the engine hasnt changed so i doubt the SSD is required , more a recommendation (always help of course!) faster loading times ...

The new zones look cool but nothing "new" outside RTX .

Running your games off a ssd is a no brainer just like running your OS off one is too. The performance of a ssd is just so much better than that of a hdd.

HDD's are still good for mass storage of pics, video and games you currently are NOT playing since the size of games keep getting bigger and bigger.

I am surprised this hasn't happened sooner.

You'll be fine running with just a HDD. People on the forums have been saying they're still using computers that are years old in the beta and having no issues with not having WoW on a SSD.

Tuor peers at the huge data-shark that will be WoW at 100 GB, "We need a bigger SSD."

I can confirm it does not require it. I have played beta on my standard RPM drive with no problem. Load times are slightly longer, but it is not a requirement that is for sure.

All true...except the part where a game from 2004 requires one.

Except it doesn't "require" one.  These "min and recommended settings" need to be taken with a grain of salt and is just a way for them to say we can't guarantee it will be smooth unless.

I mean I am still using, as I type this post, an old i5-750 and this is a non issue as even I have a couple ssd's in the build along with a hdd for storage.

About the only thing that is a hard requirement in these are if it says windows 10 only as that sometimes means it will not run period on w7 or lower as the game is dx12 only etc etc

I do get your point however that it's a little ironic that this is popping up on an old game like WOW though instead of a game like Horizon Zero Dawn or Cyberpunk2077.
    :)

It's not required, it's part of the recommended specs. That said, you can get SSD's pretty "cheap" these days, and they are really easy to install, though I do understand people may be less inclined to spend the money right now, given the state of the world for many right now.

I bet they will announce some branded Shadowlands SSD from Razer or something soon. Why else announce such drivel.

The game works fine on a hdd.  I highly doubt this will be enforced, considering wow has a large portion of the player base who play on crappy laptops.  Even I only have a 256gb ssd for system on my laptop.  Ssds are really expensive when you start getting higher storage and most people have a limited amount of hi speed sata ports so you can't stack a bunch of cheap 1tbs or something

Actually we don't know how many.

Blizzard stopped sharing the data (and I "wonder" why...).

    You care?

What have you done to complain to Blizzard to get the game improved, get Blizzard to spend some money on the game?

Do you have housing? Can you mod the game, run your own server?
You can't do squat, you play a connect the dots game and if your not asking for a BETTER effort from a developer with a LOT of money, then NO you do NOT care.

Lol? I sub and play the game because I enjoy it. Its a video game, not a political statement. Dont like it, dont play it - but to sit there and say "noone cares" is an asinine comment, its the most popular and played MMORPG on the market and has been since its release. The improvement comes in the form of expansion packs, again, noone forcing you to buy or play it. The irony of people clicking on an article and commenting in this section for a game they supposedly dont care about isnt lost on me either.

For anyone who is curious, when WoW launched in 2004 it had the following minimum specs:

    Windows 98
    800 mhz CPU
    32 mb graphics card
    256 mb RAM
    4 GB hdd space
    56k modem connection

Don't have an SSD and it still works. WoW always had performance issues in certain zones that are still present today.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

  • SwampDragonsSwampDragons Member UncommonPosts: 352
    this is a guess:
But with a SSD you can load textures faster and therefor program your game in a different way.
You can jump between scenes that have totally different sets of graphics faster.

So an SSD requirement could mean less loading screens / faster texture swapping on objects.

Do people still play this game? The sooner it dies the better then Blizzard may actually give us a good game. World of Diablo anyone?

I do, all my games are on my hard drive. My computer is about 5 years old. I will get a bigger SSD when I get a new computer. For now I have had no problems playing them from my hard drive. My SSD is only big enough for my OS.
