I've had an interesting love/hate relationship with the latest Lord of the Rings Online expansion. I'm really finding that the story telling in LotRO is feeling aged, and the constant fetch quests are grinding on me. However, the way the team has designed the titular settlement in the expansion has me excited to explore even more once again.

    Main issue with this game is that no new players want to buy several expansions along with the base game, and then have to buy a sub just to have access to all of the quests.

    I've been playing LoTRO lately and enjoying it, but I do completely agree here. I can understand purchasing the latest expansion, but having to purchase all the old ones and quest packs is way too much. The problem is that Lotro has a cult following who does purchase those things.

    I think I am lacking Morodor and the lastest... and I have 0 of the quest packs. Have had the game since beta. Just don't have the will to play when half the content is not there.

    Don't forget the inventory space and mount training too. There's a huge cost of entry to fully experience LOTRO, which is a shame because I think many folks would enjoy the chill atmosphere. It's one of the MMOs you can log onto after a long day and actually relax in.

    Lotro is a great delve into middle earth but if I didn't have a lifetime VIP account there's no way I'd keep up with their horseshit sub/payment model

    I tired to get back into it after a several year break. It would take dozens of hours of grinding plus buying several xpacs to catch up. Instead I bought all of Elder Scrolls Online for less.

    "I've had moments where I've just been absolutely bored to tears playing the content, times where I've been frustrated by the story itself and its presentation." That describes how I have felt regarding the whole game over the years.... and I haven't even played Minas Morgul yet. lol

    Now don't laugh but one of the tags that Steam has for LotR is ....... "survival" .

    At first I couldn't see it. Then I understood:

    - surviving the grind;
    - coming to terms with the revenue system;
    - SSG surviving (general decline, New World, future TV tie in etc.)

    Then it made sense.

    And of late I haven't.

    You don't need all the expansions at once, you can buy them as you go and each one gives a good bit of content, and the sub is cheap.

    Some mmos, older, have it where the latest expansion includes most of the older content, usually just not the latest release, but LotRO's approach of having to buy all previous released content & a subscription does place it behind a steeper cost curve compared to most mmos nowadays.

    god, gamers are so f'ing cheap.

    To buy all this stuff is a pittance. And they don't even have to buy it at once. They can just buy them as they go.

    cult following? It's just paying a modicum of money to access what is essentially a very good mmorpg.

    I don't think the new one will be an mmorpg. Some say that it will most likely be more along the lines of a coop or some such thing.

    Who knows, maybe it will be more in line with Guild Wars (the first one) which wouldn't be a bad thing.

    I looked at the LOTRO online store, and if I'm not mistaken, the cost to just get caught up on all the expansions is $170.  You gotta compare the total price of entry to other games on the market this old.  Based on those terms, the cost is ridiculous.  I can't help but wonder how many new players are scared away once they realize how much they'd end up spending.

    I tried going back to my level 75 hunter a few weeks ago.  The main reason I quit again after a few days was the daunting concept of grinding through 55 more levels completely alone.

    Not sure why you all cry about prices where you can easily get the "quad pack" for 17$. CheapPunk offers that: https://cheappunk.com/collections/lord-of-the-rings-online

    And no, this isn't some scam site, I recommended this site to a lot of ppl and they already have everything from the sales. No one has ever been scammed, or robbed. Also read the reviews. The guy selling all the the stuff on the site is a streamer.

    I doubt the number of them would be too high, but perhaps I'm wrong about that - never could grasp this "i wanna everything, and NOW" new gamer attitude.

    As Sovrath and skeaser pointed out correctly, a new player (at least in a more sane world) shouldn't even care about the stuff on the Market, just hop in and start to play for free.
    Who knows maybe s/he won't like it at all, and leave before reaching level 30...

    In case said new player likes the game so far, it's time to subscribe at that point - sure, with enough time and a patience of Buddha you can get everything in the game for absolutely free, but even for the most free spririts it's recommended to subscribe at least for a month, it gives a ton of lasting benefits.

    And only after that, a month later and IF they still like the game, is the time to start posting complaints about expansion prices :)
    (Quad-pack is cheap though, which can push that timeframe with 1-2 more months)

    About cultist buying all, I still haven't got Morgul, and only bought the base Mordor (while I always got the Legendary packs before), since -as I voiced it numerous times- naming its overpriced largest bundle "for the ultimate fans" was a spit in the face of the actual fans. And many players share that feeling, it's a fact there was a noticeable slide in monetization, to the worse, at around Mordor.
    But that doesn't affect new players the slightest, or any current players below level 110 actually. A new player won't reach that part of the game for months - if ever, considering the attention span of the average so-called "new gamer".
    So the constant complaints about the prices are a bit amusing...

    I played this years ago and the mention of Amazon Games creating a new pre-quell MMORPG had me recharged to play this a little bit. Then I remembered how much grinding there was. The storyline was amazing and exploring the world was great..... but the grind was quite a bit.

    The storyline quests were amazing and very well done.

    When I played there was some weird PvP where you could play an Orc and fight people. It left me feeling a lack of excitement once I realized I wouldn't be able to use my self version of Legolas against a bunch of people. lol

    Anyways, glad to see this game is still around after all these years. I won't be playing it again because let's face it, once you leave an MMO you normally never return to it. Ill wait for Amazon Games to make the pre-quell and play that.
