Hello!
i've played a lot of MMORPGs in the last years, but i still can't decide. So, instead of looking for reviews or playing them again, i though that you guys have the best opinions to look for.
My favorite type of mmorpgs are those not based in combat, that offer many things to do in their virtual world but most importantly...mmorpgs where ROLEPLAYING exists. To an important extent at least.
What do you recommend?

I hate to bring this up, but I have to say that the original Star Wars Galaxies (Kettemoor) used to be great for roleplaying and doing many different things besides combat. Not anymore, though.
Everquest II (Antonia Bayle) has a great RP community, but the game still focuses on combat more than anything else.
Seed is a new mmorpg that focuses on roleplaying, and it doesn't even have any combat at all. It has a free 2 week trial.
Thank you for your suggestions Yeah i know, SWG was great before all....the tragedy. Also, EQ2 is the last mmorpg i got addicted to, i may return.
But i don't think Seed is exactly a good mmorpg lol, i think i should've said that. I like roleplaying and social mmorpgs a lot but i played recently the Seed beta and wow...it can be a very boring game.
Hoping for some other answers
yep....
Tymora is correct, SWG Kett was a great RP server.....I only wish they hadn't destroyed that game....ah such potential flushed down the drain.
Old UO was decent for RP on the Catskills shard
I don't know of any other good RP MMOs out there....
BTW Tymora, what guild were you associated with in SWG if I may ask?
you could try 2nd life, its not a combat game, or actually its not rpg, but it does have a huge social part. You should check it out

people roleplay? seriously... i've never met a roleplayer online.
Make a difference!
Dynamic content, well written storyline and character customization make for a great basis of roleplaying games.
Unfortunately most of the MMORPGs seem to be trying to strip the RPG from themselves and just turn themselves into hack and slashes.
Horizons is the only roleplaying community which has impressed me this year, I've yet to try SEED though. The storyline didn't sound too interesting and it sounded like it lacked any action or real conflict. I'll wait for others to pass judgement and tell me its good before I take a look at it.
No other games let you RP and feel immersed, it's always ruined by someone else.
No longer visiting MMORPG.com.
I am a member of The Aldera Sect. I played the Twi'lek bartender at Mockingbirds Night Club, in New Aldera for a long time. Before that I was a freelance bartender at the Dearic Cantina on Talus. Character name was Tymora. I t was never discovered, but I operated as a spy for the Rebellion after taking on jobs for Utherr Sorven of TAS, and then later became on a double agent for the Empire after meeting a Bothan named Ragna.
Ah......good 'ol Ragna Rock. Great RPer....and a class act all the way.
I was leader of the United Pirates, we ran the RP town called Red Skull on Tatooine until the game started to dry up.
Looks like we chewed some of the same dirt there Tymora.
City of Heroes (notice I didn't say City of Villains) - Has a good RP community on Virtue server (and a few other servers). RP in CoV is sketchy, if you latch on to a good CoH RP SG, they usually have a CoV RP sister RP SG you can get involved in

As for Roleplaying, the best communities I have ever been involved in for roleplay were on the Virture Server of CoH.
I have yet to find a fantasy game that people roleplayed in. Well, thats not quite true. I did play in an RP guild in EQ for a while. But the way EQ is set up for grouping, it was really hard. WoW is set up good for roleplaying, but no one does. The lines are drawn and the roles are forced on you.

Ryzom just has too low of a population for good RP in my opinion, and the storyline was inconsistent and too strongly based on PvP events.
Good RP events to me are defined by the early days of AO where you had the contest to clean the Tir moat, or large epic encounters with cyborgs that change the game world.
EVE has some decent RP groups, but I don't like to RP being a ship.
Horizons has a good strong RP server and has good events players can impact to change the game world
Most all these games have free trials though, so give them a try and find out for yourself.
"Ryzom just has too low of a population for good RP in my opinion, and the storyline was inconsistent and too strongly based on PvP events."
What would be the point of RPing with hundreds of people at once anyway? You can get excellent RP in an RP guild of any size in Ryzom.
I think the story is very intriguing. I nitpick things like references to a Golden Age on a planet that has no metals, but I haven't noticed any significant inconsistencies - there's a difference between inconsistency and natural evolution of a storyline, relations between factions/races, etc., and that is a concept that seems to escape the comprehension of some people. Anyway, the story and setting of Ryzom is unique, and dynamic. Players HAVE changed the world of Atys in various ways, and continue to do so. Some examples of this is the increasing independant spirit of the Trykers almost to the point of xenophobia, and the segue of the Elevation Crystals/outpost materials economy from exclusivity among outpost owners to free distribution becoming more common.

Nuff' said.
This whole game is about roleplaying. No experince points, nothing. It's all about feeling in a medieval times.
Oh yeah. And it's free!
Check it out. Names Urilen Quanasuard in game, and on the forums.
If you want good (and free) RP and don't mind doing without MMO graphics, check out some of the MUDs and MUSHes. They are text based, but in many cases that enhances the RP because people have to use their imagination a little more.
There are many RP-heavy communities out there that won't even let you create a character until you submit a background, family history, etc. for your character.
To find some, check out the following directories:

I thought the roleplaying on EQII was weak(I ended up just using Role Playing to make my guild sound interesting and to recruit newbies ) and although I intended on Role Playing in Saga of Ryzom didn't end up joining a RP guild and all the people I was running into were not role playing. I missed out on trying SWG pre-"event" and have really had only the occassional times in games were people made the effort, when they did it was good.
Adellion is trying to put the Role Players interest as its first priority and is the only MMORPG that I know of in development or released that will actually have enforced Role Playing
"and although I intended on Role Playing in Saga of Ryzom didn't end up joining a RP guild and all the people I was running into were not role playing."
There's your problem, join a roleplaying guild.
Names of the major RP guilds, to make it easy:
Order of the Dragonblades
The Samsara
Red Ribbon Army
Evolution

I think they are pretty much all equals on RP possibillities.
Since Roleplaying is made by the players, not by the game.
Sure the game can help a little, but it will always remain just that, help. It all come down to who you find in game. There are good peoples to roleplay with and there are bad everywhere.
That's been said, I think a MODERN mmorpg has a HUGE advantage on roleplaying, because if you get a Red Sox fan in the team, well, it is still not ruining the spirit of the game, he is just annoying, like the gnomes who love cheese! Yup, I think many parallels between gnomes who love cheese and Red Sox fans can be drawn!
So, without as much as an effort to deserve been better to roleplay, games like City of Villains (my favorite) is automatically having the upper hand, at best another game can be equal.

Eve online seemed to be somewhat roleplay heavy also, but that may have been simply do to the fact that the game in general forces some form of roleplay due to the complexity of items (how they work and how to use them), installing items, pvp tactics, and necessity of Corps. In the end it turn out that m ost of the things you end up typing in chat in Eve creates a vibrant roleplay enviroment.
