At first glance I thought the title was stating the game was shutting down, until I kept reading. Would seem weird since I thought it's still kinda popular with LoTR fans.
I think this game can get shitloads of new players with the new tv-series comming out. Would be cool if they managed to update the enige by end 2022. Game is stil great and comunity is top!
SSG May Be Sunsetting SOME or all Lifetime Accounts
Just an FYI - I don't know if you've seen this or covered it, but it appears that SSG has closed quite a few lifetime sub accounts.
There are multiple threads in the forums, reddit, elsewhere discussing members unable to get back into the game. The common thread appears to be lifetime sub members.
An e-mail states that their subscription has been updated (expires in 2038).
Afterwards, said users are unable to login or reset their passwords.
Support requests on the SSG help site have 1 or 2 responses. The first is an initial 'it has been escalated' response followed by a ticket close with no further response. The second is a 'we are unable to assist you' response that appears to be identical between users.
It's possible SSG does not have the support resources, or as many have guessed, they have decided to kill off the lifetime sub accounts without notice.
There are multiple locations if you search, but here's one of the threads on the forums:
still one of the best mmos out in game play and looks, and the world is huge, yes it could use a new engine, the game is definatly not on life support, so no it dosnt need to shut down

You need to do more than let the lore slip away to make such a great MMO go bad. But losing lore is a cheap way to make it look as if they are updating, just remove class restrictions.

The EG7 presentation said they are working on supporting LOTRO and upgrading it with "modernizations". Whatever that actually means is left to be said.
There was a datamined tidbit about controller support (appears to be FFXIV-crossbar inspired), but who knows.
Just distancing themselves even more from the solid lore approach Turbine established, its sad really.
They did that ages ago when they opened the game servers. We break the "established lore" by logging in. There's nothing in the books about the random character that follows the Fellowship like a groupie-fangirl following a band on tour.
ie: lore is a guide post, not a law that must be followed at all costs.

I agree that's the conundrum of creating an RPG from the get go. But the problem is the more you don't follow the guide posts the less relevant lore or story is. You can still say Lotro adheres to lore far more than so many MMOs, indeed most don't bother with more than a smidgen of lore. But has the game now reached the stage when those guide posts are not even checked before the next update is made?

They have the worst customer service I've ever seen in an MMO. The moment they get to your ticket they try to message you in game. If you aren't online they close the ticket. Oh and they are only online from like 9-5 EST so if you work then you're out of luck.
The OP there seemed to have been hacked but I'm not sure I want to reinstall just to check. If I do I'll post here.
EDIT: I installed the game and my lifetime account is still active. I think SSG has zero interest in spending any time helping people recover stolen accounts. As far as I'm aware they still don't use any sort of authenticator.

I'm not sure about that. The new TV series will feature ethnic main characters. As we all know LOTR online does not allow for ethnic characters who are dark skinned humans, elves, dwarfs, etc.
Unless the creators are willing to take their heads out of their ass, they'll never allow ethnic characters which would bring in many new players.

Unless they're shutting the game down, which would be the only valid way to justify terminating lifetime subs, hope they enjoy the lawsuits if true.
They could easily have stopped giving lifetime players free points every month, or drastically reduced how many were given. I still had to buy Moria and Mirkwood as a lifetime sub. But when they switched to optional subs they really have been generous to lifers, assuming they returned temporarily around that time just to ensure it remained. I never had to buy an expansion with my own money. Although I would have needed to spend if the game kept me playing.
And so the idea of them stealth banning all lifetime subs makes zero sense. They simply have a skeleton Customer Support team and the bean counters don't think good CS is important.
Most of those threads end up reading that they got hacked / stolen. In your linked case he even says he got an email saying "his changes were made", which sounds very much like someone changed the email address and password so they could control the account.

I wouldn't count on either of those things happening.

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Um, my Beorning is a female with black skin, so um...yeah.
I also main a black Beorning.
I don't know what a Beorning is since I don't play, but is it a human? Can I play as a black human?

Beornings are just human shape shifters so you must be able to. Load it up and take a look, but from what has been said you can, if even you don't join now I can't see how those "many new players" will be brought in. Be interesting to hear how it went for you.

The Hobbit films did nothing for the game really, so the TV show won't either. SWTOR got minor boosts from the Mandalorian but that was short lived as well.
LOTRO is super dated in terms of combat and questing. Even improving the art assets in the game, presumably for console release, will only be a minor improvement overall.

I may have to try out a hobbit lm too, a huge bear tagging along with my hobbit sounds entertaining to me.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
