Come on now, your getting redunkulous . like saying Wizzard of Oz is overblown...

Like I said - unpopular opinion.

Wizard of Oz is never talked about with such fervor.

I've heard so many people talk about Star Wars like they were defending a religion.... never heard anything like that about Wizad of Oz.

So yea Star Wars is overblown - just my opinion
    Blasphemy!

The original in '77 was the start of big budget "B" movies (which sounds like an oxymoron) and was followed 4 years later by Raiders of the Lost Ark as another big budget "B" movie.

Those started the trend that continues to this day (see every summer's movie line-up, all the superhero movies, etc.)

"B" movies as the term was originally used were mostly low-budget adventure films made for the audience to have fun and not take them too seriously. What Lucas did in making them big budget films with top of the line effects was a brand new thing in the early '80s.

They were never meant to be great, just fun.
Exactly, hell even the original supporting cast were laughing the movie off on set. They had no clue how much of a fun ride it would be.

It doesn't take away from the fact that George Lucas butchers dialogue and timing. He got rescued by the main actors. He gets absolutely exposed when he has scenes that rely on actors who aren't in the business of saving writers.

I think part of it is that there are tons of company's specifically and purposefully alienating their customers by getting into politics and pushing political agendas or propaganda.  If you look down on me for not joining your hate cult there is no chance I am going to support you or your company financially.  If Disney wants to go woke, fine - that's their right.  Just don't expect me to see your movies in theatres or pay any money to watch them.  I used to be 100% against pirating movies or games until the hate cult grew too powerful, culty and hateful.  Now I love it.

I really wanted to go to the Star Wars theme park at Disney, but fuck them.  And I think I am pretty fair about how I do it.  Everyone said that ghostbuster movie was garbage.  I recently watched it, didn't see any propaganda or any extremist nonsense, and I thought it was pretty funny, so I bought the full movie.  The guy that plays Thor was hilarious in it.  So was that young SNL lady.  Everyone did good.  It was a good movie.

It was a horrible movie.  The first one wasn't so bad, but the second was nearly unwatchable.  And it certainly had woke themes.  That is the problem with the hate cult - it just ruins everything.  Comedy, scifi, space operas, science, politics, you name it and the hate cult ruined it.  Its impossible to write a good story that tries to please and appease the hate cult.  It can't be done.  The best you can hope for is unintended comedy gold - like with BioWare's cut scenes in Anthem.
And I have a high tolerance for bad.  I watched every season of the 100, and almost every other bad scifi show.  Almost all my favorite games are super low budget indie games.  I watch almost every low budget scifi movie that comes out, and really like most of them.  I live in a world of bad, and until the last handful of years was always considered and always considered myself a leftist.  The hate cult of woke is so poison that it ruins everything and has an unblemished record of being so horrible even I can't watch it.

Disney has gone woke, and it shows in all their products and offerings.  I don't think it will get better until they purge themselves of the poison.   They are doing to Star Wars what woke comedians are doing to comedy - they are going for the applause of cultists over the approval and awe of the IP's actual fans.  Hopefully Disney starts hemorrhaging money so the stock holders force them to start focusing on making good, quality products over the cheers and applause of the hateful few.

Google says EA have exclusive right on star wars till 2023.  So it'll take a while.

Beside, even if they are making a new star wars video game, it most likely wont' be a mmorpg.

I wouldnt expect one anytime soon. I mean, there is a decent chance Disney will want to milk it more and get it in there head for an MMO but the way they have been going lately, do you really want one? I mean, EA would be making it .... and they havent even realized SWTOR is garbage yet so....

Star Wars fans who are genuine cinephiles don't usually claim that Star Wars movies are the best 'movies' ever made (objectionably) or even up there on the list.  The originals were good movies.  The Empire Strikes back was a great piece of cinema.  Rogue One I thought was a good movie but nothing worth drooling over...UNLESS you are a star wars junkie.  Star Wars is one of the greatest 'creations' of all-time FOR ME.  It's not something that resonates with everyone.  It's a world I always wanted to get whisked away to whether on the big screen, a cartoon, video game, or over the course of many pages in a book.

With any such creation there are highs and lows and growing pains as an IP is passed through leadership.  Disney was stupid with star wars and took it for granted probably because Kathleen Kennedy was at the helm pushing her idiotic political agenda and thinking too highly of herself and Star Wars as a cinematic marvel, which as noted above, I don't think it is.  They didn't stay buried in the story, in the lore, and in the marvel of THE UNIVERSE (not the movies).

Honestly I believe Disney realized their mistake (only partially because Kathleen Kennedy is still at the helm).  They are killing the Skywalker Saga and giving the cow a break before they milk it dry.  Bringing in Fiege is a step in the right direction.  But sadly we still have to grin and bear it through Rian Johnson's next mess.  It wait to see how badly Kathleen Kennedy interferes with Fiege.

In the end, it's not cheap or pathetic (except to those who always though it was).  Rather, I'd argue, it's wounded.  I mean read the books.  The Leia Books, Thrawn, and the emporer and Vadar books that have come out since Disney.  Star Wars is still pretty awesome.  Rebels was something really special.  It actually successfully followed up an acclaimed Clone Wars series.  And They are even bringing back Clone Wars for a proper finish.  Star Wars just needs some direction on the big screen.  Did I mention that it shouldn't be from Kathleen Kennedy?

And to add to someone above.  Shame on you, Ziebaa, for disliking Rogue One because there were no Bothans.  WRONG DEATH STAR!

I think people are crazy for thinking he is going to be watching over Star Wars. If anything, anyway, it should go to Dave Filoni.

There is rumor (and hope) that he may actually be being heading up the ladder to a true Disney position overseeing live action movie production at Disney across all it's studios.  Who knows though.  If we see him involved in an upcoming Pixar or princess movie, we'll be more sure.  But none the less, his lending will have impact.  Sure, he isn't taking over Star Wars but getting him to help produce a film could be a great way to lend him to help along Rejwan who is coming in to be the 'Fiege of Star Wars'.

Not while Electronic Arts holds the exclusive rights to Star Wars.

    But imagine if you will...

A Star Wars themed Pillars of Eternity style RPG from Obsidian...

    or

CDProjektRed with a Star Wars RPG.

Electronic Arts is basically killing anything else from ever happening by owning the license.

Yes because it is still a big name brand and that is what businesses aim for.Just look at those super hero games, they are far worse games and still people making them.

MMO,most certainly, almost all the studios/publishers are going MMO because it supports a cash shop.So build a single player game and call it a mmo with a login screen just so you can monetize the game and get more money day by day.

Personally i am really tired the SW brand,i was a bit hyped early days but those KOTOR and other SW games were imno pretty cheap as well.I really hoped SWTOR was going to be special, hear talk of a big budget and seemed a lot of hype around it.However soon i started to hear about the various systems,i knew they were lazy ideas and the game play would be the same.

Really it comes down to WHO is making the game and nobody is taking many risks anymore.

The problem with Star Wars is that Disney didn't simply pick up the story 30 years later like they should have. Instead, they set up a context that invalidated everything the heroes I grew up with accomplished and made it worthless.

What did Han, Leia, Chewie and Luke accomplish by TFA? Nothing? Luke is a tired recluse who is a coward and a shell of his former self. Han is a deadbeat dad who gave up and went back to smuggling.  They re wrote the history of the franchise and really did a major disservice to the original heroes. And now we are seeing Palpatine returning? WTF was the 1st 6 movies for then?

    No thanks, gonna pass.

    Star Wars concluded on Endor.

I am sorry. I try to be polite as much as I can but everything you wrote sounds crazy.

Plus those "hateful few," are alot of people. I mean Star Wars (besides from Solo) make a lot of money. Not only that but Disney raked in the dough this summer. Maybe your just in the minority. Plus as someone who works in Hollywood as a writer I can safely that not as many things as people thing are done for "Woke" reasons.

I am currently in a writers room for an upcoming TV show one character will probably be made black instead of white as in the book. We aren't doing it to check a box but because she is truly right for the role. Now this series is based off an existing IP but nothing big so not enough people will care. They will just watch it not knowing any better.

I have it on good faith however that Disney/Marvel are thinking about making Professor X and Magneto black. Not to be Woke but because  they want to sign these guys to multiple movies over 10 years or more. Hopefully signing them to more movies after. So to do that they don't want to make Magneto a jewish man who was in a concentration camp in WW2. They would have to cast a 80 year old man for that.

So instead they want to make Magneto black and have his character from the times of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King JR. If they do go this way and lets face it they most likely will. People will say Disney is woke but in reality they don't want to worry about an old guy croaking half way through his contract.

    This way they are safe.
Woke truly has become a synonym for ‘choices I don’t agree with,’ its ridiculous. All of a sudden everything is a political choice even when it isn’t, the anti woke movement is just as forced and desperately applied as the actual woke movement.

As for Star Wars, I actually agree with DMKano on that one.

I can't agree with this more. People call it polarization, but it really is just people acting stubborn and stupid. The scary part is we can look back at history and see that this kind of polarization is actually not that uncommon, and what it leads to is actually scary.

It's funny how dangerous the US sounds to everyone else. I mean, we are the God of school shootings, so I understand where it comes from, but really, the US is so large, that there are safe places to live and more dangerous places to live. The dangerous areas in and surrounding Chicago? Yeah, don't go for a walk after midnight.

But the US really has a huge variety of possible experiences depending on where you live.

PC and hatred of PC feed on each other.
I would be worried if we didn't live in America or at least I do. Honestly other from the shootings I feel pretty safe. Def in my neck of the woods.
According to the average newsfeed here in the Netherlands the USA is much more dangerous then our country. If crack, shootings and those gangs don’t get you capitalism will and leave you on the streets, ruined.

Or maybe I should stop binging on the ID channel  ;)

I feel like media and the news make out to be way worse then it is. Def if you live in another country.
I am surprised people even take lamestream media seriously, honestly nobody believes anything the BBC puts out in the UK, we know they are lying. :/

Seems like a bit of a loaded question. Star Wars is still one of the biggest IPs in the world.
In the world?  China does not care for Star Wars very much.

Really the problem with Star Wars games is the exclusive rights EA has to publish them. If Disney was willing to share their IPs a bit more, we might have a chance to get another Star Wars MMO. I mean hell, Lord of the Rings is reasonably far down the list and it is getting a new MMO.

This thread has been on quite the ride so far.  Star Wars Movies.  Disney.  Politics.  And even the original topic, another MMORPG in the Star Wars universe.

Trying to stick to the topic at hand, the Star Wars movies were a throwback to the pulp serials of the 30s and 40s, Disney made a fortune cannibalizing classic Fairy Tales, US politics is stuck in a two party system which cripples governmental effectiveness, and, no, there won't be a new SW MMORPG anytime soon, at least until SWTOR is shuttered, anyway.

Full disclosure.  I'm not a big fan of Star Wars -- too space opera for my tastes.  The original three movies revised the cliffhanger as a movie form, and showed a lot of "classic" SF scenes -- the alien cantina, swamp worlds, desert worlds, jungle worlds and mass weapons.  The actual story (and the acting) was a bit weak, and bordered on parody at times.  I also am not a fan of Star Trek -- too "clean" for a future.  Aliens tended to be throw away cultures without any overall significance, and science was a bit much technobabble.  I prefer Babylon 5 for my SF series.  (If that doesn't put me in a small, uncrowded box, I don't know what would).

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

The way the original post was framed, you basically have to buy into the notion that Star Wars is now complete crap in order to answer. Which makes me feel like this thread is less about mmorpgs and more about starting a squabble over Star Wars.
