So, been reading a lot about people's theories that Marc Jacob is really more about building an engine to sell than an actual game.
I highly doubt CU was all a pretense for making a sellable mmo game engine, that really makes no sense. However, it has been in development for seven years (including two-plus years of "beta").
That is the same amount of time it took to develop ESO, a game that is massive in scope and includes an amazing RvR system among other things. In contrast, CU with its supposedly much smaller scope looks nowhere near release, and I am yet to see it perform reasonably with even a few players on screen, let alone 1000s.
I don't really think that's true at all from what I've seen. If you've played it then that's another thing as you might have first hand experience with issues. But I've looked at all the recent footage and they've done a good job rendering quite a large group on screen with very little slow down.
Now, final game with updated graphics/models? We'll see.
I am not sure what footage you are referring to, but what I have seen does not look promising. You'll have to wait until the NDA lifts or pay them $60 to see for yourself.
I guess I shouldn't be too pessimistic though, it might start shaping up into something decent over the next couple of years.
I mean, I can already play it as they have opened up some of their sessions to lower level backers. I just don't because the last time I tried to install it I found it was a pain in the ass.
Also, to be clear, I'm referring to his latest video where he shows an incredible amount of stuff happening on screen. I am not referring to "a finished game."
Like I said, I played Lineage 2 and participated in some huge castle sieges and it wasn't near as much as he had going on in that latest video.
But again, I'm not referring to finished assets or finished game.
So in that case you should have access to the backers forum right? In there you can see some gameplay videos posted by people who are currently testing the beta and get an idea of progress without having to wrestle with downloading the client.
In terms of "official" gameplay videos, something I find strange is that the latest one on the open version of the CU site is "Pre-Pre Alpha Camelot Unchained Engine gameplay-4" from July 2014. And searching for "gameplay" on their youtube channel the latest relevant video I could find was from 2015.
Looking through the recent updates on the youtube channel, it just seems to be Mark talking. The only exception was the "colossal update" video of January 2020, which showed off the tower defense game they have been working on and had no CU gameplay.
I am wondering what video you are referring to? If you could link it or something that would be great because I actually want to have some hope for this game. And if they do have material like that, I wish they would show it off on their web site or something.

It's a twitch one. If I find it (not great at twitch) I'll link it. He streamed it a bit after he announced that other game so he could show the progress they made on rendering a lot of stuff on screen at once.
Once I find it, if I find it I'll definitely link it.
I suppose I do have access to backers forums. Since I mostly follow Pantheon I've not really considered them.
edit: well, I think it's this video but dammed if I can get it to play.

Oh no worries. And "yeah" there is an issue with youtube! I was starting to think there was something wrong with my internet.
I looked at the backers forums but no videos I can find. Just news and people saying things like "let us pick the handedness of our character" and "why classes?" as well as a myriad of other things.
Also, it's important to note that what he is showing is, in no way, a finished game. They do have a ways to go "if" it can launch.

If you go to "beta 1 general" you will see a few posts marked with a red "video" icon. I think there are more on that forum, but that is just a quick reference if you are interested.

There was something wrong with it. It wouldn't play any videos at all for me - I'd get a black screen with an error message that also said to try later - for about 30 minutes and then it just started working again without me doing anything.

I love me some RoR but it’s not really able to handle that. We drop multiple times in fort battles, have to stare of the floor, turn the settings down, and it’s far less than 1000 players. Aren’t they capped at 500 or so? Still impressive and amazing for a 12 year old game.

Definitely not a cap, in April/May I was in a Reikland siege that went over 600 destro vs 550 Order at peak (zone took 12 hours or so to flip... I was there for about 9 hours)... given, probably 80% were actually at keep vs warcamp and roamers ( you play so you know how it is).
No complaints of lag in chat. And I didn't have any. The game does lag when there are updates and other certain changes that need fixed... but not that day. And not typically during 300 v 300 or less (for some, forts have been a problem for crashes, if you don't turn your settings down... not lag, but weird crashes)
Also, when the youtuber "pew".. something did a video in the spring on the server (500k views)... it got flooded. The Admins increased the capacity from 1500 to 3500... nobody thought that was even possible.
PS - Yes Forts are capped per the rules of Forts, you need an invite per your contribution in the RvR zone. But RvR zones are uncapped.
I'm sure he's always entertained thoughts of selling the engine once the showcase product was completed and I've seen no attempt yet to market it independently.
I do believe it is being used in some fashion to deliver Ragnarok, but info is slim for the project so far.
I seem to recall Mark in either an interview with MOP or in his response comments saying Ragnarok was using a more simplified version of the engine but not in the mood to look it up.
iirc, CSE needed to raise some more investment money for CU, same situation every crowdfunded mmo seems to find itself in every couple of years.
He managed to "secure" approx $10mil new investment money, mostly from himself and his sister. I believe his sister invests in most of his games in a big way, so sounds like she's fairly loaded.
His sister, along with some other investors, added a caveat: CSE must deliver a second, easier-to-make game, using the engine, in order to make some money in the short term and help fund the remainder of CU. Thus, Ragnarok was born. Only money from this new investment is going to fund the new game, all the crowdfunded money they had already raised has stayed with CU.
That means there will now be two teams, building two games, but using the same engine. Whilst some of the work on the engine wont be useful to both games, a lot of it will, so in theory it will speed up overall development of CU. For example, the PvE work they will be doing for Ragnarok will help out when it comes to creating The Depths in CU.
Time will tell whether it works out or not.

I don't know how to interpret your post. You toy with me... please expand.
Just interpret is as "Gdemami does not like your post".
He's in a habit of declaring posts that he dislikes as wrong/false/ridiculous. Normally he can't point out anything wrong in the post, he's just trolling those posts that he does not like.
I meant to reply to this but forgot, Gdemmami is our official troll mascot, he thrives on nonsense but his Lol's will get you from green to blue in no time.
Wtf but yet y’all trolling him knowing that his post was misinterpreted by @vrika
@TwistedSister77, Gdemami Was taking a jab at some of our longtime regulars that can be a bit cynical at times. Not at you or your post
I really don't care what Gdemami's post was about, the OP thought its was worth a considered reply and needed to know what sort of poster he was dealing with.

Yep i had the EXACT same issue and why i said something.I immediately opened with Brave "not that i condone Brave"i would say go for Firefox as a good option but i just happen to have brave because it operates like Chrome.
We should all realize that everything Google/Microsoft/YouTube are all tied together making money off of adverts/cookies.My point being Microsoft and other monopolies are constantly reworking code trying to stop adblockers and further support the advertisers.Twitch just did the same thing, lowered the quality to anyone using adblockers as well would spam them with adverts.
On that video, that was ONE model and TWO animations repeated and if one knows anything about game engines, that lowers the rendering by a LOT.if that was for example 15 different models that are also animated/moving AND several different animations idk let's say 10 different and all going off at different times ,i doubt that video would even play. Then to boot that was looking at PUNY models, puny animations get in close and add in sounds as well, yep i feel like he knows it and is purposely trying to deceive people.
So then in 2020 or LATER when a game like this actually releases,i would want to see animated destruction of surfaces.Geesh i can remember first getting excited about that WAY WAY back with RedFaction showing some early ideas. So over many years, better tech, faster machines,i fully expected to see an IMPROVEMENT on game designs.
Now a serious question, one i have thought about many times, how do people feel about an developer attaining crowd funding AND attaining investors which in hand will have the developer listening and catering to the investor and NOT the backers?

I always find that battle numbers are more like fishermen and the size of the one that got away. There is an actual post from a developer earlier this year where he says the zone performance starts to degrade after around 500 players. (which is still plenty impressive)
On a side note.. one thing that RoR taught me is that more is not necessarily better. I find the fight that have just a few Warbands much more fun than those with hundreds and hundreds of players. I think games with such large battles need to limit the ability to field-rez, otherwise you can just stand on the same wall for hours and hours killing the same enemy over and over.

From a design point more is always better . Even if you do not consider 1000 man sieges. It allows developers to make more immersive and interactive game worlds. Instead of a painted on backgrounds you could make a game world where every thing acts with and reacts to every thing else around it.
But to build that kind of engine I think it would cost a hell of a lot more then what he has fund wise. And what he has show so far while boasting that no one else has done it does not appear to be any better then games already released like Blood of Steel.
Now a serious question, one i have thought about many times, how do people feel about an developer attaining crowd funding AND attaining investors which in hand will have the developer listening and catering to the investor and NOT the backers?
I don't care.
First off, there are always "a lot" of backers. My voice isn't going to have any more weight than any other backer.
Secondly, I'm not giving money so "I" can be heard and for them to make the game that "I" want using solely "my" feedback."
I'm giving money to hopefully get a game that I and many others want. And it's a sliding scale. I thoroughly know that the game released isn't going to be exactly what was pitched at the outset. I know this.
It will most likely, should it release, be in the ballpark of what I and the other backers want.
And if they can get more money from other sources so that my contribution isn't in vain then all the better.
So "I don't care."
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Just to follow-up, Warhammer ROR had 1300 in a single RvR zone in April - Entataine (screen shot'd)... others including devs said they experienced 1400 to 1500 in zone.
Most zones really aren't that physically large by today's standards. You can get from keep to keep in a few minutes.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR

But to build that kind of engine I think it would cost a hell of a lot more then what he has fund wise. And what he has show so far while boasting that no one else has done it does not appear to be any better then games already released like Blood of Steel.

Most zones really aren't that physically large by today's standards. You can get from keep to keep in a few minutes.
That's impressive.
