It seems that Blizzard is taking more seriously the notion of a World of Warcraft level squish than had been previously thought. A new survey is making the rounds asking players how they would feel if the company decided to "squish", or reduce, WoW levels from where it currently stands at 120. Each expansion has added more levels to the cap and developers feel that this is not healthy for the game. Ion Hazzikostas recently alluded to a forthcoming squish with the next expansion.

I'm not even sure how one would go about this. Adding levels is one thing, but reducing them has ramifications for so much gear, content design, and everything. It's almost absurd to think about.

Frankly, levels are arbitrary to begin with, and may actually make games worse, especially MMOs.

    I dislike this idea.

Why not instead make future levels be harder to earn, instead of releasing expansions where people hit the new max in just a week or two?

Sure, why not? And why not bring back the pre-cata talent trees while you're at it?

I think a Gnome Squish would be more useful...

eazy to solve :) at the end of this expac you make the player character die & then rebirth at 10 ish lvl under the lvl squish you want to do :) there is TONS of game that use the rebirth system like one of the most known (ragnarok online) :)

The problem with this would be if it sucks how do you recover from the massive changes you would have to make to put the squish in place?

So he talks about "the most current content" and how "older content isn't meaningful" but asks if it's enough if they shorten that "kind of an empty experience" for players?

Well, i happen to have a better solution to the problem: get rid of the empty experience altogether. Begin to treat the whole game as "the most current content" and keep it relevant no matter how many expansions are released.

After a decade of deep slumber they are finally waking up and acknowledging there's something wrong in the game. I'll be back in Classic and maybe someday i could enjoy the full game once again.

Did it have the desired effect last time it was done? Or the time before that?

The millions of people that were taught to segregate themselves into copies of the same instance (in an "mmo"), will chase the carrot until the next paid reset regardless.

Maybe the customers deserve a subscription squish after 15 years.

Only one thing will make WoW better, listen to your f'ing customers and stop making stupid changes no one wants. They ask questions like this, but even if 99% of players say no they will do it anyway.

The only good thing to come out of the gnomes is the run for breast cancer and mechs. (We need to organize a rocky mountain run of Taurens for Testicular cancer, lost my uncle to it back in February, plus some more community events like that are always good.)

But I think it'd be pretty neat if they did a level squish back to 60 and just made all xpac content relevant. Do what one tamriel did for eso give all gear relevance and benefits you know.

You all do realize that they aren't asking because they care, right? They're asking to gauge the reaction when they announce it at blizzcon later this year as the next expansion's feature.....When you get to a point where you consider a level squish, maybe you shouldn't be running things anymore....Under Ion's benevolence, WoW has already undergone 2 stat squishes. Him and his team lack forethought to keep things running. This is exactly why both BFA and Legion's class 'progression' structure was built around taking things away you already had and give them back to you again in some kind of 'endgame progression' system.

They want to fix the game? Make it difficult again( killing 5 mobs in 1 go is a joke... We are overpowered. I want to feel fear again when i pull 2 mobs ), stop throwing epics every 5 seconds to the players heads, epic isn't epic anymore... it's just a color. Do these 2 things and the game would be miles better then this instant gratification thing.

I don't think a level squish will hurt, but it's far from the main problem with the game.

I'd rather just see a Diablo mmo at this point than have them do cartwheels trying to revive WoW. I don't feel strongly about anything from the WoW IP. I was never invested much in the story and don't think I even particularly like most of the characters.

Having a rep grind to unlock slightly reskinned playable races be a main draw card for an expansion makes me think they don't have much vision for WoW going forward anyway.

Just kill WoW and make WoW 2. Stop putting resources into a dying/outdated game and instead give us the next blockbuster MMORPG.
After Blizzcon and the Diablo Immortal fiasco I don't think they have the people there to deliver anything close to the next blockbuster MMORPG.

They are doing the best thing they could do by releasing WoW Classic.

The topic is interesting because in another thread many posters here expressed their love for level-based content and their dislike for scaling. Removing levels plays right into the argument that their arbitrary nature is just a placebo for the player to feel more powerful.

A couple things Blizzard should consider:
    1. MMO gamers hate to lose things or have them taken away. They haven't figured this out with their on-again off-again relationship with flying and travel so I doubt they'll figure this out.

    2. The numbers are meaningless and they can and have squished on the back end before. It's a better place to do it. Leave the illusion in place.

    3. Leave a 15 year old game alone and build a new one. Quick fiddle fecking around with an old game. Wrap it up, call it good, and move on to a new project. If they can't do that then they're screwed.

I agree it makes sense from a design perspective to make those numbers look reasonable. My guess is that players will hate it and adversely affect the game and it won't accomplish what they hope.

Sounds like a whole lot of work to end up in the same place, just with random extra bugs and frustrations.

Since it won't change how the game plays, it's hard to get excited about it.
