    I'm having a hard time finding when the term was created.  But it's pretty clear what the genre of ARPGs entails.  I think those older games if released today would not be called ARPGs.
    I don't think it is clear.
    Diablo 1 is not considered an arpg to some purists.
    Genres all start somewhere and it is clear that arpgs started from arcade games like Tower of Druaga, Dragon Slayer and Hydlide and more.  
     
    The problem is that I don't think those games influenced the creation of Diablo.  He wanted to make a Rogue like game using a X-Com style grid.  It was going to be turn based until Blizzard South convinced him to try to convert it to real time combat.

    I guess in the end, Diablo is a just a sub-type of ARPG but many people consider Diablo and it's clones to define the genre.  Even Brevik feels Diablo started the ARPG genre in that interview.

    Diablo 1 is not considered an arpg to some purists.

    The problem is that I don't think those games influenced the creation of Diablo.  He wanted to make a Rogue like game using a X-Com style grid.  It was going to be turn based until Blizzard South convinced him to try to convert it to real time combat.

    There's no question that arcade and console RPGs like Dragon Slayer and Zelda did real time action first but no one back in the '80s were calling them ARPGs or at least I never heard them called that nor saw it in print.

    What the original Diablo did was popularize the game play loop of killing large packs of loot piñatas. I give them credit for defining the genre in gamer pop culture but most of what it did had already been done before.

    Anyhow no one wants diablo 2 again. It was only good then because it's what we had. I have huge good memories of playing it with my high school girlfriend but that's about it. Everything about the game would piss people off now.

    Which Diablo 2 elements would piss people off? I mean, this will be a remake because, don't forget, Diablo 2 had that system where the AI etc were bound to what was visible, hence to the resolution. And I don't believe they reached 1024x768, let alone anything higher.

    So, when they remake this to allow higher resolutions...who knows what else will be redone? I mean, I'd hate to lose Median and other mods, but...I also want a modern D2. Would hate to have to choose.

    Not sure why everyone is bitching here. D2 is one game that deserves a remake, because clearly they can't come up with better ideas. I'm drooling for this.

    There are games that are made for a genre that doesn't yet exist. What happens is a big game comes along that is great enough to spawn a new term, and Diablo 1 was that game, and it's perfectly fine to then retroactively apply that term to past games that loosely fit, but D1 was the one.

    There are games that are made for a genre that doesn't yet exist. What happens is a big game comes along that is great enough to spawn a new term, and Diablo 1 was that game, and it's perfectly fine to then retroactively apply that term to past games that loosely fit, but D1 was the one.
    At this point it's a matter of semantics I guess.  And it's quite possible that Brevik created D1 without ever playing those earlier games of the genre.

    At this point I guess I'll just refer to D1 as a landmark game and genre definer.
