you seem to equate achievements gotten by the community of players as measure of how good a game is? just because people arent willing/able to finish parts of the game doesnt make it bad. a game
can be a very good game even if noone is able to finish it.
to some other points in the thread, yeah, pc controls are clumsy. but that's been a problem for all games that have been made for limited platforms in mind. at this point we just have to accept this, both in terms in less than ideal graphics and with the clumsy interfaces...
Is this an MMO, I thought it was a Single/Team game?
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
Open World with not everyone able to play 24/7. So yeah, people will hit a wall and try to find something else to do in the game and it may take them some time. Although I would have thought natural progression would lead everyone to at least Margit.
Plus I think you need to actually only beat 8 bosses to get through the game, so not everyone is hitting the same bosses. I found Rennan or wtv her name was last night in hour 62. I was about to kill her when I remember that killing her may affect NPC storylines, so i just let her kill me. But when I come back, I'll have the victory for sure.
I think the fact that not everyone is killing bosses 2 weeks in does make it an even better game

I just checked my achievements. I'm on NG+3 right now. Half of them are bugged for me. I think Steam Achievements and Elden Ring just don't work properly. According to it, I haven't beaten many of the bosses, or the game itself yet lol. I think the Author makes interesting points, but I don't think its a reliable metric, yet.
I don't get why you think mouse and keyboard should be the default controller for every game just cause it is on PC? Do you play sports games like NHL and Fifa with mouse and keyboard? Or platform games? Racing games?
RTS and FPS sure, but just get a controller and use it for games that are better with it.
While I agreee to an extent. Fifa and madden are both super easier to target hit down the line with mouse and holding the up arrow/crtl.
Fifa controller users literally get hammered on the pc version. Like baddly.
But yeah I'd rather use my controller simply because it's built for the wear and tear and it's far cheaper than my keyboard and mouse set up. Ez to replace, cheaper still.
I still think it's easier to drive by in GTA online with a mouse and then I'll switch to controller for the driving parts.
All in all unless you are using aim assist no matter what mouse and keyboard wins everytime unless it's rocket league or some stuff.
I already had 15+ hours under my belt before unlocking levelling up. Now with 40+ hours Margit still isn’t anywhere in sight. I have however made myself a nice Bloodloss / Int character. Next milestone is respeccing into a Faith character so I can wield the massive Holy/Bloodloss scythe I have found. Those are the real stories, not the silly path you can follow. Ohh, and Agheel and how I decided to kill him with just a dagger.
/Cheers, Lahnm
I think you need to beat rennala to respec.
I guess there's probably ways to do that before facing margit.
When I play I kind of gravitate towards the boss battles because that's where the challenge is. I guess there's a lot of other things to do out there too.

Yeah you do, so I have to start making actual progress eventually.
I also agree on the bossfights. However, off the beaten track is where you can/will be finding some very specific pieces of gear that might force/inspire you to completely change your build. For instance, I started with a pure Int build with a rapier when OoM. Then, in rapid succession I found a unique dagger and unique shield that both cause blood loss. So I have this weird hybrid build now. Then I found a Faith based scythe that causes blood loss but which basic damage is Holy. Now I will be working towards a build specifically for that. It is these original, specific builds and running them against those very bosses you mention that are the best there is for me. It must be my ancient Monster Hunter roots.

With ER being a GaaS game complete with Battle Pass and RMT game cash conversions it seems like it can't deliver on that at all.
This is 100% false. This game has none of this and will not. This is commonly known and is a big talking point amongst many commentators and news outlets, even those with otherwise negative opinions on parts of the game.

Rennala going down also opens up your opportunity to respec. It seems like you may benefit from that feature opening up considering you want to test some builds. Word of warning though: from what I know, there's a limited number of the reagents required to respec in the world.
Yeah you give her a larval tear and there is only a limited number of them per run as far as I know.
But it's a pretty high number. More than 10.
For me, I probably respecced maybe twice the first play through. Then after the second time.i wondered why I was respeccing because I could just grind out the levels I needed for the build I wanted, it just might take some time.
Being an MMORPG player has some advantages
The grind ended up taking a lot less time than I thought.

I do not play sports games. I don't play platform games. I don't play racing games. If the game requires a controller, I don't play it. I don't have a console or a controller.
If the game is on PC, and supports mouse and keyboard, then I might play it. So why does Elden Ring advertise they are on PC with mouse and keyboard, when their port from the console is so poor? Every tool tip is for the controller.
I don't expect every game to be mouse/keyboard, but if they say they are, then they should be.

We are kindred spirits, but I take it to a greater extreme, I rarely play anything for long that isn't an RPG, online or otherwise.
Mouse / keyboard are the only way I'll likely ever roll.

This is something I think should have hit them harder in reviews. The PC port is just shy of a joke.
They limit key button mapping and other standard PC options in arbitrary ways. They cap the framerate at 60, which is frankly bush league. The optimization is poor.
But the experience is great in spite of all these things.

So, apparently, you can change those tool tips to mouse and keyboard. A member on this site turned me on to that.
Go under system and the display and below that is "device for on screen prompts." You can then pick pc. It "should" have detected pc but the designers might think that players of "souls type" games might prefer controller and so it defaults to that.
To that end, while I feel mouse and keyboard works fine I would change some of the controls to your personal tastes.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I waited a bit and bit the bullet today. I ended up refunding it in the end. Just wasn't for me.
Have never really enjoyed the control scheme they use, was glad I could remap the keys as I don't play games on my PC with a controller 99% of the time. It did take me a minute to find the option to have the game show me keyboard commands instead of controller commands even though I was using the keyboard.
I am glad that it is doing well though. I know there are many that like the slam your head against the wall type games. Just not my thing. I need to relax when I play an this one didn't let me do that.
I'm trying to enjoy the game, but as a PC player with mouse and keyboard, I have to say that the UI is the least intuitive and most f'd up I've ever seen. That alone makes the game very hard to play.
Grab an Xbox controller and a PC adapter, or corded Xbox controller. I'm using my Series X controller with a wireless adapter and having a blast. It's the first time I've used a controller on a PC game, but it makes a huge difference.
Elden Ring is intriguing, but I'm a multiplayer kinda guy and always duo with my wife. From everything I've read about this game, the multiplayer sucks, and I will not be able to run around and adventure endlessly with my wife at my side, but only periodically will be able to "summon" her to fight certain bosses.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if this truly is the case, I'll pass and go play some other challenging game that does multiplayer more traditionally.

About 60 hours in, with most of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula done, save gaols and the night cavalry (I think, as I keep discovering stuff I missed!) Working on the castle still. Beat Margit, and have been exploring Liuria and Caelid. I am new to FromSoftware games and their difficulty, so there has been a learning curve and adjustment. However, I am enjoying Elden Ring now that I've accepted that repeated deaths is part of the learning process. I am only 4% by PS trophy progress. In another two or three hundred hours I may be over 50%. I'm in no hurry, and enjoying exploring at my pace and direction.

Im closing in on 70H in this game. One of the most ingenious games ever made. With that Said, Im too a souls virgin and alltho I usually stay a fair bit above average skill levels for most games some of the bosses have me buzzed. Godrick was my first nemesis. But after jumping head first into this massive beautiful world I simply returned super strong for revenge. Now, still at first playthrough having gone through every nook and cranny except for actual more story bosses. Getting into leyndell, passed the door master. Not too far off I think. But Rhandall and the GOD SNAKE in mount doom. O M G. For me on a strength build, pewh.. I have no more new places to visit. Hehe. Still, super fun and all encompassing game.
yeah a lot of casual newcomers who say its the best ever, when theyve never played the ones before it. its a very casual and forgiving version of souls.
