Are Star Citizen's Backers Actually Deluded?

BabuinixBabuinix Member EpicPosts: 4,462
edited December 2019 in Star Citizen

Star Citizen is the epitome of a divisive title. So what about its loyal backers? What do they actually think about this enormous sci-fi title? Watch this video to find out!

Due to the clickbait tittle I was expecting another hyperbolic hit-piece but came out pleasantly surprised with the rational and level headed report. :)

Aw but I heard we're all a religious cult about throwing money CR :D

He isn't wrong about so many backers actually work or know development if not on games in general software, and it does make sense those are the type of people that do appreciate what SC is doing.

It's sad all the drama-llamas years ago has polarized the discussions so much outside the playerbase that it's beyond hope, but within the community things are different and it's nice to see things like the frequent organization world-wide of the meet-up events (the bar citizens) creating a rather different vibe, not a bad one at that.

People around love tot trash-talk the SC backers, and as it happened here when someone from a neutral standpoint did attend to the actual citizencon expecting to see the sort of things that the community is so accused of, instead finds something else entirely.

Interesting isn't it? I think more people are realizing the gap between what people say on the internet and what it actually is.

If you're spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on in game pixels what else can you call it?

I backed the game in 2012 when they made the original Kickstarter. Game looked to have awesome potential. Looking back though, if I knew how long they'd be taking to develop the game, I would have held off.

Most whales in video games aren't wealthy. That's why its a problem. It's predatory towards lower incomes just like gambling, nicotine, drugs.

This is mostly on mobile games, because mobile games target a really extensive demographic and cash in hugely on gambling & addiction (even causing stress on a player increases sales) by players on levels really unseen on the standard PC game monetization.

PC devs do try to kick in the aggressive monetization methods mobile standardized but there is a large amount of resistance fighting those corps off.

How long are the backers going to wait for a finished game? 10 years, 15 years, 20 years?

There people within the gaming community that are EASILY appeased by shallow ideas. Some only need to dual wield, some like to play connect the dots, some like easy game play, some just like to play with others online or be a part of a guild. The list goes on and on,imo too many gamer's are giving in too easily, just accepting mediocre game design and handing over their money quickly and easily.

As for SC,you get the foolish spenders, those who do not care if the game means anything, they want to buy and collect ships.it is no different than the young kids playing Wizard 101 who want several homes and to gather inside and horse around and don't really care about the game at all.

This is why the gaming market has become an EASY target for developers, there are tons of easy sells to be made to people who would never critique a game or even care if it is good or not, give me something to buy and i'm good to go.

Think i am wrong? Why do you think cash shop games are making millions of dollars, way more than subscription games ever did, people are VERY foolish with their money.

I'll have to see if I can find an article about SC whales I read once.  One guy had a family and paid for SC by working a second job he said.  Another guy had gotten together with friends at his job, formed an org., and everyone chipped in to buy the ships through a credit card.

There was one guy who had posted pics of the private jet he had just bought so.... whales are probably a mixture across the board.

People paying hundreds / thousands for ships. This is like, peak p2w game. Also yes, MTX whales are not just wealthy people. Most people who are whales are actually not wealthy.

I think you should watch the Jimquistion episode on MTX and the people who spend money on them. A lot of research is done on his end. He even went so far as to contact people or they contacted him. He did such good research the UK asked his opinion on lootboxes.

His research shows that it is in fact predatory to people who can't afford it and that AAA buisnesses do that for a reason

There are several situations that apply to the end result.

The most common I find when people talked whales because they spent thousands on a game, yet did it over long periods of time. If you kept your WoW sub and bought all expansions you end up having spent thousands of dollars on that one game until now just with that.

I would have to say most people like that fall on the cumulative spending over the time leading to large numbers, even though what you would spend at one go is easily affordable to you. Eg max I spent on an MMO was around 700$, but over the course of 3 years, but on a monthly basis I think around 10-15$, it's overall agreed to be a whale you'd have to pump up over 100$ so I think this concept is mixed up.

Thing is though I check it out during the trials, and nothing seems to change except their concept list. Their is basically the concept of a game there so far, not much more. Not too different from a lot of games on Steam stuck in EA for years. People unknowingly back the game thinking it will launch within a year with everything that is in concept, but nope. Makes  me wonder how many folks who backed it quietly walked away and considered it a loss.

Oh this topic again, I guess it has been a couple of days.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

or times have changed and with the introduction of MTX and lootboxes we can't look at  it the same way as we did in the past.

Not only that but your judging it from your perspective. The sad fact is that lootboxes in particular are getting more and more people into gambling or relapsing people who had a gambling problem. I am not saying that all people are pumping $500 every payday into a game. Those people do exist though and tere are videos or articles you can find online that go into detail about how AAA devs target those people who spend $500 a payday. Itt's not even all guess work. There was an event where a video game publisher went and talked to other publishers about how MTX and lootboxes can make you money and how to do it.
I mean I do agree we'd have to exclude the heavy takes on gambling with loot boxes that added variables that caused the group of people who can afford such less to be more likely to pay; excluding that we are likely to find a differing reality on this.
