imageIs There A Shuttered MMO You'd Like To Bring Back As A Remake? | MMORPG.com

We see emulated servers bring back old MMOs as they stood when they were active all the time. Yet these time capsules bringing old games to life may not necessarily attract new players to discover what made them so great. Is there an old, shuttered MMORPG that you'd love to see be brought back to life, but not as a revived version of the old, but a remade version anew?

I know it is technically still around, but I would say Dark Age of Camelot or Warhammer Online (done right with 3 factions) or something like it. Not a PvE game with RvR as a e-sports scoring side note like in ESO or GW2.

Star Wars Galaxies with the same rules set as first released. No "NGO" or "Combat Upgrade" at all. Just improve the graphics, add some means of real missions given either by the old computer terminals or NPCs and more planets to explore and build cities upon. Also, flesh out the space game more.

Star Wars The Old Republic graphics were dated when it was in development. So were the mechanics. Thank the HeroEngine for that.

But I would love to see a modernized version of Star Wars Galaxies. All the original freedom, with updated graphics and combat. No queued combat or hybrid version of targeted combat. Think player-skill based combat with NO BUFFS. That's what still kills me about SWG. It's basically buff wars. It was back in the day too, but who really likes the outcome of a fight to be determined by who has the most buffs?

I'd love to see MMOs that aren't based on old school roleplaying mechanics. Like no levels, no statted gear. Star Citizen is currently the closest I've seen to what I'm looking for, but it's rocky and it's been in development for 10 years. Plus it's annoyingly too simulation based.

I agree there is room for remasters, SWG and Ultima Online would be my top choices. But I must admit my choices are skewed by not having played those games.

The problem is remake is not the same as remaster, it opens up that can of worms called "the modern game". So why I would be in favour of a lot of modernising in such remakes, there could be loads of changes which would be a turn off. So what you would actually "remake" with these 'old masters' is crucial.

Well many of the above suggestions are great, and I'd like to see them too. To add something new to the list, I have to say Age of Conan and Anarchy Online. Both great games. I believe a graphic remake would make both titles relevant again.

Odd.  No one has mentioned Asheron's Call yet.  While I didn't really care for the game as it stood, I absolutely loved the idea of major periodic global events.  Maybe not try to make them monthly, but rather quarterly.

Oh, and where's this forum's perpetual love for City of Heroes?  Good game, phenomenal character creator.  The things they tried to do (zone transits, layering, etc.) were plagued with all sorts of technical issues.  I'd like to see these done properly. (read: without the lag).

I slept in.  What's your excuse.

City of Heroes is a really good one, mad I forgot that one myself.

I'd honestly prefer CoH 2 to be a shared world action RPG, though.  Something with Marvel Avengers-like combat combined with CoH style character building.  That would allow missions and powers to become more involved and complex while maintaining the idea that we're in a world of heroes.  Drop-in/drop-out multiplayer on the fly in the open world, like Destiny.  Mmmmmmmmmmmm.  That would be *divine*.

100% Asheron's Call. I think the systems, quests, and community of it is needed in this day and age.

Star Wars Galaxies, EverQuest 1 and 2, Vanilla WoW, ASTA Online and Perfect World Classic.

I'd like to see these games relaunched in a brand new engine with new visuals that correspond to the old ones, so nothing wild like Retail WoW's art style compared to Vanilla WoW. Or Perfect World Classic's art style compared to the Retail version's art style that's just so out of whack.

And most importantly - for these games to play abide by the same rules as they did back in the day, just more streamlined and easier to get into.

Asheron's Call for sure. The UI overhaul would be a huge upgrade. AC skills built on New World type skill system would probably work well. Hell just take AC and rework all the old stuff to work with New World engine.

Imagining Asheron's Call reworked and plopped into the New World engine sounds pretty good.
