As you know, Guild Wars 2, hasn’t had the best news recently with all the layoffs and restructuring. Along with myself a ton of other people we haven’t given up hope on the game we cherish. ANet has reassured us that development will continue. We have a glimmer of hope in these sad times. When I first read the news, I was heartbroken. These people who I have come to know and see their vision come to life, gone.

Look, just let me return to Cantha. That's all I want from the game. That's all I've ever wanted. Let me explore the Echovald Forest and Jade Sea again.

This they will surely add new expansion to Cantha or new game altogether.

The game can only go UP from here on in since NCSoft's restructuring merely stopped the side projects that ANet was stupidly focusing on and having them all focus on GW2 again.

I think that's an incredibly naive outlook. I wish it were true. However, The layoffs of 143 employees (roughly 35% of the company) are wide reaching and hit every department from sound/music to raids, PvP, and living world. Notable firings include community manager Gaile Gray, one of the masterminds behind the Super Adventure Box, and the developer responsible for open world collections (such as hidden coins, Lion's Arch karka, etc.) Those employees left will suffer a morale hit and will have to reorganize their departments. No doubt more employees are leaving or have left by choice, as is the case with all such mass layoffs.

Moreover, it is also naive to believe that Guild Wars 2 will be their sole focus. They can't survive indefinitely on one 7 year old MMO. They have to diversify, and while the fate of all of their secret projects is unclear (some are canceled but some may still be in development), but it is obvious that they have to develop something, whether that is new or an existing development. I would personally expect a free to play game with a shorter development time (like an ARPG, optimistically, or a mobile game, not optimistically).

"These people who I have come to know and see their vision come to life, gone."

What? I know nothing about the devs, but even when i played GW2 i saw people in chat mentioned that devs that created GW2 already left studio (that was before HoT).

And right before Hot release i met dev in Eotm, he said something incredibly stupid ... "I came to lvlup here" (because Eotm is faster than pve)
"With new update we will make this zone more pvp, like it should be, because its stupid that pve players come here to lvlup" >.>

"I know myself personally I saw Guild Wars 2 grow over a lot of time"
Yes, making base game f2p screams about it.

"I know a lot of people who are waiting for what the future holds for this game content-wise. I don't mind if it’s in smaller increments or in a more considerable space of time."

I remember alot of people asked to make Dead island epidemic single player, and same for Marlvel heroes and Wildstar...
Seriosuly? You really belive its all about players? Its never were, Its only about the devs. Look how much old games are still exist.

"Are you optimistic about what is to come or are you pessimistic?"
    Pragmatic :P

No idea. The only thing I'd see this site report on in regards to this game in ways of updates is just additions to the living story. Outside of that, I have no idea what kind of content was added to the game since the release of the last expansion outside of more mount skins. I highly doubt a new expansion is coming this year since they were putting them out every 2 years. Oh well.

The living story permanently adds new story chapters, features, raids and new zones. It's not just some kind of the temporary event. They added new legendaries, armor sets, weapons and new mounts too. Adding a new mount is a big deal considering how they work. I'm not sure if you've played PoF yet but you'd know that a new mount is not just a new 'skin' if you had.

They've probably added at least another expansion's worth of content through the living story since the Path of Fire launch.

Living story has not added an expansions worth of content im sorry. It's added one raid wing per (which is very low considering the raids aren't near as complex as even a normal difficulty wow raid.) one mastery track which is near useless outside that area save for one perk. And 20 cash shop items.

People like Gray weren't fired per-se, she was among the group that left voluntarily to prevent someone else from leaving. They've also confirmed themselves that the focus on GW2 was quite low since they were focused more on the side-projects.

Also, how in the world is me saying "the game can only go up" be naive? They'll actually focus on the game again fully, where else can the game go from the hole it currently is in?

Although to be fair, all i want is a GW3 with the original skill system [and dual wielding actually using both damn weapons, it's dumb seeing my character have two weapons and only use 1 for the main attacks].

There are more than 250 still working at ANet. GW2 does make money and they are refocusing their work on GW2 rather than future projects. The game launched with just under 300 employees. Calling the coroner on GW2 is very premature. I suspect there is at least one or two expansions left.

Heck GW1 just got a pretty decent update and it is nearly 14 years old. I think GW2 at 6.5 years old still has plenty of time.

Focus on the game might go up, but overall resources spent on the game would likely be consistent or go down. You don't lose over a third of your staff and not feel an overall effect.

Anyway, it's not like that is inherently an awful thing. The content delivery pace for the game since Season 3 has actually been the highest it's ever had, with new maps on a predictable 3-4 month schedule, and new expansions bi-annually. I'm more than happy with that (but we need to go back to Cantha before I die).

I also want a game like Guild Wars 1, but I think that can only ever be delivered through a spiritual successor. ArenaNet (and the industry at large) are moving in a direction of less depth, not more.

My suggestion. If you want a Guild Wars like game, get in touch with Larian studios, the makers of Divinity Original Sin. They are one of the few studios in the industry able and willing to make a game with that kind of depth.

This game was trash to begin with. We all knew it and now we see the backlash. You can fool your customers once but in longterm your fake promises and campaigns will only get you the our middlefinger.

Just to repeat what I said earlier. Guild Wars 1 is a unique entity of a level of depth that most of the modern industry, Arenanet included, is unable to appreciate, much less design. The best we can hope for is a spiritual successor, and I think that the best development candidates for that are Larian (more likely) and Grinding Gear Games (less likely).

Many of the "1/3 of your staff" you're referring to were hired in the last year or so. Prior to that (for much of the game's life) they operated with ~200 or less people. They're back down to that (unfortunately), but the game was doing just fine with that staff count.

Anyway, it's not like that is inherently an awful thing. As much as I'd like a game like GW1 again, it's market even in its hayday was much smaller than GW2's ever has been. I love the GW1 design, but the build system had TOO much going on and it was incredibly difficult to come in and have an effective build for general play, let alone any meta builds. Players should never have to go to an external site like PvX or Metabattle to be able to enjoy the game.

I would like a game that's not afraid to bring racial traits back, especially after GW2 has proven that players will still find ways to discriminate against other players, just based on class + build instead of race + class.

GW2 is a game that went out its way to insure that pvp was completely meaningless, and it is now firmly in the pvp era trying to survive.

    Good luck.
