SOE is going for what Microsoft did with X-Box Live.
And if you go read some of Raph's blogs from after NGE, you'll see lots of discussion about pro's and con's of such aproach, as well as general discussion on the topic.
There's more there to read between the lines, so it's no surprise really.
I know rekrul... I beleived it was going to console when the players had the NGE shit on them... 9 professions.. Dumbed down UI... I was commenting on the posts on the SWG forums about how its iompossible and that Sony cant have it for PS3.. They are going so far as to pick apart the press release, blame reuters for being unreliable.. More or less they just cant beleive its going to be playable on PS3... They are even spnning it by saying SOny never lied because you cant buy the game for PS3.. Which sony stated the game will never be made available for PS3... So they spin it as sony never said you couldnt play it using ps3.. I dunno.. Kinda humerous..

Looks like if SWG is going on PS3 then Sony will have to use a WINDOWS Emulator. I noticed a few people in that topics have developed games with C++ to back this up.

My take, from software design POV.
They are developing a brand new, PS3 based MMO engine. This will be based on top of EQ2 and SWG (they are extremly close in design, first step was done with CU). They will also add the EQ classic.
This way, they'll start from scratch, having same frontend for 4 games, reducing their maintainance a lot.
The assets will be transfered from existing games, and the launchpad will update all of them in much the same way it does now, since PS3 will have hard disk.
The internet protocol is standardized anyway among all of their MMOs, the existing launchpad offers centralized billing as well, including forum and messaging integration.
All that remains, is for someone to actually code this client, either from existing codebase, or from scratch. The core is really minimal, especially for what EQ2 and SWG offer in terms of client software.
Breaking the legacy would also allow SWG a rather fresh start, break from perma-death, village, use-xp and all that other crud that is still stored in today's executable.
And withdrawal of all resources from SWG is a clear indication, that they are busy elsewhere. And who knows, does BioWare have experience in coding for PS3?
People arguing that it isn't possible for a PS3 to conecct to launchpad and then access all $OE games. My arguments are,
1: Until $ony has finally settled on a design AND released it no-one will know.
2: I'm certain someone at $ony can work it out, maybe they need to employ some of those "Einstiens" that post on the $WG forums!
3: If that article from Reuters is false with false/inaccurate quotes then $OE would force them to withdraw it and publicly apologise (libel).
4: If the article is true or false then those $ony employees quoted will either be fired or sueing by the end of the month.
5: $medley & CO have always been and always will be full of ****.
6: So now we know what this new combat prototype is all about!
7: Gary Numan told me it was going to happen (I hear his voice in my head everyday!).

Because the client runs on Windows for us doesn't mean it HAS to run on Windows. They could port it to another OS, if they wanted to. They'd just have to maintain extra clients for extra costs. It might not be cost effective to port to "niche" OSes, but it looks like they think it makes sense to do it for their console.
