The graphics are great, but it is an incredibly boring grind for me personally. It couldnt even hold my attention long enought to make it past level 20. But I keep up the sub for my 10 year old son to play, so I guess it wasnt a total loss for me.
So good luck to you in you search for a SWG replacement. If you find one, be sure to let us know.

So don't keep your hopes up for that.
