New World's open beta kicks off today, and the new MMO from Amazon still has me asking questions. While Bradford enjoyed he time in New world in late July during its closed beta, going so far as to say he feels it is one of the most social MMOs to be launching to date in a previous editorial, he does wonder about its longevity, mostly due to its content.

This game has ZERO endgame the PVE / Questing is lackluster. This game is DOA. Only thing that will happen from now is forcing degen streamers in playing this game for hours because daddy twtich says so!

^I'm sure they didn't show everything in the previous betas...

That said, most mmos release with insufficient endgame content. Doubt this one will be any different. The question is, how log will it take them to dish out more content. From the looks of it, they're pretty capable of doing so.

We shall see in a couple weeks/months upon release.

I really enjoy New World. I'm sure they are working on end game PvE content. I'm in no hurry. :)

As I mentioned elsewhere the changes to PvP and the bolted on questing are going to be an albatross around the games neck for years to come. But it will be a success and in that time I see them improving these issues, it will be a long haul though. This is why I don't see myself in the game until next year at the earliest.

Yep, I am with you on this, I've found it better to wait for a spell until I'm sure there is enough released content and that changes are to a minimal level before jumping in any game.

I dont think it will flop. It will cannibalize the other mmos especially eso. I would of preferred they had rethought everything but I guess that was too much of a task for them.

Maybe to an extent since there is open world pvp flag system instead of instanced pvp like ESO. ESO  does have better lore, but time will tell when it comes to ESO.

As with any MMO, there will be two main groups that play New World. There will be those that rush through the content, level as fast as possible, and then grow bored and complain there is not enough content (PVE or PVP). They will soon leave and go back to the tried and true MMO of choice to do the same dailies and other repetitive things that masquerade as end-game content.

The other group will be the group that approaches the game at a slower pace, taking their time and enjoying the scenery (both literally and figuratively). They will get fed up from being left behind and leave or be content with exploring everything the game has to offer.

Neither style is good or bad or right or wrong, it is what it is and has been that way for many years now.

With New World, there are a few things that will be interesting to watch. Will the opt-in and opt-out PVP keep players around? Also, will the buy to play aspect of the game change the conversation? In terms of the playerbase, I really think it will have a long, sustained pattern of players coming and going and suspect it will be a lot like GW2 in how players approach the game (and by that I mean the lack of a sub and not having to feel like you have to get your money's worth - GW2 is refreshing in that way). I think a lot of players will play for a while then take a break then come back and then take a break. Its easy to do with this model and has been the story of my relationship with GW2 for years now.

I can say this for me - never have I been more excited to craft and gather and explore and see the sites. I hated NW to begin with but I changed the way I approach the game and it changed it for me and soon became a favorite.

New World is wide and not deep. Its horizontal progression, not only vertical. It is the game I have been waiting for for a long time.
what about the group that stops to smell the roses and doesn't give a damn about getting left behind?

The whole world for the most part is wide open to PvE; beyond the siege castles you fight over in world. turn on your PvP flag in a town if you want open world PvP. There are small bonuses in towns for your faction holding an area, but honestly it has little impact on pve. We had the same sort of flagging thing in SWG and it was great, but of course the griefers are complaining because they can't kill easy targets. Everyone else is having fun with pvp, no one misses them.

    Weapons too... and more...
And why would it go "f2p" ? It already has no subscription.

The game is still transitioning from a survivalish PvP MMO to a full fledged PvX MMO.

A year ago I thought the PvE elements were very minimal and there wasn't even any of the staple, on-demand, group content. They addressed the group content part with the addition of expeditions although IMO, they still need more of them, more easily accessible (entry is locked behind a token you can get from quest rewards or craft them) and starting at a lower level (currently the lowest level one is 25,)

It's still kind of awkward for group play outside the expeditions with no quest sharing and a lot of RNG with respect to what quests or tasks you have. This makes it so that syncing with a friend or a group is very hit and miss.

The basics though are in a very good place with outstanding world building, graphics and sound and the combat itself is engaging enough with a lot of variety depending on which 2 weapons you choose to use.

Currently IMO, It's worth the $40 entry fee (no sub after that) even if you get bored after a couple of months.

There's a lot of potential here and it could be a superb PvX MMO in a year or two once they work out the kinks.

And the weapons, and the armor, quest lines, theres something like 6+ expeditions that were found that were not accessible in the closed beta... I mean i get the standard is to just scoff at any MMO now-a-days and call it a flop if it doesnt make WoW money. But after playing the closed beta im actually willing to give this game an honest chance.

What is considered 'enough content at launch' by today's standards? Because stuff like raids and such are usually around a month post launch. I think the game has a lot of potential and I like the whole building up different builds on the same character aspect of the game, so for me its worth the $40 buy in. I just want to reserve my "this is dead" judgments until they've had around a month or so of release time (assuming they do not delay again).
