I gotta be honest, I could give a rats ass about paying money for something I can never actually own. Why would I buy "land" in a video game when I can buy land in real life? Makes no sense. This NFT fad needs to die already. Games are meant to be fun, not a job. I know STREAMERS make it their job, but that doesn't ruin the game itself with horrible mechanics. Its literally a cash grab. His last game was a joke.... Shroud of the Avatar? What a joke of a game. Absolute trash. And it 100% failed. I tried it, garbage. Absolute garbage. I am glad I never paid for it. Did a free trial thing. Just a joke of a game. I fear game developers are too busy thinking about cash flow instead of thinking about making a good game. The best games of all time were not made for profit, they were a "brilliant idea they just had to share with the world" and because that idea had passion, it just so happen to sell extremely well. EVERY "greatest hit", your favorite title, guaranteed made with passion in mind, not profit. And modern game developers only care about profit, so the games suffer. Hell in the past years the most fun game I played was Elden Ring. Most other games are just boring trash. I am just so tired of cash grabs, because its LITERALLY ruining the gaming community. And kids today who never grew up on the greats, they don't know gaming is going downhill, they are being sold lead painted gold and thinking its gold, and its just sad....

If folks want to play something enjoyable like UO, try Shards of Britannia. It uses the legends of Aria engine and isn't bad at all for a free ran server item.

He reminds me of rockers that were one hit wonders 25 years ago and are still trying to recapture the magic decades later.......

Asshole is going to sell land before the game is even fleshed out lol. But knowing gamers and reading their contortionist apologetics in these forums about everything from lootboxes, to gacha to P2W to NFTs, I'm sure some will bite.

    Enjoy!

    :)
It is rather surprising to see people who should know better still lining up to drink the Kool-aid.

So, he gave up on a game hardly anyone gave a shit about? just to work on a game that... probably hardly anyone is gonna give a shit about, does that sum this up?

Ha, he's hardly the first.  I don't remember all of the prices, but star citizen sold ships for crazy money and people actually paid them!  I admit that I've supported games by buying them before launch, but buying assets like that seems crazy to me.  I'm a firm believer in if it's your money and you can afford it it .....'. Still, seems underhanded, all the same

I would have no issues with him starting a new MMO if he had stayed with SotA and seen that through to a solid game for a CF MMO. The fact he bailed on SoTA means I have no interest in his projects anymore; but as always lets see it launch, read the reviews and we can decide from there.

I actually like his last game, I know how most you feel about it lol. I still play it but probably going to pass on this next one. Too costly to get into another NFT like game. This Whales tits are dry and cracking and this game is not the oil for that.

Yeah, but he paid his way there, didn't earn it. (nevermind "who" he paid for the ride, cold warrior for life here)

Any rich guy can do that these days....

Hrrm, the parallels to gaming are a bit uncanny, don't you think?

Still, as a game developer, clearly is well past his prime as evidenced from anything he's delivered in the past 20 years.

But when it comes to fleecing the rubes, definitely one of his super powers.

Yeah, but he's found a whole new market of customers, cryptobros and NFT suckers....

5 will get you ten this ends up being a legendary rug pull before it all plays out.

Richard Garriott has been shown to be a total fake. When he is at the helm and in charge no good game ever came out of it. One failure after another.
Tabula Rasa being the most notorious and most expensive flop of all time, where he ripped off / scammed millions from NCSoft.

Ultima Online was the most successful of Ultima games, but no thanks to him, but Raph Koster who was the actual designer of the game and did all the hard work.

Except Akalabeth, Ultima I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VII, IX and X...
The guy was creating computer games when many of you guys weren't even born.
Akalabeth, created in 1979, even had 3D dungeons.

Just wait. The land-grab will be tied to the nft. Double the scam for you buck!

I too would love to have Tabula Rasa come back, but only if it could be improved from the last version. I loved that game.

Just like that old Bruce Springsteen song,
    Glory Days...

Besides, his past accomplishments do not excuse everything that has transpired since then.

Dude that was a completely different time.

He should have sticked to retirement after Ultima Online (again outsold all his previous work combined, all thanks to Raph Koster and not him!).

Fact remains, he cannot cope with nor handle modern game development. After UO he has not been part of a single successful game other than just scamming people (and companies) out of money by throwing his name card.

Hardly anyone remembers him anymore for his successes 40 years ago, but instead all his failures and scams of the last 20 years.
