I wonder if they can measure how many people play Fortnite exclusively, versus how many people have added Fortnite to a list of games they play.
Is it a zero sum game, where Fortnite's success has to be at someone else's expense? Or no? Are there, for example, fewer people engaged in WoW PvP because they now do this instead?

Its not uncommon for popular things to seem like crap to grumpy old folks lol.
Lol why because some loathe this game and cant believe this pile of shit is still as popular as it is? Since when did having an opinion mean you're grumpy an old? Lol that's news to me!
Just like that ol' demon rock music! Yeah!
hmmm let's see, since some people have no sense of history repeating itself ... since "since."
An estimable critic writing for National Review, after seeing Presley writhe his way through one of Ed Sullivan’s shows … suggested that future entertainers would have to wrestle with live octopuses in order to entertain a mass American audience. The Beatles don’t in fact do this, but how one wishes they did! And how this one wishes the octopus would win….
The Beatles are not merely awful; I would consider it sacrilegious to say anything less than that they are god awful. They are so unbelievably horribly, so appallingly unmusical, so dogmatically insensitive to the magic of the art that they qualify as crowned heads of anti-music, even as the imposter popes went down in history as “anti-popes.”
from another reviewer, this one's a gem ...
The big question in the music business at the moment is, will the Beatles last? The odds are that, in the words of another era, they’re too hot not to cool down, and a cooled-down Beatle is hard to picture. It is also hard to imagine any other field in which they could apply their talents, and so the odds are that they will fade away, as most adults confidently predict.
But the odds in show business have a way of being broken, and the Beatles have more showmanship than any group in years; they might just think up a new field for themselves. After all, they have done it already.

A person may start out playing one game, and then decide to play two games, with no loss of revenue to game one. The gamer just increases the time and money he/she spends on games.
Or, that gamer may pay less to game one because of time spent in game two.
It just depends on the gamer really.
Oh and btw, this morning I hate bacon and eggs. The fact that I ate eggs did not detract from the pork industry.

All success is at someone else's expense.
A good game brings new players to the genre and to gaming. It takes away some players from its competitors, but it's not a zero sum game where one game's success would always be other game's loss.
But I hate the predatory monetization of games like these. Especially when they aim it at under age kids that spend their parent's money on it. This is bad for gaming in general imo.
And it worries me that so many young kids think it is normal to pay through the nose for CC and gambling in games. Their parents should be more aware of what they are allowing.

I used to get bullied in school for how I looked (clothes, shoes, glasses). This seems like an improvement, criticizing an avatar. But it's a new world I guess that I don't understand.

It has no paywall so f2p gaming scrubs can play it. Then they can bring their rich friends who pay the bills. And never forget all the scrub streamers.
It's strange, because at first glance you can say, "They have to be good to have made so much money".
Yet if you look at literal slot machines, they are considered games, and they aren't particularly good, yet it's common that they make more money than they pay out.
That doesn't mean that games that make a lot of money are necessarily bad either.
Maybe the moral of the story is, nothing means anything, and play what you like?
Or perhaps, the moral is, become a whale, make your favorite game a top earner?
It may not be your type of game, but you cannot deny that it is objectively a very good game. It's very well polished. A good, reasonable cash shop and it's completely free to play.
Saying it's a crap game just because you don't like br's is lame.

Depends on the criteria for good.
I suppose a slot machine is a "game of chance" but if one thinks about it, it's not really a game. It's a vending machine of chance.

I dunno, exploiting the insecurities of pre-teens and teens seems predatory to me, but such practices are widespread and been going on for years.

I guess that's true. But the same could be said for video blackjack or poker I guess?
It's just impossible to identify a good game based on how much money it brings in. Especially these days where people are dropping thousands of dollars on ships that aren't even real in a game that hasn't even released.
I did some promo work in uk shops, There is like a gaming bunker in Curry's and the place was full of 7-12 year kids going crazy for fornite. It's worst than flies being atracted to blue light.
Fortnite is using Psychological statistics to make the game interesting and addictive for kids.
Kids are the easyest prey for microtransactions.
The idea came to mix PUBG and World of Warcraft that can Run on consoles.
90 % of the kids have consoles but they wish they had a PC because of streamers.
Ninja and other trendy young streamers helped Fortnite to gain huge popularity among youngsters.
If you are afraid that real gaming is dying don't worry it's allready dead.
All the games like COD MW and Fallout 76 new Blizzard games and especially Bethesda game are made for cheap consoles because that's where the money is.
A gt 1080 ti card is 20 x faster than a ps4 videocard and you can end up having crappy FPS in fallout 76 with it.
You have to make games with huge limitations for consoles to keep atleast 30 fps and it's inpossible to calibrate it for Pc.
Developers are making games that appeal to kids?!?!?!?! SINCE WHEN WTFF!~?!?!?!@?
Reading through all the comments fully I don't understand the hate for Fortnite. It's F2P and from what I have heard and I can find the game has mostly, if not all, cosmetic MTX. That is better then most.
I mean who cares what people play as long as they are playing games. I am sure we have all enjoyed a game that other would scoff at. I know I have at least 2 with Fallout 76 (I think I put 150+ hours into that game) and Ghost Recon Breakpoint (75+ hours and counting).
I mean there is a lot worse games to put money in and enjoy

Maybe I am just getting old but hearing that people get bullied in school for what your avatar looks like in a video game is so alien to me.
It may be alien but let's remember that children are actually some of the most vicious when it comes to their peers. I'd argue that the cash shop remains predatory due to the fact that it's a game targeting primarily towards children, when children are the most likely to enact social punishments on their classmates for not showing a similar rarity in their possessions. Criticizing an avatar is just an added layer to the bullying pandemic within public schooling because it all ends up the same way, where one kid is ostracized for lacking the fiscal means to have a "rare object," that everybody else has.
Which is also why there's so many stories of children stealing their parents credit cards to buy new skins because unlike going to the closet walmart to buy new shoes, the digital storefront doesn't/can't verify that the owner of the card is indeed the one using it. (Basically, the only way to not have a predatory cash shop is to not have one in a game that is marketed towards under 18 young'uns + not having gambling type practices like lootboxes, which unfortunately every AAA company has decided is the goal post.)
Not sure why I haven't tried this game, I'm not a huge fan of BRs (battle-royale) but since it is F2P (free-to-play), I think it is at least, just not sure why I haven't at least tried it.
I tried AL (Apex Legends) after a couple of days of it's release & played it for a couple of weeks. I enjoyed it somewhat, but I could tell there was some cheating going on & I wasn't progressing at a pace I liked so I just stopped playing it slowly. I know they supposedly have stopped a lot of the cheating in AL since those opening days I just never got back into it.
That is a lot of money lol so congrats to that Fortnite especially for 2 yrs in a row.
