I've been a Pantheon supporter since whenever backing became available and I've been defending the game against naysayers for years. At this point, I'm starting to think it's time to eat crow and accept that we'll never get another Everquest/Vanguard type MMO, which sucks because Vanguard was my favorite game of all time, even with all its bugs.
I'm in the exact same boat. I'm eating a whole Thanksgiving feast of crow. Monsters and Memories is an unapologetic EQ clone that seems to be making good progress.
Monsters and Memories looks promising and I love Everquest. recently I have been looking to play Everquest again on P99 and one with bots to try to play the game when there are hardly enough players. I did tell you all about Nyctermoon the WoW private server with good AI companions and so am now looking for a similar experience with Everquest.

I have been following them for a while. They are really transparent and they have a really good vision. They are also developing in a really impressive speed.
I did find out something about this 247 mode and how it differs from what CU did. The 247 mode takes place in locations in the Pantheon MMO. This is not a new game or battle grounds. These events take place inside the game they are developing. Think what you want of that info.
Volunteer development is fine, if your project or product is open source. Slap a GPL 3.0 license on the engine, keep the assets closed, and people will lend their time and skills to a project.
Both this project and mmrpg gamers want their cake and eat it too, in my opinion. Make some compromises and get to play something good (not perfect), or get nothing at all.
My god it always bothered me the view point in Everquest and after 24 years I found out scroll and first person view will scroll out to the third person view I need. OMG 24 years and I find this out yesterday.
Population is not bad about 80 people playing. Not as good as P99 but there's chat and helpful people...what more do you need.
Again I'm in awe of the dedication, effort and innovation these private servers manage.

I know I go on about guilds too much but this is an area where they shine, you mention an issue and someone says "but you do know that if you...".
True but this is so much like a guild in that people answer all the time despite the fact that there're so few playing. You do not need a huge population of rude, unhelpful and snarky folk. What you need is just a few kind souls that help and offer to help. I watched as people continuously offered to help others complete a dungeon. It's not a massively multiplayer game you need when you play but just a few people that actually stop read and reply. Same thing I found in the City of Heroes private servers. These communities are such gems.
I know I am speaking blasphemy as far as MMORPG philosophy goes but I am so done with huge games full of jerks.

Well in a sense a good enough community takes on some of the functions of a guild. To me guilds help separate us from the jerks when you can't rely on a good community which is in every commercial MMO these days. But there are other things you can look for as well. Private servers tend to have a better sort of community as do MMOs which look back to the old days; finally if the MMO is a new MMO it had better at least be B2P, if not a horde of idiots will descend on it.
