I think you said something like 'I am not a very famous internet personality, I can't see why anyone would bother to do that.' It has happened to guys who barely post on official forums, either due to spite, they think its 'funny' or people nick a name they think is good.

Hopefully you had an alterative favourite or a similarly spelled one. Not mentioning online names is a golden rule and with this global naming thing it is even more important.
Sit rep: My name is taken.
The only thing I can suggest is to contact the person in game and say "Do you really need that name?" I think that is grasping at straws but you never know it might even be a coincidence and just a name used for an alt, otherwise you need a new favourite never to be repeated online in social media.

Oh I'm having more fun than I am upset with this. It's mildly amusing, really. I've got backups I'm using in the meantime as well.

A name is a name is a name.

    Pick another one.

Even if they deleted the character, you would have to wait out the name being locked to their account to expire -- which reportedly is 90 days.

@lotrlore maybe you could set a reminder to check if it's available in 90 days from now, in case someone just created the character and deleted it immediately just to troll you.

If someone asked me if I needed my name, I'd tell them to prove they needed the name more than me. Essay form, I'd provide an email address. Otherwise, suck it, find another name. Names mean nothing. You are you. A character is a character.

That is the way I would look at it, but for some players having the same name is very important. I look for something that fits the theme and most names don't transfer that well from one MMO to another, so I nearly always have a new name.

For me having a particular name is important for keeping friendships and reputation among different games.

The same guild I joined in Vanguard (2007) and played other MMORPGs throughout the years, is now back for New World. I've always used the same name in every game I've played with them. They're all using the same names as well, again dating back to whenever they joined the guild. If I or they changed their names now, I wouldn't know them from a random person off the street. Your avatar changes from game to game, but your name becomes your identity.

Also, I'm not creative enough to think of a new name that easy! :D
