When it comes to dedicated MMORPG players, mobile is often considered a dirty word. Nick explores this and asks the question, whether or not mobile MMOs will ever truly be accepted by MMORPG fans.

I will certainly never accept mobile MMOs!

First, mobile technology is unlikely to ever match PC technology, which makes it the inherantly weaker gaming platform.

Second, whilst a few do exist, the majority of mobile MMORPGs are not actually massively multiplayer. I believe this is mostly because mobile tech cannot handle MMO numbers, so maybe this will change in the future. But, I have a deep dislike of "regular" multiplayer numbers, I would much rather go down to coop or single player, or go up to MMO. That middle ground gives the worst of both world imo.

The primary problem with mobile is the user interface: a tiny touch screen. That makes things really difficult to do anything sophisticated because now your ui is fighting your input controls for screen real estate. Oh, you wanted to actually see what your fighting as well? My bad. Even if the can cram the horsepower of a modern gaming PC into the size of a phone some day in the future they will never solve that. I suppose you could have a docking station for your Megaphone (TM) so you could have a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse but at that point are you really mobile gaming?

I would be fine with it if the mobile market wasn't so okay with Pay to Win, auto play, and the insane UI. I have tried so many mobile MMO's and every single one you log in, get 70000 different exclamation points you need to click to redeem different daily rewards, claim different rewards, claim mail, just overwhelming amounts of pointless "free" currency and items, then you auto path to every single quest and just let it fight it out for you, and get 50 pop ups about different packs you can buy to progress faster instead of being walled behind months of waiting for the currency to roll for some RNG gatcha system of gear upgrades or character upgrades. It's a weird way to play games. I don't understand how anyone falls into spending tons on them, there isn't even enough game there to justify spending anything usually.

Never. Because to accept them you need to accept all the pay-to-win horseshit that comes with them.

As someone who has vision issues, I'll never accept anything displayed on anything smaller than a 23" monitor (or larger) again. Even if the most perfect match for my gaming desires showed up on mobile tomorrow, I simply can't see it.  Let's forget about trying to manipulate a touch screen that offers little-to-none in the way of tactile feedback.

Yes.  Once technology expands so that the mobile device can provide the same input and output (or better) than a current PC can do.  Right now a mobile MMORPG is the equivalent of trying to watch a 3D IMAX movie on your phone.  Can you do it?  Sure!  Is it a satisfying recreation?  Not even close.

I've never really had a problem with mobile itself, just mainly the monetization (most using the gacha system). There are some that are 'fairer' (another eden and opera omnia come to mind but they aren't mmo types really) but spraying air freshener on a turd doesn't change what it is at the end of the day.....

There are only 1-2 purely mobile MMORPGs that actually play like real MMORPGs without being really shallow, small and with Auto Play. Ancients Reborn is one of them:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sensoryplayapps.adventure

The game is something like RuneScape for Android.

It's the other 99.99% that give a bad reputation to mobile MMORPGs and big developers aren't doing anything to improve this.

Nope. It will always be seen as lesser.

However advanced mobile technology becomes it will be less so than the concurrent level of PC technology.

I gave up on mobile years ago. Screens are too small. Controls are useless or near to useless.

The mobile MMO market is at least 10 times bigger than the console and PC MMO market combined.

So, it seems to be doing OK for itself despite the opinions of a handful of geezers in this thread.

There are a lot of people in SEA and Africa that don't have computers, at least in Africa and phones are their main gaming device.

A fun game is a fun game.  A good mobile MMORPG should also be a good PC MMORPG.  If it's not fun to play on PC, then it's not a good mobile MMORPG.  The other way around isn't necessarily true, as a fun game on PC might not be properly playable on a phone.

A lot depends on what you count as an MMO.  If you exclude games that don't have any shared world where you could see other players, but have leaderboards where you can basically compete to see who spends the most money, then the mobile MMO market would be a lot smaller.

I remember trying to play the Diablo Immortal beta on my phone (not an MMO but close enough) and while I had some fun, my hands got sore after a while from playing. Until they can fix the problem of the interface being much smaller on a phone due to screen size than with a console or PC, I'll pass.

A lot smaller, so only 5 times bigger than console and PC MMOs combined.

Just because something is popular isn't a good enough reason for me to play it on my phone. I don't mind playing a good mobile game on my PC but not on the phone.

There is no way I will ever play an MMORPG on a tiny screen. It's baffling to me how anyone can even see anything. Plus all that bending over this tiny screen cannot be good for your neck and back in the long run.

I prefer to relax in my chair with a controller and PC with a  huge screen I don't have to squint at to see anything properly. I genuinely feel sorry for people who play an MMORPG on a phone. Plus about the MMORPG qualifier, how many people can mobile games fit to qualify as an MMORPG?

I haven't tried playing it on a phone, but Uncharted Waters Origin is a lot of fun on PC.  It doesn't do any of the things that you say that nearly all mobile MMORPGs do, largely because it's not primarily about combat.

It will do some things automatically, such as sailing to a particular location that you choose, but even that comes with a lot of stuff to react to along the way.  But it's very open-ended so that there is rarely a natural, obvious next location to go to.  The gameplay decision is fundamentally about choosing where you want to go next, not the mechanics of how to get there.

The game does have a lot of microtransactions, but they're mostly blue gems that can readily be earned in large quantities just by playing the game.  Unlike many (most?) mobile MMOs, it doesn't constantly shove the store into your face.  I don't entirely know what the developers were thinking when they designed the business model, but they seem to be planning to make money on:

    1)  whales who are willing to drop a hundreds of dollars to get the same things that free players will get, but get them sooner,
    2)  selling non-starter admirals for 5000 red gems ($55) each, and
    3)  blue whales willing to drop many thousands of dollars to rank up S-grade mates, even though it isn't essential and doesn't even help all that much.

And on point (2), you literally can't buy it until you reach company level 30.  I'm not even there yet at 125 hours played.

It also makes little sense to me that with the economy in shit how people are still spending money on mobile games.

  • NanfoodleNanfoodle Member LegendaryPosts: 10,901
The problem is not the platform. It's the quality of the game and the payment model. Mobile games seem to be fine with being micro dinged on a level that is unfair in the minds of gamers that PC Game exclusively. The quality is in the auto play that comes with mobile gamers. Old school gamers play to be challenged not to get pat on the back for what ever auto play achievements we can earn.
