Not really, because WoW has become the king of killing itself and will continue to be the king of killing itself lol.

This is not new news. This has been the pitch as long as I pledged at the kickstarter. They have a type of player they are marketing and Steven has said more times then I can count. "If this is not your game, that's ok"

IMO, Activision has been gutting Blizzard since they bought it. I hope under Xbox we get back the developer we knew. One can hope.

Do people really still think WoW is the benchmark by which new mmo's need to be compared to etc?

They wish to be the "killer of WoW", aka doing better than WoW..but no, it won't. AoC will be a very niche game. Games who spends so much in development, are pretty much doomed to ..not shine.

AoC will be mediocre at best.

Quite literally the opposite of what they have been pushing the whole time. Their actions and words don't convey otherwise. What is it with people not believing devs when there is no cause (from them) to not believe what they say and what they are doing? AoC being a "niche game" is it's default position by being an MMORPG, to begin with. "AoC will be mediocre at best." to what standard or specific niche, within the niche genre are you comparing it to?

Right, since Intrepid studios have never given players cause to doubt their word...

Oh wait, nevermind...they definitely have before which is probably why many don't believe them today.

Kyleran, do you think that Intrepid is trying to develop a "WoW killer"?
  • MazenealMazeneal Member UncommonPosts: 170
Also......."Games who spends so much in development, are pretty much doomed to ..not shine." $63 million is not chump change....and that's probably closer to $100 million, just in initial development, compared to today. If you meant time to develop, Intrepid just was able to hire an equal sized team, last year, in comparison to how many were there for WoW's launch. Why are some of y'all so bitter!? Stop it, it's not good for you ;)

WoW has been the top MMORPG or very close to for a long, long time. It doesn't matter what people think. WoW has earned it's place as a benchmark.

Briefly but WoW then reasserted. Still, that it happened at all is remarkable. I don't know which of the two is currently on top.

This game has been in development so long, they've pretty much killed their own hype and that's about all they'll kill.

Agreed, this isn't news. Any smart developer would say they're not trying to kill WoW.

Sounds like something a developer would claim in 2012.

To kill WoW you at least need to have a finished game, not a forever alpha backers milking machine.

WoW couldn't be killed by FFXIV, a MMORPG that many feel to be exceptional and is backed by abundant resources. If a game in such a favourable position can't kill WoW none of their competitors can.

WoW is the only game that can kill WoW, and even it is having a bloody hard time doing so. No matter what mishandling or controversy surrounds it the game weathers the storm and still remains at the top or close to.

No, they know better than that I'm sure.

Though when you think about it, that bar is probably lower than it's ever been, so maybe.
