they are ramping up development, hiring, and financing to bring Final Stand: Ragnarok and Camelot Unchained to market.

Maybe it's just semantics since it's "EA", but being able to pay $19.99 to play Final Stand: Ragnarok today seems like it's already brought to market....

Definitely a semantics thing when I wrote that. It's in Early Access yea, they are touting the full release for next month. I can edit and word that differently to avoid confusion, though.

OK. I admit I did not have CU launch in 2025 on my BINGO card.

I think 12 years is sufficient development time.

Lol I guess Mark Jacobs did say he had a big announcement coming early this year.

People have been speculating for years or at least since the Ragnarök debacle inflamed a good portion of the player base for this game, decade plus of development, backers waiting years for refunds, generally bad PR, Mark apparently burning his credibility, who would be left to play and how would they stay afloat financially as at some point investors need a return.

The answer as many guessed is leasing the game engine they created, even changing the studio name to match the engine. Touting it could be used for PvEvP extraction, mass pve and other modes of gaming.

I don’t think its out of the realm of possibility they can release a Minimal Viable Product version of Camelot Unchained by the end of next year, maybe even make it free to play to get some bodies in there, have some twitch folks hype it up regardless of quality if the real plan is to get some massive battle exposure, showcase the engine and get developers building games and paying them to utilize their engine.

I personally do not even see a semantics difference since they are calling this "release" also Early Access in their press release:
“FAIRFAX, VA – FEB. 29, 2024 – Led by video game industry veteran Mark Jacobs, City State Entertainment has rebranded to Unchained Entertainment. The company is readying the official launch of Early Access for Final Stand: Ragnarok, a multiplayer, co-op PvE hack and slasher action game.
So Early Access -> Early Access unless I miss something. :)
I really am starting to think studios are trying to confuse players as to what is actually launching. It is the "official launch" (I assume then they have unofficial ones?) but it is only early access. If they start using the word "release" with early access they are definitely trying to muddy the water.

Early access is a release, I see nothing wrong with that word - personally I do not pay attention to any of these labels anyway as they change from player to player and from developer to developer, rendering them meaningless. I do find the wordplay in this particular case hilarious though.

Now if they call this "official early access", the other one was "just" "early access", they were already using the term "pre-early access" for the stage before, eh, too silly. It reminds me of those count-to-threes where you say "1, 2, 2 and a half, 2 and three quarters, 2.9, 2.99, 2.999..."

They do seem to be more explicit here:

Final Stand: Ragnarök on Steam (steampowered.com)
What is the current state of the Early Access version?
How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

if you trust them (I only trust and judge current states against current pricing).
Well what term do you think should be used for "final release"? Studios did seem to be using the word "release" to indicate something that has come out of early access or was never in early access. We need a clear demarcation, the whole advent of early access has obscured when a game is fit for launch and when it is launched to release as I think of it.

It's hard to think of another business that gets away with this. Do people watch movies that aren't done yet? Listen to music that isn't finished? Buy cars that aren't complete? Go to restaurants that serve partially cooked food?

Do you buy a laptop that doesn't have all its parts installed yet? A refrigerator, stove, or dishwasher that are missing parts? A book that is missing the last 5 chapters? How about a painting that is only partially done?

Perhaps the closest is some kind of story that is published in pieces in magazines, where you get a chapter a month. Games today typically change a lot over time because of the easy updates from the internet. So maybe this is a brand new kind of product, where you buy into the game knowing that what you are getting isn't the final product.

In that case, it becomes very important to know how reliable the developers are. After buying the first Harry Potter book, you want to buy more knowing the story is going to develop and be good.

That's why it is more important than ever that game developers have a reputation of knowing what they are doing. You can buy into the beginning, knowing that the game will keep developing and changing. Too many developers today make outlandish claims, like "we'll release in 2016" and it's 2024 with no release. But they want to charge full price as if they had actually done their job.

Indeed but let me tell you something else we can be certain of, every time a business gets one over on its customers every other business takes note. I have no doubt that executives from many industries are trying to work out if they can bring "early access" into their industry. Think about "early adopters", people who buy new tech and new iterations of say mobile phones. The equivalent of that in gaming is people who buy at final launch before the reviews. What about all the software we use which is still beta, that's early access. It has it limits of course, we won't be seeing any early access cars. :)

I see your point. Haven't really thought it through because to me it's the same. I guess, just "release" - omitting the "early access" qualifier, to communicate that their game is fit to receive final judgement (whatever that means to everyone).
I am one of those people who never plays early access, but each to their own, I always say to those that do give us your early impressions, I use that sort of information to decided on wishlisting.

It is hard to believe...the gameplay hasn't changed in years, it's still clunky as hell, with no content etc.

Having said that, it would be in keeping with tradition to release a steaming pile of trash and "fix it" later.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
