I agree and disagree, as gamers only complain when a quick launch is a poor one. These days a too soon launch is almost the default position studios release games in. I am in the 'let them take their time camp', but as long as they are taking money before launch I have to put a question mark over what is going on. Partly the negative attitude players have occurs because they are damned if they do media releases and damned if they don't. I think just like Pantheon we have had our fill of such "articles" about AoC.

So if they want to continue to generate interest by doing these releases they have to be prepared for the kick back from players who are weary of the never ending saga of development, which after so long seems to have taken the place of actually launching a good game.
Here's the thing.  All things are developed on a budget. There can be time and cost overruns for sure as uncertainty in any effort can happen.

It definitely is a matter of degree. A few years of overrun is not unreasonable, probably even expected by most, but, 5, 10 or even 15 years?

Totally unreasonable, no matter how hard some try to dismiss concerns about it.

The ends do not justify the means, never did, never will.
If they delivered a good launch in five years time I would consider them exonerated, but then I have put no money in and not been fed unrealistic timelines from the beginning. If I had I would not be able to take the long view.

I helped develop rift years ago and there’s nothing strange about this development pipeline. Most MMO’s spend 5-7 years before they sell a single box. Intrepid neeed tons of mechanics that didn’t exist in game, but honestly UE5 was life saver for them because it had Tons of those systems built into it. UE5 was like someone decided to build the best Mmorpg engine that could ever be built. By the time UE5.5 or 5.6 hits there will probably be other tools begging to be used. Your first 2 years of development hell are figuring out what systems you need and writing them. UE5 saved ashes tons of cash and allowed it to basically just 1.5-2 years of production, outside of proof of concept. There’s a reason big name are coming over now and it’s because they honestly didn’t think it was possible before. They thought it over promised and would surely under deliver. A reasonable thing when you knew the state of technology then Vs now.

Alpha 2 is next year. Usually alpha 2 buts you 7-10 months from release. I fully expect to play AOC no later than the end of 2024 of within 3 months of 2025. Depending on huge and class design and how many linking a couple classes changes your character. I hoped for a lot but Steven dampened that idea. Honestly I had hoped for an Archage class system or what I designed in Rift a soul class design.
If it launches that early I don't think we will see a good launch. But you have been following this far closer than me, I am just basing this on a general impression regarding how long this has taken so far.

Funny how some people dislike being blatantly lied to by people who take their money and some do not.

Some almost take it and wear it as a badge of honor that they were lied to.

Oh, they more than just take it...

Of corse I hate being lied too but the fact is the majority of companies lie to us to make more money, at best they just dont disclose the truth of the matter. Like most I am numb and just take everything with a grain of salt.

I do laugh that people still going on about Ashes not releasing in the stupid window they said they would release is a laughable matter. How dumb do you have to be, to think a new company with no prior assets made. Could build a new AAA style MMO in 2-3 years? Most MMOs take 5-8+ years to make. Reality check people.

At this point making fun of that fact is just redundant and useless. Time to judge them on what they have done. I have my worries, I state them on the Ashes forms. I personally think they have some real problems. They also have done some things I am very happy. Fact they added a year of products to port everything to UE5, was an awesome move.

I'd say the original problem is that if the developers claim they will release in what is an obviously stupid time frame, then it follows that either they are stupid, or they expect their customers to be stupid.

What you really want are developers that actually are fairly accurate in their estimate of the time it will take, the development costs it will incur, and the total available market which translates to the profit they expect to make. Developers with a good track record are reliable and will usually bring in more investors.

Conversely, developers who miss their targets by a mile are obviously not very competent or experienced. This is what makes kickstarter so attractive to them, the public is gullible and ignorant and easily swayed.

Sorry but I agree and disagree.  By this point, and the point when Ashes of Creation launched their Kickstarter both the public AND Stephen should have known that 3 years was unrealistic.  This is why I did not back it.  I felt that he was blatantly lying.

But, because people were silly and BELIEVED him, does not in any way, shape or form EXCUSE the fact that what he said was proven to be utterly and totally wrong.

So I will happilly point and yes laugh each time this (self-censored) pops up with some kind of hype piece.  Especially one that is stating they are "removing speculation" about any aspect of this farce. Lets keep the facts in view here.  It was promised in 3 years.  The date was defended.  Other games that missed their dates were mocked by the devloper. Its now DOUBLE the timeline given and the game will just MAYBE be in some kind of alpha 2 state next year.  Those are facts.

Will I play it IF it launches and is fun?  Absolutely!

But I will not stand by and excuse a long list of broken promises and bad behavior simply because I want to eventually play some game.  My standards are a bit higher than others it would seem.  Maybe higher than most.  So be it.

Sorry but I felt then like now. Rifts Roots and Trees system was the most original and well planned and unique systems ever used for class design. Our support classes worked exceptionally, out CC and tanking worked hand in hand and healing was actually fun. Cloromancer being my favorite healing class I built.
As an original Chloromancer I agree!

But personally I think you guys went off track between Alpha/Beta and launch when you made it so easy to just swap classes and combos on the fly.

Kickstarter Alphas is currently scheduled to launch in 2018, with Betas following after that. Note, this schedule is subject to change based on development milestones.

I mean .. its just .. 5 years later ( 6 in 2024 ) that we will have Alpha .............two!

I don't want to know how many Alphas will they have. 3 ? 5 ?

With Alpha 1 started in 2020  .. if Alpha 2 will also be 4 years long .. oh well. Game might release at the same time as Star Citizen ...

Ok lets take that at face value, there were some naive backers. Your not one of them. Why on every update then, are you regurgitating a 7 year old bit of news? Do you think people have not figured out by now it was a lie? Can you talk about the state of the game?

Or are you just been game bashing to shut down legitimate conversation about a real game that has made real progress? People have played it and they keep showing us update of real game play. We get it, they lied. Still making what looks like a really cool game. What dont you like about the game? What do you like?

Great now we are talking about the game. Progress? They post the progress monthly. We have seen new classes added. Skills from not just the base build but from specs that will include sub class selection. The Cleric update was very deep. The options for healing looks down right fun and not just standard stuff. Some thing that have no been done for healing classes.

The update on the progress on UE5 was jaw dropping. The difference in the look and feel was much improved. Environments look jaw dropping. I could go on and on. Sure their are updates on minor things but we have seen many on real progress. Its not even hidden, go look at their youtube channel. Cherry pick what you want to see. Lots of gameplay as well. The Warrior and Archer combat videos are awesome. Combat looks very fluid for a tab game.

As for how much progress. We have mostly seen the grass lands of the game. Its thats roughly the size of Skyrims maps in entirety. Its mostly finished but as they add systems, they have been rolling them out on the other maps. So when they focus on another area, it will come together faster then the Grass Lands.

Time Line, ya they are 1-2 years before Beta Testing comes is what I guess. Again, I dont wan them to rush. Im happy the added an extra year of development to upgrade to UE5.

As for talking about time lines. We have a lose date on Alpha 2. Thats subjective when it comes to how much of the game is done, as games are not all built the same way.

Your turn. What do you like about the game? What features are you looking forward to, if the game releases?

Maybe it is, but if so that just highlights the farce even more.  That you think it's off base to talk about the timeline in an article that is literally about the timeline says a lot.

Sure their are updates on minor things but we have seen many or real progress.

What features are you looking forward to is the game releases?

So what I am hearing is that you still have no date, not a day, month or even a year for release?  That you don;t have a date for beta?  Just a personal guess?  And that the only date we have is a loose YEAR for an alpha test?

And yet you think that's not a subject of valid discussion in a news post about the alpha test 2024 announcement?

Sorry, but I think this is EXACTLY the place for those discussion and far more so than any discussion around a "Cleric Update" from July (It's October).

If you want me to say the game looks pretty, yes it does.  But so did Chronicles of Elyria right?

When the next gameplay news article comes out do an @slapshot1188 and ask me my thoughts on any specific gameplay items and Ill be happy to give my thoughts.

Just as an FYI- both of those videos show being over a year old.

But honestly they have changed a lot of combat over time.  Is that still the way combat will be next year when the test launches? Will it be that way in 2027 for Beta?  Or 2029 for launch?

The animations look great.  But if we are 5 years from release does that matter? How many more times will the combat change between now and then?

So I got ya. You are upset they have a failed projection of a game release and also upset they dont have a release date they can be sure of. I show you progress that real but you dismiss it. Only topic you want on this game is just date bashing. Leads me to think, you have nothing positive to say on any topic about this game. Ok, I will move on. Just wanted to be clear =-)

As for the dates of the vids. I was just showing you some of the ones I enjoyed. There are current videos as they drop monthly. I am sure the conversation would be the same no matter what info I dropped. My point stands. You will just say the same thing on the next time you respond to an Ashes update. "This game is late in its release"

6 years and we are talking about alpha 2. alpha 2! we ain't talking about the game, we're talking about alpha 2. next year we are getting alpha 2. not the game, but alpha 2. 7 years and maybe we get alpha 2, not 7 years for the game, but 7 years for alpha 2. when do we get the game, who cares since we get alpha 2 in 2024.

I don't care how long it takes. I just want them to get it right. Funny how gamers get upset when games launch to soon and when they take to long. :'D

So be it.

Lets play this game.  They missed their date. When is the new targetted release date?  Answer that with a date and I will answer one of yours.

How much "progress" was made? What percent was done? What is left to go?

CoE always posted "progress" updates right until they didn't.
KoE now posts all their "progress"
Camelot Unchained has never ending progress
Star Citizen has been progressing for over a decade
    Pantheon?  Plenty of "progress"

But for this update?  What "progress" am I supposed to discuss?  That they gave us a target YEAR for an Alpha 2 test?  That is all this article stated.  That they are announcing 2024 as the target YEAR for Alpha 2.

Retaining my progression after it releases of course, first and foremost.

How progress is accomplished is a secondary consideration really.

Wait. You aren't one of those folks who play games for "fun" are you?

    ;)

Regarding "progress" it really doesn't much matter how much developers have done.

What matters more is how much work is remaining and when will it be completed are the most important questions.

All of these indie MMOs fail badly on answering these, even ones like SC and it's nigh infinite funding.

Gameplay changes, especially the further from release a game is.

No one understands this better than fans of 7D2D, another long overdue Kickstarter game which is 10 years in the making, on Alpha 21 with an Alpha 22 up next with nary a release date in sight.

They still regularly rework major game play systems every new alpha yet are no where near delivering on their promised Kickstarter designs.

Pretty sure they've given up on some considering anyone who asks for an update on an official channel gets locked and banned for asking.

    Yup.

Are Stephen and his merry band of developers getting closer to release?  I have no idea.  Have they done "something" over the last few years?  Yes.   But how much is left to release?  No clue.

I can walk toward a rainbow all day but never get there.  Am I progressing?  Am I getting closer to it?  I mean, I AM doing something right?  Someday I am sure I will reach that pot of gold.

These Kickstarter MMOs give us completely unrealistic launch dates because they know if they are honest and tell us the truth that the "gameplay" video they just showed you was not representative of the game at all and that development will take at least 10 years then no one would donate to the Kickstarter.

Kickstarter MMOs is like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. He knows he's being tricked but he falls for it every single time.
