My niece's son first started watching the Youtube gamers when he was about 8 years old. It just fascinated him to watch other people play. It also amazed me when some of the etournaments had more viewers than the Super Bowl!
Isn't it just chalked up to "entertainment?"
Is it any worse than game shows or late night talk shows or reality TV or anything Sports related on TV, or going to a folk show or watching swing dancing competitions or weight lifting competitions or Televising the Highland games or watching people play poker ...
etc, etc.
I think if I had kids who wanted to give some youtuber money I'd say "sure" let me just take it out of your allowance" and see how fast they changed their minds.
Especially because my kids would be doing actual chores for that money. No free rides here.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

That is just so... unamerican! Do they even know that Tom Brady is like the best human being ever?

Entertainment is how they would try and sell me on it, and again good point i never saw any allowance going towards streamers lol. It was a certain age in there where actual chores/allowance (outside basic clean up your mess) had not kicked in just yet.
It was their impression that it was perfectly normal and everyone does it because he/she will starve or some chit like that if watchers don't.
So i'd watch streams with them and some of the donations were extremely large as in 4 figures at times, so lets talk 7 grand castle and a fool and his money, but at least she/he has something (kinda) to show for it.
I mean if someone wants to pay 7k for it then grats to them, enjoy. My biggest concern would be the thought of will the game be around in another year, or two you know.

Guys, I think we were being unreasonable about the costs of owning things in SotA. Check out the "sale" prices on these awesome pieces of pixel property. You can have your own Megalopolis for only $9,000!

You know what's the funniest thing about this whole SotA thing? That some people believed that when the huge (lol) influx of players came in after launch their pixels would go up in value and they'd be able to turn a profit reselling them.
It's almost like they were completely clueless that games in development that cater to the early wallet warriors holds no interest whatsoever for anyone except for those early wallet warriors... maybe one or two of the bored and curious but they won't stick around.

Yeah. If you have money to burn (hopefully that's the case) and wanted to own property in SotA just for fun or bragging rights, that's one thing. But to go into it as an investment...Oof...

Yeah those people literally bought up ALL the land so even if a random player started later like myself and considered buying a property in a town I liked I couldn't unless I dealt directly with those initial land barons through the forums. If I were to impulse buy something which is pretty much most my gaming spending then have to deal with someone who is trying to charge me much MORE with attitude than what I KNOW he/she paid it completely kills the mood. Ever get a call from mom or dad while with someone? It was almost exactly like that.
For this price you can buy a real house in my village, houses go for 5-10k here and in not that bad shape as you would think.
So they have a roof of some kind? ... The cheapest "house" I have ever seen around here is maybe 18k - and then you have to invest at least the same to live there ... probably a lot more than that.

My kids will be working 16 hour days in a factory and forking over their paychecks
I'm usually on the side of 'if people want something like this, and they're willing to pay...let them because it's their money. However, I have to go against my own philosophy. This is greed preying on people who probably have some kind of issues. Shame on you!

More obvious here that in some other games but not rare at all in gaming these days.

Agreeing with many points made above that it was deemed by many as an investment, yep that is 100% true, but not only that they really put on the pressure sales as well, LIMITED LAND get it now before it's gone forever.
It's all part of previous posts i made in my not so in depth reviews, amazing peeps playing, game ran very badly, and it felt totally used up and forgotten coming in as a new player, prices for even the simplest things were not in my toons lifetime ever afford, and vendors were mostly sitting down (meaning no longer maintained/updated by owner) so that added to the depressed feel of the world.

I'm kind of torn because I think they are silly BUT it's a released game that has made it clear they were cash shop driven for years. These folks are getting what they paid for which is different IMHO than buying stuff that only exists as a jpeg in a game that only exists in concept art.
My main concern is more along the lines of how it bleeds into other games that I might want to play someday.

Yeah they did launch something and that's better than most crowdfunded MMOs but I've been harping on for years about how especially the game real state backer perks hurt potential interest from non-backers post launch.
Who wants to start playing an MMO knowing that all the land or the best land is already gone before you even got there?
Backers in COE were delusional thinking that all those pre-bought kingdoms and duchies wouldn't be a huge turn-off for non-backers. It's like they turned off part of their brain and thought they were involved in a normal development process where alpha and closed beta players are but a tiny portion of the eventual population.
That's just not the reality for crowdfunded MMOs with substantial in-game backer benefits. The population you got during your crowdfunding IS your population.
