I for one am glad it's not an upgraded 4k model. The best part of consoles is their simplicity. Buy it once, get a reliable piece of hardware equal to everyone else who got one. Devs will optimize for it for an entire generation, and the console itself will last for longer than an entire generation (longer than any PC I've ever owned) unless you somehow fuck up and damage it.

Mid gen upgrades muddy the waters, get rid of one of the selling points of consoles, and make them more directly comparable to PCs. And consoles should NOT want to be more directly comparable to PCs.

Yeah, but in the case of Nintendo their flagship title (BOTW) still runs 900p30, and the current switch is only $100 less than a PS5 (digital), and the new one will only be $50 cheaper. On top of the lower performance, the switch comes with less storage, and slower WiFi. So you're paying premium prices for the benefit of being able to carry a device that is basically my NVidia Shield tablet from 7 years ago that was only $200.

All of which I am fine with. Because Nintendo's games are among the best in their respective genres.

These old eyes don't see the difference between 900p30 and 4k60. I just know I have a gaming console with good games, a great pro controller, fast loading times, and the ability to sleep mode and quick resume whenever I want. It's convenient.

(Also, good fucking luck getting a PS5 at MSRP, digital or otherwise).

Fair enough, for me Nintendo doesn't have much in the way of exclusives that interest me. That said, I know there's plenty like you who love it based on the success of the brand.

I just bought a Switch 3 months ago and I love it, and seeing this new model makes me happy because this is not an upgrade so I just saved $350.

How did you save $350 if you just bought a switch?  A switch is around $300 so you saved maybe $50...I have a switch and will not be getting the "new" version.   I was expecting a switch with better hardware the announcement is kinda underwhelming

If this new model was a more powerful Switch (which i do want) i would have had to buy it. Now i don't have to.

Granted, to me it's just an upgraded Switch, which makes me feel like my own switch needs upgrading, but comparing console selling trends in the current market feels a bit off base when its nigh impossible to get a PS5 or even a (PC graphics card). If everything were less murky and the market less soiled it might not be too far different but I'd like to think so.

Imo its not even a real upgrade tbh. Specwise the only thing different is the type of screen used, nothing else has changed in the slightest.
Games certainly dont suddenly look like new as they still run at the same resolution, fps etc. etc.
Would say.. just wait it out another year or 2-3 :P

I have a theory on this...

    *dons tin foil hat*

So, I still believe that the DLSS-enabled Switch Pro was the plan. However, as the year has gone on and the semiconductor shortage hasn't eased up, it became abundantly clear that Nintendo wasn't going to be able to acquire large stocks of a new SoC for a revision this year.

However, since they had already inked a deal with Samsung for OLEDs, they had to do something with them. Which is why I believe we have a, OLED Switch at all.

Another interesting thing is that Nvidia announced it was going to be cease X1 chip production this year. Seems like a weird play to use the rest of your chip stock pile maintaining a new, third SKU - at least under normal circumstances.

Maybe. I think the higher spec model was nothing but leakbait.

But have they found a new manufacturer for the drifting joystick switches?

Yes, this was the reason I didn't buy one the last time I considered it. I wanted to wait until they produced one that didn't have this issue.

Same joy cons.  I'm pretty sure that the same company makes all the stick switches on all the major controllers(Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony), so it would be hard getting a new producer.

Can confirm that my playstation controllers drift just as bad as joycons.

These things just feel bad because cheap Joycon replacement controllers aren't as available as those of other controllers. The pro controller is more durable, better, and has low cost options though.

I couldn't believe the ysold 85 million of the useless crap switch so i would assume they will sell a ton ofthese as well. Then people will go out and still spend another few hundred on peripherals to make it actually usable albeit still a crap system.

I am sure their cash grab team were just chomping at the bit to release something because if they sell even 40 million it is a lot of money.

You can't sell what people won't buy. Apparently those multiple millions of purchasers don't agree with your appraisal of what the Switch offers.

They sold 85million units....which makes it a crap item? If the thing is not for you then it is not for you. People like things, get over it.

I completely agree, Nintendo normally has a pretty tight grip on how things are on there platform and most of the games look good for what it is, which allows them to run like anything else. Not a big console gamer as I have a PC that does everything a console does if not more (besides some exclusives). However it is not portable so the switch is a great little device.

Unless you want a little bit more screen and a slightly crisper visual, It's not really for you or me or anyone else that owns a switch. This would be targeting the ones that did not have one and might want the slight upgrade. :) Not much different then cell phones imho.

yupp, dualshock 4 drift gets really bad, which is sad because it's my favorite controller so far. I replaced five dualshock 4 with really bad drifting on both sticks. All of them drifting in the exact same pattern, intensity, and direction which clearly means it is a factory issue.
EDIT: my original PS2 controller is still kicking ass. It is a shame how quality gets this low the more "advanced" technology is supposed to be.

and we still can't create folders or change the theme on the device. Let's not even start with the abysmal online support and phone app for voice chat... lol.
