Pretty sad when this topic is a top news story within the mmorpg community, meaning this shows how dead the genre truly is, you know like this news tidbit should be a little tiny box on the 37th page of a newspaper.
That being said, all i read was the headline, so all i hope for is an EQ3 proper. Maybe this company is looking at actually doing something with the franchise.
You seem to think that news should only be solely about 'games themselves'
This is a major IP that has gone through two sales already, the first to a somewhat, seemingly sketchy, company and now that company is purchased by what looks like another investment company.
That IS news. You might not be interested but I can assure you that games are made by companies and those companies play an important part in what happens to those games.
Yes this is news, page 37 at the bottom news is all, you said it best and why i didn't read the article becasue it was probably this anyway "what looks like another investment company" yahn, was so hoping maybe something better.
I'm all for people discussing it, i mean if you think i have issues with that, that's far from reality, my reality is i just like to play, and talk about games i play is all. I threw in my hope ofc but beyond that, i dunno not much more to say.
I mean something good comes of this i'll be first in line, and until (being positive there) something of interest comes along, wow r/c, swg:l is where i'll be.

Yeah there was a time when far more was going on in the genre and actually back then, this news would have been HUGE i mean COLOSSAL FULL FRONT PAGE news tbh, but i dunno now, meh they got bought out again by another investment firm, whatever, feeling is all.
Not going to say i don't hope they do something with the franchise, but not going to hold my breath either.

Well that's the thing, it feels like it's at a tipping point for this franchise.
Nothing of significance has happened to it and now another sale.
It seems like now is the make it or break it time for Everquest.
Though as Blue said, they very well might use the IP for other types of games, not necessarily mmorpg's or at least not one that isn't mobile.

[...] With that aside, it's still possible they really own SSG just never said so (not on their list of owned studios).
Read the EG7 investor pdf.
"2016: Daybreak acquires
Turbine and Standing
Stone Games, bringing
LOTRO and DDO
onboard, since
contributing with $72m
of bookings and $39m of
Game level EBITDA "
No if, ands, or butts about that, now is there?
Yep, that's why I didn't rule out the possibility, however you do know that's just a presentation for investors, right?
(unless it's Funcom, they were notorious about never telling anything to the players and let them find out stuff on financial reports and investor summaries...)
Like on that slide you quoted, "Daybreak acquires
Turbine and Standing
Stone Games" while in fact Turbine (sans the people formed SSG) stayed at WB, and was later dissolved into WB Games as a subdivision.
(sidenote, earlier the thread Bruce said his hopes for AC, AC2 and Infinite Crisis with this move, not gonna happen for the same reason: those were left at Turbine (and they shut them down...), SSG can't resurrect those titles, regardless of better funding or not)
Similar liberty was taken on the next entry of that very slide, with "Introduces 3 new indie studios", which are the same Daybreak, freshly created spin-off studios for the 3 games.
Indie, right...
Still, even with that hiccup of mentioning Turbine it's possible they owned SSG in the last couple years, and not just published.
Neither party said so over the years, and actually it ain't matter anymore, after this aquisition.
A nice recap from Bree, glad to see she scratched the head on the same things I did...
But regardless of the exaggerations and sugarcoating, the future part of it seem solid (that's how I said it doesn't matter anymore how they operated in the last years), and as a Cryptic fan from the start I believe it's a good move to put Jack the head of SSG, alongside his own tasks with DCUO.
Look at that 82K monthly players for Everquest and 29K for Everquest 2. That is quite astonishing really. For Everquest that is quite a good figure. Mostly on progression servers you think?

Could be progression. My thought is that Everquest, original Everquest, had a lot of people who loved it and made it their home. My guess is that they've made friends over the years and this is their "thing."
Everquest 2 really wasn't received well by a good many Everquest players so no surprise there.

Considering how little we see any actual numbers now a days that was pretty interesting to read.
Very informational link. It's somewhat satisfying to know my rough estimates for EQ1 population wasn't terribly far off. I suspect there's a glut of players I simply don't encounter that play when I'm asleep. (And on the All-Access required servers).
But even the Massively article doesn't touch on the many shuttered games at SOE/Daybreak. Maybe this sale, and the new Swedish Chefs, will be willing to finally resolve what happened to IPs like Matrix Online and the like. We heard quite a few rumors about SOE retaining some unnamed assets when the sale to Daybreak occurred. Maybe EG7 will be somewhat more forthcoming with information about the business.
All in all, that's a refreshing idea. My opinion of EG7 has improved (142)!
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Sweden amoung many country's these days have negative rates (bank)
A lucky break for daybreak since that makes them more intresting to spent their money on then paying for money storage.
Have no clue myself if daybreak is in the black with their numbers but I guess they are or could be after some reorganising. Then Daybreak is just their small positive rate on the money.

I read things like that all the time, all TSW fans hate SWL, eq players hate eq2, yet in eq2 the guild i rocked the server to it's knee's with for 4 years were all EQ vets, i was the anomaly, then yet again in SWL the entire guild that i destroyed the server with were all TSW vets and again i was the anomaly.
I'm not saying it isn't true, just funny for me when i read things like that.
edit: just thinking the guild i got involved with in classic, were all vanilla vets that had been playing private for the last decade, and now i play retail with a little subset of that guild, but not many, the majority are hardened classic/vanilla, it's all they play.

Besides seeing people express their dislike for Everquest 2 and the "few" people I know who were Everquest people who couldn't stand it (though I do know that shouldn't be indicative of everyone) it seems the numbers speak for themselves.
More people play Everquest than Everquest 2.

The numbers are actually terrible considering the revenue each do not generate. Subs are low as is income for the 'charm' of the EQ name. Sad state of things in all their games to be honest. Like they said the only real money maker is DCUO. One more reason you will see them diversify the genres in which their IP's operate.

Yeah kinda obv, one thing though i totally can see where eq would have been the mmorpg of mmorpg's for me, but wasn't there at the start and really my first love was AC2, then SWG, then EQ2 i was head over heels.
Then i tried EQ becasue of the EQ2 guild and yeah, cumbersome, and tbh i could understand why i would have loved it being a swg fan, which was cumbersome af too, but i gave it the time where i dunno EQ2 to me was the bomb compared to eq at that time.
I mean it's not much of a stretch to understand why the only two mmorpg's i play are SWG:L and Wow r/c.
The whole mercenaries and stuff i dunno that's not EQ or EQ2, that's swtor bs.
WoW is more og EQ2 than EQ2 itself is, and SWG:L, they are my homes.

Are MMOs really that profitable? I always thought Daybreak would be barely turning a profit, if at all. The subscription numbers aren't enough to justify hundreds of staff members imo. Don't get me wrong, the EQ franchise is my favourite MMO franchise.
But from an investment perspective, wouldn't it make much more sense to either 1) get a smaller studio and focus on less effort F2P games where the profit margins will be higher; or 2) get a fresh studio with a big upcoming title if you're betting on going for the big jackpot?
I don't think it's a particularly safe investment either. If the portfolio is worth 300M now, you could make the case it will be worth less in 5-10 years. You'd have to then sell below cost. Aren't these investment companies all about buying something cheap and either selling for a lot more, or selling for roughly the same but making profit while holding it?

Honest questions.
I really can't see the Daybreak properties actually gaining value in and of itself. In 10 years, the appeal of this existing portfolio will struggle to be worth $300 million, so that's is probably a losing proposition.
There's some revenue from continuing operation, but the real value in the transaction seems to be the various IPs. Maybe they will try to license out some of the games. Some independent party might even pay piecemeal for the rights to make EQ3 (or 4 or 5) or to resurrect Matrix Online or Free Realms.
EG7 might find it more profitable to break the block that was Daybreak into pieces and profit from aggregate sales. I'd imagine there would be more profit in selling the right to brand independent games with the EQ brand than there will ever be in selling content for EQ1/EQ2 and operating the existing games.
Then again, this could be just an accounting purchase. Companies always need losses to offset profits derived elsewhere. So, this sale might be a tax write-off. Anyone really familiar with Swedish tax laws?
So, how EG7 will leverage this property is anyone's guess.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
I'm still waiting to see Daybreak actually create a new game rather than just supporting games on life support.
Still waiting...
