Their Creation Engine is one of the main culprits in this and really starting to show it's age.
if Bethesda wants to stay in business, they have pull their finger out of their arses and start to invest in new tech!

Hmmm, it's my understanding that game engines are somewhat modular and that any bit can be swapped out for something more "new" and updated.

So what is it that this engine is not doing. I suspect what's really happening here is that it's a design choice over an engine choice.
That really depends, but from what I understand the Creation Engine is based of the old Gamebryo engine. They just have been modifying and patching it up over the years and there just comes a time when you reach the limitations of such an engine.
As that is the first mistake. When you start to heavily modify and existing game engine, you loose support from the Engine creator nor will you be able to update and upgrade it to newer versions (which often means newly added technological features).
Bioware made the same mistake with SW:TOR for example. Buying an existing engine and then heavily modifying it. Unable to upgrade it to newer versions.

The creation engine is just incredibly old by now and their Creation Egine 2 seems to be just another iteration based off the same old Creation Engine 1. Just to make it compatible with newer hardware.
It just starts to become cost prohibitive to try implement new technology and I think that is why they struggling/unable to implement it.
As this requires some very specialized and experienced developers to pull off. If it's even possible at this point to find anyone with deep understanding and technological know-how of the old Gamebryo engine.

Anno 2023 and this game doesn't support HDR. Doesn't support Ray Tracing, no DLSS, their FSR implementation attempt is broken/half assed, etc.
Ray tracing I could care less about, but it's starting to become mainstream now in major AAA titles.
Not supporting HDR in 2023 is just a complete joke and especially this game could have greatly benefitted from this, as everything is just way too bright and oversaturated at times. Especially in Space.

Then look at the characters. I mean sure, they look better than any previous Bethesda game (except non-companion NPC's. They look absolutely horrid!).
When you take some major AAA titles the last couple years like CP2077, Death Stranding, FF7 remake, FF16 or Sony's mainline titles (to name a few) and you will quickly notice how far behind Bethesda has fallen to the competition.
The production quality of the characters, motion capture and animations are on so much higher level these days and Bethesda is just falling more and more behind.

Then we get to the biggest problem in how heavily chopped up the game is in tiny areas full of loading screens or vast, boring, barren, repetitive landscapes. The game is full of it!
This is what you get when you try to push the graphical limits of an ancient Game Engine, where you end up having to compromise on either map size or having to severely limit the amount of unique assets. Starfield is really suffering from this.
Other game engines have better features/clever tricks to hide this with smooth chunk transitions without having to use a load screen all the time, with much better optimization overall.

    I still think that's a choice.

Like I said, it's my understanding that a game engine is made up of parts. So theoretically they could remove, for lack of a better word, a module and update it.

I believe @blueturtle indicated that this was how game engines work (in a previous post). So these areas (whether they are tiny or not is another thing) are how Bethesda opted to portray their world.

I think they made decisions on how they would proceed, Todd Howard indicating they wanted space to be "a separate thing" and they just updated what they needed and designed/built from there.

So yeah, if they wanted to update lighting or physics or "whatever," they could have done it. At least, this is my understanding.

How about we stick to Starfield?

30 minutes until it unlocks on Gamepass.

I personally am looking forward to it and could not care any less about what pronoun someone else wants to use or call themselves.

    I hope you like it.

I'm enjoying my self a lot, but I like Skyrim, FO4, and FO76. My son and I were comparing some spoiler free notes and our saves are very different. I've been going heavily down the main story, unlocking the mystery, while he got sidetracked and is currently a double-agent, with mixed loyalyties, spying and feeding misinformation for two different factions.

I do not know what any of that means because I have avoided spoilers but it sounds pretty cool!

That's just it; for us norms the bickering is exhausting. Some folks just have a problem with accessibility of any kind.  It's a feature most won't use, kind of like colorblind modes or wheelchair ramps. Let those who want it have their pronouns, no one cares.

It's even worse. The pronoun thing is just a setting in the Character creator you spend literally 1-2 seconds on and then never see again in your entire playthrough.

Guys, politics is against the forums rules and we have way too many posters banned for this sort of thing. As someone who is just fed up with seeing people banned I am doing yet another of these posts which I am sure must seem repetitive to some of you, they certainly do to me!

One warning for those starting to play today!

Save manually often and regularly, especially when tackling large side missions! A lot of these I have attempted / done so far, are bugged to hell and glitch constantly on you!

Don't be fooled by those paid reviewer shills telling you the game is virtually bug free! No it's not!

The main story missions are well polished and pretty much trouble free sor far! Probably the only content most these reviewers have done.

I wish I could say the same for the side content. Sadly a lot of the side content has some serious troublesome bugs/annoying glitches that are literally game breaking.
It's super annoying and especially when you overly rely on auto save (since you have a limited set of saves only. Max 10, with the couple last saves constantly cycling/overwriting through auto saves, every time you switch instance with load screen).

I learned it the hard way yesterday, when I was in the moment of an exciting mission quest line and about half way, the game glitched on me and the last auto saves didn't resolve the problem!  So I lost over 2 hours of game time, reloading my last manual save file and start all over from the beginning, just to glitch out again half way on the same point. This time I had a more recent manual save point, but it's super annoying.

Most of these glitches are enemies getting stuck in walls and structures, disappearing from the map, making it impossible for you to complete these missions.
Leaving the building or go back to orbit doesn't fix it!

Another frequent glitch are missions with enemy invasion phases, where the game just gets stuck in a wave. This particular glitch cannot be resolved with reloading last save, as it just kept glitching on the same wave over and over again. But luckily with this one I could resolve it by returning to orbit with my ship and landing again. It then spawned the last wave thankfully so I could continue and finish the mission/quest.

These are just some examples. So be warned and manually save frequently and NOT overly rely on auto save (or even quick saves)!

    ---------------------

PS. I have not seen a single patch as of yet. No day one patch has been released yet either so far.

So another strategy can be to ignore the side content for a while, until a couple large patches have released.
Especially the larger side mission chains that don't use procedural generated content and cannot be reset other than loading a previous manual save!

So don't go and leave a bugged/glitched out major side mission and continue playing some other missions (thinking of coming back at a later date), as then you will never be able to finish that mission (and if it's part of a large (important) side mission chain, never able to finish that entire chain!).
Then it's better to reload your last manual save before you started this chain/mission and avoid it altogether until a later date, after some patches have released to try again.

    Awesome game. Just awesome.
It is everything I was hoping it would be.
It is not a flawless game.
It is a Bethesda game after all but man is it good.
Not a surface dweller game for sure. You really have to dig in and explore the systems and processes to maximize the potential.
     Just fantastic.

I never rely on autosave even my Atelier games have 50 slots of saves. I've never understood how as gamers we would ever trust our time investment to auto anything. I also save the saves on a separate folder just in case they get corrupted.

They released a whopping 14mb patch to unlock preoder DLC. That's apparently where Bethesda's priorities are at. I'm going to start calling them Bethzon.
That's a bizarre thing to complain about. Preorder items were likely already done when they started selling preorders, and the patch to unlock them is just for unlocking.

Yes but you quickly run into trouble if you are stuck inside a very long mission where you go through a lot of load screens that trigger an auto save.  So you can easily end up in a situation when you bug/glitch out and need to reset, you end up having to load a much older manual save and lose a ton of game time.
It can be extra heartbreaking when you stumbled upon a nice piece of gear with good rolls and end up losing it again.

There are so many stupid design decision in this game that make this issue worse.
Being able to "cancel/delete" a mission, or even better with long missions with dozens of sub missions, able to reset a sub mission, so you can start over without losing stuff or lot of time, would alleviate much.

    ---------------

PS. Another issue. When you complete Mantis mission and acquire the popular Razorleaf ship, don't store weapons in the weapon rack.
I stored some rare and legendary weapons in the rack for display and now a day later when I loaded my last save file, the rack is empty! All weapons just disappeared!
    So another bug/glitch!

I read other reports it's the same thing with storage boxes in The Lodge and on your ship (not to be confused with Cargo hold).

Unlocking the pre-orders isn't the big complaint, the big complaint is no day one release patch to address anything they've had a week of "early access" to be aware of, as well as anything they already would have known existed.
They had 5 days of early access, two of which were on weekend.

That would be enough if they had to do hotfix to one or two critical bugs, but Stafield doesn't really have those. Instead they have 100+ different small bugs. Realistically we should see a patch with large number of bugfixes within a couple of weeks.

Bethesda can be criticized for releasing the game with the bugs in the first place, but your expectations on how fast they should fix those bugs are unrealistic.

A lot of Journalists / Streamers got the game 2 weeks prior to Early Access.

From the average Journalist I don't expect anything, since they just play the Main campaign a couple hours and then post glowing review about how its the best evah!

But I am sure they must have gotten feedback from early streamers, as there are a ton of game breaking / annoying bugs in this game Bethesda must have known about for weeks now.

The game goes "Gold" often 1-2 months before release. Which is another reason why we have seen these large Day 1 patches in recent years. (of course because of unrealistic deadlines, rushed game releases)

It's no different with this Game and I thought Bethesda said there would be a big Day 1 patch.... just that we haven't seen it yet.

Who cares about facts when they don’t align with your opinion. Then we call “those” people ‘paid shills’ or compare small, linear, static games with massive, interactive, open worlds and draw ‘conclusions.’ I especially despise bottom of the barrel twitch leeches with fake opinions as evidence.

And I play Starfield, haven’t had any bugs or autosave issues in the first ten hours or so, even the ragdoll physics aren’t spazzing out all over the place. I do think the graphical quality is disappointingly inconsistent to a point where you really notice (just like in Final Fantasy VII Remake really), the various maps, zones, space, cockpit etc. transitions disconnected, and I think the ‘Miner to Constellation member’ has serious pacing issues. Not far enough in for any further serious criticism really.

16 GB for me on PC to be exact. The version number changed from 1.6. to 1.7. I even posted about it here the day after it happened:

I must be one of those shills too because I'm level 45, have done a shit-ton of main, faction, and side quests, and have never had one single, solitary case of needing to reload an old save because of a game-stopping bug. The only times I ever find myself going back to old saves (and typically they are saves from 30 seconds ago) is when a persuasion attempt doesn't go the way I want and I "save scum" to get a better result :)

I've seen screenshots on Reddit of people who have had graphic glitches like missing body parts, etc., but I've only had one of those and it was Sarah, my companion, in a cut scene talking to me in a hostile atmosphere when she said one of her lines she reverted to her no-space suit look but then went right back to her space-suited self on the next line and after the dialogue cut-scene was over she was back to her correct, suited dress....

That is actually the most serious glitch I've had.

Andreja has something very valuable to me since I'm doing a stealth sniper playthrough: her stealth is also at level 4 so she only very rarely reveals us and I can go about my business of killing all hostiles from 1/2 mile away :)

Romance isn't a big deal for me either. I'm much more interested in whether they can help me while fighting or not.

When it comes to capable fighting companions, I lean towards Sam Coe and Andreja.

Sam is extremely useful, when doing the Freestars faction questline, for example. Since he is former member and highly respected, without trying to spoil anything.
